I have a customer running propane on a Yamaha genset. While burning propane the engine burns excessive oil, not a problem on gasoline. Any ideas?
Shane Bland
from Florida

Answer
The Yamaha portable generators are engineered and warranted to operate on gasoline only. The reason your customer is burning through oil is due to the excessive temperatures of the unit.

Gasoline burns at 485 degrees F whereas propane burns at 1008 degrees F which will cause excessive heat within the engine in turn burning off the engine oil.

How frequently do I have to change the motor oil? On the specs it only says to change it after the first 20h, and after this first change?

Answer
The maintenance chart on page 26 of the owner's manual shows the recommended oil change time frame (every 6 months or 100 hours).

If I buy a Yamaha EF3000i for work an play. My question is if I use the gen to charge my 12 volt 100 amp battery, how long would it take? And would using the gen be more efficient and time saving rather than getting solar panels or a wind gen to charge the batteries when using batteries for power?
Ron Jolin
from Minnesota

Answer
This power source is designed to charge batteries up to 40 Ah (Amp hours) that are half-discharged. Do not charge batteries of a higher capacity then 40 Ah.

12VDC Battery

The time required for recharging a battery varies depending on the discharge level of the battery. When the specific gravity of the battery reaches 1.26 to 1.28, charging is complete. When charging, check the battery's specific gravity once an hour.

The average time for charging a half-discharged 40 Ah battery is approximately 5 hours. Be sure to check the battery fluid level before charging.

Notice:
**Do not connect any load to the battery or use the engine starter motor while charging. This causes higher current to flow through the generator which will burn out the coil.
**Do not connect a VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead Acid) battery. To Charge a VLRA battery, a special (constant-voltage) battery charger is required.

What is a inverter generator?
Francine Breland
from New Jersey
December 28, 2012
Read Response +
Answer
An inverter generator is a power generator that can process raw power into a power feed similar to the power received through power lines. The generator part of an inverter generator is usually powered by gasoline or diesel fuel. "Inverter" means that the power is converted from direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC).

Typically inverter generators are much smaller then standard open frame style generators and tend to operate at very low noise levels. This makes them perfect for tailgating or camping and in some cases able to power one or two items in your home in an emergency.

I just bought this generator from you and the manual says you must ground the generator. Is this necessary? if so, how do you do that?
Brad Wendkos
from Florida

Read Response +
Answer
All generators must be grounded for safety. There is a grounding lug on the generator where you would take a copper wire and attach it to a grounding pole that is pounded into the ground. The pole must be a minimum of 6 - 8 feet down based on electrical code.

You can tie it to your houses grounding pole if your home has one since some older models, before coed was established, did not have a grounding pole.

When in doubt you can contact your local city inspector or a local certified electrician.

Answer
With the boost technology this may run your RV A/C but we recommend you check the starting amp load to calculate the true starting wattage. Starting Amps x Volts = Watts.
