Q: Need genset to fun 50amp service.. I have two AC units and double fridge units...need genset proper size.. thanks
by Bob Rogers from Utah on June 26, 2016

A: In order to size the unit properly we would need to know the size of the A/C units and also the starting amperage. I personally would recommend contacting the manufacturer of the RV to see what size generator they recommend based on the electrical demand.

Q: What is the noise level?
by Kathryn Froelich from North Dakota on February 05, 2013

A: Per the manufacturers spec sheet available in the spec section on the product page....

Sound 67 dB(A) - Readings at 10 ft (3 m) half load.

- Meets National Park Service sound level requirements (60 dB(A)
@ 50 ft) for national park use.
- Typical installation will further reduce sound level.

Q: Cummins Onan RV 5500 5.5 generator, could this be installed in to a 5th wheel RV?

I would like to know the dimensions so I could see if it would be able to go where I want it to be installed.

by Thomas Barnaby from Massachusetts on July 18, 2012

A: These units can definitely be installed in a 5th wheel RV and you can find the dimensions listed in the installation drawing/spec sheet under the spec link on the product page.

The Cummins Onan 5.5kw is one of the better air-cooled gasoline RV generator on the market and packs a lot of power in a compact package while still offering superior noise reduction and fuel efficiency.

Typical applications include Class A and C motorhomes with single or dual air conditioning, fifth wheels, travel trailers, sport utility trailers, horse trailers and industrial vehicles.

This model has all the power you need and comes in a compact design. This is why this model make it... more

Great Product The Onan 5.5 Generator Is The Best On The Market.
I use a Onan 5.5 on my service truck we are ordering our third generator, the first one lasted 7,500 hours the second lasted 12,000 hours with few problems. The biggest problem were the vacuum choke pull offs.
Pros: I'd Buy It Again, Quiet, Durable, The price is comming down.
Cons: Expensive, Bad Instructions, The parts cost too much.

A Lemmon From The Start
I have had nothing but trouble with the unit. There have been two partial engine rebuilds (one cylinder only) due to scored, at factory cylinder walls. Eventually the engine was replaced. There have been two carburetors and now am being told that the dynamo has a problem.

The unit is run often and has almost one thousand hours on it, which everyone states is "Nothing".

The unit has been so unreliable that I am considering replacement. I have to go Onan once again, but this time I... more

Takes Forever To Start & Won't Stay Running
I have one in my new toy hauler and its been nothing but trouble. I have to start it at least 15 or 20 times before it will stay running and then when i turn on more than the TV the whole generator dies. It only has 45 hours on it and they have been the worst hours of camping ever, I've taken it to a Cummins service facility twice and both times they say its good and fixed , then i have the same problems again. I heard it was one of the best but I'm not seeing it!!!!

I'm An Rv Tech
This is a very well built generator. The biggest problem I see is the carb varnishing but it is not the generator's fault! You need to run these things not let them sit for six months or longer! Also as with any small engine use fresh fuel, once a year or 150 hours maybe change the oil, Methanol can lead to more carbon build up and since the throttle doesn't change RPM much this will cause more build up, you can't rev it like your old Chevy or Ford to blow out the carbon. A can of 4C from Onan... more
Pros: Durable, Easy To Use, Quiet, I'd Buy It Again

Very Poor Prodcut
I have a Coachman with an Onan generator. Only got two hundred hours on it. I had to repair a broken rocker arm and now it has a serious oil leak. I've never had such an unreliable machine. Cummins should be embarrassed by the product they produce. Maybe that is why they won't list their prices on the internet.

Cummins Has Problems
I had mine repaired four times for the same problem at Cummins service centers. The service personnel have always been nice and helpful, but the design of the generator drive unit fails regularly. If you have a problem be ready to pay 14-17 hundred.
Pros: Features
Cons: Unreliable, Durability, Expensive

Will start and run normal until the weather gets hot, then will run only second. First repair done by coach service center. New fuel pump, said it was fixed. Another trip, hot weather, instant replay, didn't like hot weather, neither did we, was 104, no air conditioning again. Cummins service center, here we come.

They seemed to have fixed it, another new fuel pump, plus housing door was broke n at dealers shop, screwing up cooling on generator. Cummins wanted to know who had worked on... more

Watch Your Fuel Quality And Keep Your Injectors Clean
I have this generator on my 2013 Thor Challenger 37FT. First, ensure you only use quality, name brand gas. Costco gas is also an option as they have strong quality control. Secondly, use a quality fuel injectors cleaner in your fuel tank on a routine basis. These two marginally higher cost practices, will pay off in the long run. The same fuel injector additive for your gas engine will also help keep your generator carb and engine running smoother. I have been doing this for several decades and... more

No Problems
I read that many are having problems with the Onan 5500 watt gen. We have owned ours for 5 years without a hitch. My dealer gave me a tip years ago how to maintain an Onan and get years of life from it. First of all, our fuels or gasoline's being processed in the USA are the poorest quality in years. It's trash and the generators get the bad rap. I pour in a can of Sea Foam per 20 gallons and put a heavy load on it for 30 minutes. Everything ,roof air, electric hot water heat, etc. This opens... more
