  12 Questions
Q: Does this generator have a pure sine wave and is it safe to use with electronics?
by L. Kaopua from Hawaii on January 19, 2014

A: Thanks for your inquiry.

Conventional generators (Like the LP3250) consist of heavy copper coils, which generate a raw form of electricity. The engine must maintain a constant speed of 3,600 rotations per minute to produce AC power. In other words, it must run at full speed, regardless of the load needed, consuming more fuel and generating more noise.

The electricity produced isn't as clean as utility power. Therefore, standard generators are NOT recommended to power sensitive electronics like computers.

Inverter generators, however, utilize a different type of alternator to generate very clean AC power. The inverter technology reduces the generator's size and weight. But more importantly, the engine can run at varying speeds, significantly reducing the noise levels and fuel consumption.

Q: Is there a benefit to a LP generator compared to a gasoline generator? I think most portable generators are gasoline.
by Donald Perlman from New York on September 09, 2013

A: The only benefit that customers feel are necessary would be fuel storage where they are more comfortable storing many small LP tanks or having one large LP tank vs. storing gallons of gasoline.

They are similar as far as fuel consumption to cost goes but the one major disadvantage with LP is when the temperature goes below 40 degrees F. When it gets colder you end up losing LP volume within the tank and if you have outages in the winter this could be an issue. This does not happen with gasoline.

by Jared, Product Expert
Q: Can the LP3250 be converted to run off natural gas instead of propane?
by Kevin Rohrbacher from New York on June 20, 2013

A: The Generac LP3250 burns propane to generate electricity. The unit is fed by a 20 - 30# propane tank.

Runs solely on propane and has no option to run on NG (Natural Gas).

by Jared, Product Expert
Q: Jim; Is there a battery start for this LP3250? Recoil is not always easy for us older folks. We can connect and read gauges but pulling the cord can be a problem. Any suggestions?
by Al Banker from Florida on January 13, 2013

A: Sorry, Generac currently does not offer an electric start model that operates on LP gas.

A recommendation would be the Winco Tri-Fuel generators which are all electric start.

Tri-Fuel Generators

These units do cost more but with the capability to operate on 3 different fuel types they are extremely flexible and are all electric start.

by Jared, Product Expert
Q: Is this unit legal in California? (Genrac LP3250)
by Jim Reynolds from California on August 31, 2012

A: I'm sorry, but no. This unit is not currently CARB certified and cannot be shipped to California.
by Jared, Product Expert
Q: How much would be the run time for a 100 watt load? Does the generator overheat after a number of hours of operation? Thanks
by Ricardo Flores from Texas on August 11, 2012

A: Generac does not test their units for small load run times so we do not have a number to provide you. They do list this unit as being able to run for 9 hours at half load output.

This unit will need to cool for a short time when changing fuel and the oil will need to be checked and topped off as needed.

Please review the owner's manual for extended run time requirements.

Owner's Manual

Q: I am interested in the generac LP 3250 for my sump pump in case the electric goes out as it did last year? Is this enough power for that?

by Donna from New York on July 17, 2012

A: This unit should be suitable to power most sump pumps on the market these days. The key will be for you to determine the power consumption of the pump. If you can locate the product information on your pump, it should list how many amps the unit needs to operate (typically 6-8). Sometimes this is located within the owners manual, others it is located on the unit itself. This generator delivers 14 amps @ 240v. So long as this threshold is not exceeded, you will stay nice and dry.
by Jared, Product Expert
Q: Can this unit connect to a 100 gal tank?
by Mike DeCosta from New Jersey on July 12, 2012

A: Generac sets these units up for use with a 20 or 30# tank, however, if you have the appropriate connection, volume and you monitor the generator while in use you should have no problems using a 100 Gallon tank.

The key will be during extended run times you will want to check the oil often and change or fill if necessary.
by Jared, Product Expert
Q: Jim,

Did not see the answer to a customers question about CARB compliance. So, is this generator available to California customers (it is listed under your CARB generators).

by David Cantu from California on July 04, 2012

A: No, the Generac LP3250 - Model 6000 is not CA CARB Compliant and cannot be shipped there. It is 49 state compliant only. Sorry.

by Jared, Product Expert
Q: Jim, does a portable LP Generator need to be grounded? I plan to purchase and use one only during power outages and then store again. No permanent mount.
by Ricard Veilleux from Connecticut on June 29, 2012

A: All portable generators are required to be grounded to an earth ground for safety. This information is found in the owner's manual available on the website under the specs link.

by Jared, Product Expert
Q: Can you switch gas generator to LP?
by Rick from South Carolina on August 27, 2011

A: The Generac LP3250 burns propane to generate electricity. The unit is fed by a 20 - 30# propane tank.

Runs solely on propane and has no option to run on gasoline.

by Jared, Product Expert
Q: Jim, thanks for your answer on the LP3250 for California emissions.

Out of curiosity, do you happen to know the sound level of the LP3250 at 1/2 and full load? It's not on the spec sheet.

Also, with the unit being backordered, do you charge my credit card when I place the order or when you ship out the unit?

by David Rosing from California on July 07, 2011

A: Unfortunately, not all generator manufacturers publish the decibel ratings for their generators. Currently, there are no industry standards or requirements for generator manufacturers to follow when testing their generators for noise. Due to this, manufacturers can test the noise level under any conditions they choose and, therefore, the results are not very reliable as each company will test under conditions that are favorable to their products. At this time there are no db(A) ratings available on this model.

We do not charge your credit card until the order ships.

We and everyone who sees it (including the delivery man) is so impressed to see a propane generator! It does take 2 people to put the finishing touches on it. And it is not as quiet as advertised. I feel synthetic oil should have been included instead of regular. Synthetic holds up better! But it will certainly take care of our needs during a power outage!
Pros: Price, Easy To Store, Durable, High Quality

Good And Fair
Product arrived in good condition. Setup was easy enough. We were missing one bolt but no big deal. Startup was great. Runs much quieter than I was expecting. Threw a meter on and tested a few loads. Works great so far except the tires are not going to work on this unit. I rolled it across our very smooth shop floor for about 30 ft without a propane tank and the tires separated from the rims. This unit is not super light. Overall quality for the price is good.
Pros: Price, Quiet, Easy To Use, Easy To Start
Cons: Tires Need An Upgrade

Just In Time!
Purchased the Generac for my home, just in case, and within a week we had HURRICANE HERMINE hit us! Used it at the house to keep the frig, TV ,and cells charged and then able to move it to my restaurant to keep the BEER COLD and the sandwich box cold...The propane tank lasted EXACTLY as advertised: 9 hours of power on one tank...Very happy we purchased it...NOW we need a larger COMMERCIAL unit to keep at my restaurant. This is our 4th Item Purchased from PED and we can say nothing but GOOD... more

Good With Some Buts
Delivery and packing were great. The lift-truck driver met me at a nearby store no place to turn around on my dead-end street & helped me load the unit on a dolly into my wheel-chair lift equipped van - so NO problem getting it off when I got home.

I've used it twice during brief outages, and it ran w/o a hitch.
It is quiet enough that our nearest neighbors didn't even know it was on while they were on their deck!

I had hoped to make a connection to the 1000Gal. LPG tank we have for... more

Great Generator
My generator arrived at 2:30 on the afternoon of the start of the New England "Snowicane" this February 2013. Power was out 8 hours later and did not return for 4 days thanks to thousands of fallen trees. In my house no power means no ability to fire the computer controlled oil furnace so no heat. The generator fired right up and ran so quietly that most of my neighbors did not know I had it running, until they saw the lights and came over to warm up and have a cup of hot coffee!.

A Very Good Small Generator
Enough power to run the refrigerator/freezer, my computer, tv, a few lights and fans. Won't run the whole house but just enought to run the essentials for a few days without power. The propane tanks are so much easier to deal with than gasoline. I was concerned that the recoil start might be difficult, being a petite 60 year old, but it starts right up easily. Runs quietly compared to gas generator. Lightweight enough to move it around no problem. The store where I bought it assembled it... more

Generac Lp3250 - 3250 Watt Portable Lp Generator Review
Very short shipping time. Received with no visible damage.

Assembly instructions were clear and accurate. Assembly was very easy, although unit is somewhat heavy to move during assembly. I recommend using either a jack or winch to help take the load off your back. My ceiling mounted winch worked great.

As many reviewers have commented, the initial start takes some effort and time (even after following directions carefully). I attempted to start for about 10 minutes with no success. ... more

Nice Generator, Very Quiet
Just bought one last week. Started the second pull. Although it wouldn't start the next day. Figured out if you turn the tank on to fast, it will close the safety valve in the tank. Resulting not starting. Just turn the valve on slowly, starts on the second pull every time.
Pros: Quiet, High Quality, Easy To Store
Cons: Sometimes Tricky To Start

Quite Good
The unit is well built and works as expected. It was not difficult to assemble, and went together without a hitch.

The generator does not start very quickly It took many more pulls than I expected from a brand new unit. I can only hope that it will start when the temperature is down this winter.

You may find that the unit starts easier once the motor has finished the break-in outlined in your Owner's Manual.

If it remains hard to start once it's broken in, please feel free to contact the folks at Generac, toll free, at (888) 436-3722 x5381 for advice, or to find the warranty service location closest to you. Be sure to have the serial number of your unit handy when you call them.
