Can I use this with my Generac GP 3250 generator?
Kurt Hanie
from New Jersey
January 12, 2013
Answer
Sorry, you cannot use model 6112 cord with your Generac GP3250 (5982) generator. Your generator has a 20A 4-Prong outlet so any power cord you want to use must be 20A 4-prong and have twist-lock cord end L14-20.

I have a Zoller M53 sump pump that I want to run off of a small generator when we have power outages. What should I look for?
Kelsey Stone
from Illinois
January 12, 2013
Answer
The Zoller M53 pump requires 25.9 starting amps to operate properly and when calculated using Ohms Law (Amps x Volts = Watts) you need to have a generator that is at least 3108 watts.....25.9A x 120V = 3108W.

With this said the Generac GP1800 is definitely not big enough to handle your pump and we recommend getting the GP3250 if this is the only item you intend on powering.

Note: Rule of thumb when properly sizing a generator is to size it to 80% of its running capacity so it has the flexibility to handle starting surge loads without overloading the generator or put a big strain on the engine and alternator.

Jim. Need an emergency generator for my home. Not looking to run the entire house but perhaps a sump, refrig, a few lights, computer, etc... Suggestions? Also, do I need an inverter type?
Robert Preston
from Rhode Island

Answer
If you are intending on powering any sensitive electronics you will need to go to an inverter style generator since standard open frame style generators are for emergency items only such as motor loads like your refrigerator.

To be comfortable (without electronics) you would want to go with a 5000 watt model or larger so you are not running it at 100% all the time.

The rule of thumb when sizing a generator is to size it to 80% of its running load output or add 20% to your calculations so you are not overworking the gen.

To calculate wattage you would use Ohms Law.....Starting Amps x Volts = Watts.

Jim, we purchased a new generator and we put gas in it to check to see how it runs. My question is how do we store this machine ~ with or without gas? Also, we were told to start the machine once a month. Is this true? Thank you for your help.

Answer
The best thing is to follow the owner's manual. If you intend on storing the generator for an extended amount of time there are procedures in the manual that you will need to follow for your specific model.

If you intend on keeping gasoline in the unit you must use a fuel stabilizer like StaBil which keeps the fuel fresh as gasoline will go bad in 30 Days.

If you are not doing long term storage you should start your generator every couple of weeks so the engine gets properly lubricated and you are moving fuel through the fuel system which prevents buildup.

I just received the generator I purchased from you (Generac GP5500 - 5500 Watt Portable Generator) and it comes with a bottle of oil. It does not say on the bottle what type it is. 30 weight or 10w30? Do you know so that it is the proper oil to use for the current temperature. Thanks, Larry

Answer
Generac uses 10W30 in their kits that get sent with the portable generators.
