Sound levels are measured in decibels (dB). The lower the decibel rating, the less noise the product makes. As an example, a ticking watch is 20 dB while on the other end of the scale, a lawn mower is around 90 dB.

How do you properly size a generator for a 1500 sq. ft. to 2000 sq. ft. home?
Kenneth F.
from Arkansas
December 13, 2016
Answer
Properly sizing the generator is crucial to the success of any generator installation and requires a good working knowledge of electricity and its characteristics, as well as the varying requirements of the electrical equipment comprising the load. A certified electrician needs to be consulted for proper sizing and installation of any generator. When analyzing the electrical load, consult the manufacturer’s nameplate on each major appliance or piece of equipment to determine its starting requirements in terms of amps and voltage which can be calculated to watts using Ohms Law (Amps x Volts = Watts). When choosing the generator output select a rating that is approximately 20 to 25% higher than the peak load (for example, if the load is about 8 kilowatts, select a 10 kW generator). A higher rated generator will operate comfortably at approximately 80% of its full capacity and will provide a margin of flexibility if the load increases in the future. Note: Applications that are commercial, all-electric homes, have heat pump systems or geothermal systems require special installation procedures and a certified electrician must be contacted to evaluate and install these types of systems. I'm interested in the Generac 14 kw standby generator and I want to power it with natural gas. All your other Generac standby generators show a wattage loss of about 2kW when powered with natural gas, but this one does not show a loss in the specs I have reviewed. Is this a misprint in the specs or is this a true output? If I power it with natural gas will it deliver 12 kW or 14 kW?
Albert Leblanc

Answer
This is not a misprint in the specification. The unit will produce 14kW when operating on Natural Gas and LP as tested at the factory.

Also noted on the manufacturers specification sheets is the following....

"Maximum wattage and current are subject to and limited by such factors as fuel BTU/megajoule content, ambient temperature, altitude, engine power and condition, etc. Maximum power decreases about 3.5 percent for each 1,000 feet (304.8 meters) above sea level; and also will decrease about 1 percent for each 6° C (10° F) above 16° C (60°F)."

Specification sheets can be found on the individual product pages under the Specs tab and within the download document section.

Jim I have a 100 amp Pre-Nexus service rated transfer switch. Can I use this with a nexus generator? I've heard there is some special wiring for the battery charger to work
J. Depp

Answer
Thank you for your interest in Electric Generators Direct!

There is a special kit that needs to be added to the switch to accept the 120V connection which provides the power to the internal generator controller for the charger. These kits are available from your local Generac dealer - Part Number: 0H92540SRV.

Hi, I am considering a purchase of 8Kw Generac. What does it mean by off-the-grid environment? How will I know if my house is also off-the-grid ? Thanks. Pramod
Pramod G.

Answer
Thank you for your inquiry! The term off-grid refers to not being connected to a grid, mainly used in terms of not being connected to the main or national transmission grid in electricity. In electricity off-grid can be stand-alone systems (SHS) or mini-grids typically to provide a smaller community with electricity. If your home does not receive power from a utility company, then you are considered to be off-grid. See our video below:

Can the Nexus 200 amp Smart Switch be installed with a smaller (8KW) generator? We may be limited to the smaller generator due to propane supply issues, but love the load shedding concept.
Jim White

Answer
Typically a smaller 8000 watt generator does not have the output capacity to handle a whole house application even when using the load control manager. The constant turning on and off equipment that the generator will never be able to run can be extremely harmful to the generator and to your equipment such as your AC or other larger loads.

We recommend consulting with a certified electrician to properly size the generator based on your actual needs and equipment in your home.

Yes, you can use the whole house switch but it is not recommended with a 8000 watt generator which is why manufacturers do not prepackage them together.

The 10kW unit is the largest prepackaged model that includes the whole house transfer switch but is also available with a select circuit.
