  6 Questions
Q: Does the Generac 6001 came with electric start? If not what model does?

by David Lasalle from Louisiana on January 20, 2014

A: Thanks for your inquiry.

Generac does not offer a LP portable generator with electric start and one cannot be added to the engine due to the configuration of the engine.

The only LP portable generators with electric start we offer are the Winco Tri-Fuel units.

Q: Is there a conversion kit to natural gas?
by James from New York on October 07, 2013

A: Thank you for your inquiry!

The Generac, 6001 is designed for use with propane fuel. The unit is not compatible with natural gas. There are no conversions available for this type of use.

Q: Which manual transfer switch would you recommend for Generac LP5500 - 5500 Watt Portable LP? I have a 200 amp Siemens panel in the basement.
Would I be able to run a fan of central air/heating?

by Uri from New Jersey on September 13, 2013

A: Thank you for your inquiry!

The Generac LP5500 is equipped with a L14-30 receptacle. This is a 30 amp, 240 volt connection. In order to properly connect to your home's main electrical panel and get the most out of this generator, you will need a manual transfer switch. Below is a link to the Power Transfer systems which include the Manual Transfer Switch, Inlet Box and Power Cord.

30-Amp Power Transfer Systems

While the Reliance Controls product is a popular option, I feel that the Generac 6294 is more suitable for your installation. The Generac 6294 is more versatile and allows you to interchange the breakers.

While this will be sufficient to power your forced air furnace, we do not recommend that you attempt to run your central A/C due to the amount of power needed at startup which will far exceed this generators capabilities.

As an example my 3-ton AC unit requires 48A at start-up which is close to 11,500 watts and every time the compressor motor kicks on it needs the 48A. So, if I had a 12,000 watt generator running the AC along with any other items in my home I could easily overload the generator.

This is why we do not recommend using any portable generator to power central AC.

If you want to power AC you need to step up to a permanent home standby generator.

by Jared, Product Expert

Q: Which transfer switch would you recommend for Generac 5500?
by Richie Newfield from New York on September 03, 2013

A: The Generac 5500 watt generators have a 30A 4-Prong 240V twistlock outlet which you would use to connect to a manual transfer switch using a generator power cord.

The following 30A switch kit is a recommendation found under the hand-picked accessories tab available on product page for each generator model....

Q: Is the LP5500 safe to use with modern electronics?
by Jim Chapman from Missouri on June 18, 2013

A: Standard emergency portable generators are not designed to power sensitive electronics unless otherwise stated. The Generac LP models are not designed for this and there are only a few models that state they can.

The only models would be small inverter generators (gasoline), the Winco Tri-Fuel portables (<6% THD), the Generac XP Professional Models (<6% THD) and the permanent home standby systems.

by Jared, Product Expert

Q: Do any of the portable generators come with transfer switches?
by Hal from Connecticut on March 28, 2013

A: There are some kits available.

5500 Watt Kit

7500 Watt Kit

Both kits above are gasoline operated only.

Great Generator
As advertised started on first pull. Easy to turn over unlike some generators. Added front wheels for easy movement by my wife. Even my daughter can start it! Not very loud at all for its size. Love it! It would get a higher rating if it had electric start.

Not Working Well, Even In Warmer Climate
Last reviewed this 2 years ago. Have kept the generator indoors since, stored propane indoors as well. Have since moved to warmer climate, and had to use this yesterday when our power went out. Managed to get it started, and it ran well for 4 hours. Note, there is now a total of 5 hours run time on this. Shut it down when the power came on, and went to store it back in the garage, about 60 degrees yesterday. A couple hours later, decided to start it again, just to make sure, as we are... more

Chris,
Very sorry to hear about the generator issues you're having. From what you described, It sounds like it may need a carb or intake valve adjustment. I'm sure a Generac service center will be able to diagnose the issue and provide a solution.

Chris,
We're sorry to learn of your frustrating experience. As it sounds like you've already performed the troubleshooting tasks that are mentioned in the Troubleshooting section of your unit's owner's manual, we'd recommend contacting an independent authorized service provider in your local area to ensure the cause of your unit's issues are efficiently diagnosed and serviced appropriately. Rest assured, independent authorized service providers are capable of providing any applicable warranty coverage to your unit. If they are able to determine that a simple carburetor or intake valve adjustment is all that is required, this particular remedy usually doesn't take too much time.

Please do not hesitate to contact us directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722) if you have any other comments, questions or concerns; we are available 24/7.

Update On Previous Review - Issue May Be Resolved
So, fair is fair. I contacted a service dealer, and went to take it to them to look it over. Before loading it up, my son tried to start it again. He only primed it for like 1-2 seconds, and I told him it says to do it for 5. But I let him try. Third pull on "Run" and it fired up and ran. We shut it down, and tried again. Same result. So I am guessing I had it somewhat flooded, and that for my specific unit 5 seconds may be too long to prime. So for now, we are good to go. ... more

Lp Makes It Easy
This generator was the perfect fit for our trucks onsite at construction houses. No more tripped breakers and fighting for space if a power pole is available. Convenient and don't have to worry about EPA and storage of gasoline issues. Glad we used this unit.

Great Product - Alternative To Gasoline!
Jim Braugher in Technical Support @ EGD was instrumental in our decision to purchase the Generac LP5500 due to his level of expertise and timeless assistance. The Generac LP5500 (propane model) started right up and has an easy start up with the "Power Dial". The hood can easily be removed for maintenance and it's made in the USA. It also has an hour meter on the front panel and will shut down if oil runs too low.

We purchased a GenTent 10K Stormbracer tent (made in USA) to... more

Beware Of Buying Online - Does Not Start Out Of The Box
Followed starting directions to the letter, generator will not start! Cost me $100 to have "Authorized" service shop come and pick it up for evaluation.
Electric Generators Direct was of absolutely NO HELP! Generac punted to a service dealer, who was not happy I did not buy the unit from them.
So, ANY savings from this online purchase has been lost double through fees and time wasted. Thank goodness I did not wait until there was a power outage! BEEN OVER A WEEK AT THE SHOP,... more

Generac Lp5500
This unit doesn't start quite as easily as my Briggs and Stratten 5500 watt gasoline generator which starts on the first pull but it is not difficult at all to start. Contrary to some reviews I have read, I did not notice any discernible difference in the exhaust sound between the LP motor and the gas motor. The gas generator has a 7 gallon tank that will run 7 or 8 hours as opposed to 4 or 5 hours on a 20 lb propane tank. I think I'll invest in a 30 lb propane tank for overnight use so I... more
