Is this 200 amp utility 50 amp gen panel fed with 4/0 wire?
John
from Massachusetts
September 28, 2013
Answer
Thank you for your interest in Electric Generators Direct!
While we cannot advise what is required to feed the TWB2005DR, the rated lug range on this panel will support 4/0 wire. This transfer panel is designed to efficiently handle 5/0.
You will need to confirm the National Electrical Code requirements in order to determine what conductors will feed this device.

If I want to hook up a portable generator to my house on the outside panel box, with a 50 amp circuit 10k generator, single transfer switch which box will satisfy that?

Answer
It is going to depend on the incoming amperage load from your utility company.
Most applications are 200A but it can vary. Here is the most common manual switch that allows for 50A generator input....
If you buy the Reliance Controls 200-Amp Outdoor Manual Transfer Panel how do you meter your usage so you don't over power generator - 12500 @ 50 mp gen?

Answer
You would have to install a 50A watt meter within the system so you can monitor the generators output.
Hi Jim, I am looking at your Generac 15kw. The place of installment has a 200A service with a 50A/240V CB for the stove and a 20A/240V CB for the large door. I do not look forward to wiring a transfer switch inside as the layout is not good. Putting the switch next to the outside box makes more sense to me. What do you recommend? Do you sell a 200A switch without CBs? I do not know what the NEC states but it seems if all circuits already have CBs and as the generator has a CB, it would be safe. Only thing the owner will have to monitor what is on at once. Thanks for your help. Steve

Hi Mike. I bought a 17.5 kw Generac and want to use it to power the whole house. Is there a way to get more than 50 amps to a transfer switch.? What transfer switch would you choose?

Answer
The best way to connect to your home panel and have the ability to use all your circuits is to use a manual transfer panel based on the amperage size of your existing panel. (100A or 200A) This transfer panel would be mounted between your meter and your main panel breaker so you have control of all of your circuits. You still need to control them according to the load without exceeding the maximum of 12,500 watts through the 50A outlet. In a normal situation no one normally uses anywhere near 12,500 watts at any one time. The link below will show you some of the switches we have to give you more options.
I have a Honda EB5000X generator and I would like to know what transfer switch you would recommend I use. I know I can not run my whole home but I would like to be able to turn some things on and off as needed.

Answer
This transfer switch is perfect for trying to manage your panel without the limitations. The main issues would be to not overload the generator and a close eye needs to be watching the loads until you get a real feel for what you are in need of. It is recommended to include a watt meter in your design which will help monitor your usage.
This transfer switch is mounted between the meter and your existing main breaker which allows you the control of your panel.
Note: A certified electrician should be used in this type of application.
