I have a Zoller M53 sump pump that I want to run off of a small generator when we have power outages. What should I look for?
Kelsey Stone

Answer
The Zoller M53 pump requires 25.9 starting amps to operate properly and when calculated using Ohms Law (Amps x Volts = Watts) you need to have a generator that is at least 3108 watts.....25.9A x 120V = 3108W.

With this said the Generac GP1800 is definitely not big enough to handle your pump and we recommend getting the GP3250 if this is the only item you intend on powering.

Note: Rule of thumb when properly sizing a generator is to size it to 80% of its running capacity so it has the flexibility to handle starting surge loads without overloading the generator or put a big strain on the engine and alternator.

I would be using this to take out to some land where there's no electricity hook up and building a shed/deck, would this be enough to run one power tool at a time (Drill, saw, ect) or should I look at a higher output?

Answer
A higher output would be better for tools as they can require a tremendous amount of amperage at start-up.

The best thing to do is to get a clamp-on amp meter and then test the starting amperage loads on the tools themselves (don't read label) and then calculate that to watts using Ohms Law - Amps x Volts = Watts.

I just received the generator I purchased from you (Generac GP5500 - 5500 Watt Portable Generator) and it comes with a bottle of oil. It does not say on the bottle what type it is. 30 weight or 10w30? Do you know so that it is the proper oil to use for the current temperature. Thanks, Larry

Answer
Generac uses 10W30 in their kits that get sent with the portable generators.
