Emergency Generator Guide

What's a Watt?
How Much Juice Do You Need to Produce

How to Pick the Perfect Emergency Generator A watt basically measures how much energy an appliance needs to operate.

A 60-watt lightbulb consumes 60 watts.

So how many watts do you need to weather a power outage?

The answer is actually pretty easy as long as you don't get too bogged down into "wattage overload."

Electric Generators Direct.com stopped using fancy charts and online wattage calculators several years ago because they are rarely accurate.

Since every home and every appliance is unique, it's highly unlikely that some online estimate can quickly guess your exact personal needs.

Here's the good news. You don't have to tally up every watt if you think big!

Are You Sure You Want to Know?

If you have unlimited time and a hot passion for electricity, you're welcome to calculate your exact wattage by measuring every appliance in your home.

There are two simple ways to determine the wattage of your appliances:

1. Data Plate
The easiest way is to just look at the data plate on the back of your appliance. It will tell you how many watts, amps and volts are required to power the appliance. Reliance AmWatt Load Tester

2. Wattage Meter
You can also use a wattage meter to measure the EXACT amount of power. Simply plug the appliance into the wattage meter. Then plug the wattage meter into the wall to get an accurate measurement.

The Big Picture
Electric Generators Direct has categorized their emergency portable generators into three sizes: Medium, Large and X-Large.

You simply select one of the three sizes depending on your overall goal.

Briggs & Stratton 5550 Watt Generator Medium portable generators (3,000-6,000 watts) will power multiple survival appliances, including your refrigerator, sump pump, furnace fan and several other appliances.

Coleman Powermate 7000 Watt Generator Large portable generators (7,000-9,000 watts) will restore power to multiple rooms in your home (minus a central air conditioner).

Guardian UltraSource 15,000 Watt Generator X-Large portable generators (10,000+ watts) will supply enough electricity to restore power to small homes, including some central air conditioners.
