As an electrical contractor we have use arc fault circuit breakers on certain loads. This creates a problem with the neutrals. Is there an alternate panel I could use?

Q: Jim I purchased a Generac xp8000e from you guys a few months ago.. I need a transfer switch for it now. Will this 6408 work with my generator or do I need a floating neutral kit and another type transfer switch. Thanks
by Ted Verstraete from New Jersey on September 06, 2013

A: Thanks for your inquiry!

While this Generac, 6408 kit will work if the switched neutral kit is installed, I would suggest a much easier avenue. Reliance Controls currently manufacturers switches that are engineered with an existing Switched Neutral mechanism. These switches eliminate much of the hassle associated with modifying panels such as Generacs.

Although these panels are not packaged with the inlet box or power cords, they are far more superior and convenient than the above referenced product.

You can find these products on our site referenced as the "X" series from Reliance Controls. They commonly have "GFI" within the title of the product. A good option for you would be the; XRC0603C

Q: Josh, I am interested in the Gentran or Generac 6408 for use with a 5Kw generator. However I do not have anymore space for additional breakers on my 200amp service panel to accommodate the transfer switch which I understand installs like a sub-panel. I already have a separate sub-panel for my pool equipment. What do you suggest I do? Thanks
by Ray D'Alessio from Texas on August 28, 2013

A: Thank you for your inquiry!

As you know, when installing the Generac 6408 30-amp manual transfer switch, you will need to place a 2-pole circuit breaker into your existing circuit panel. Keep in mind that when this type of switch is installed, you will technically be moving the 6-10 circuits, which will receive generator power, from the main circuit panel over to the transfer switch. As such, this will free up a bit of space in your 200 amp main panel, and allow for the installation of that 2-pole circuit breaker.

Very Easy To Install
I purchased a Generac XP8000E portable generator after Sandy. I picked this generator because of the True Power Technology, I didn't know that I needed a floating Netural kit at the time. After doing a lot of research I found that the Generac 6408 Transfer switch would work with the Generator but I needed to install a floating Neutral kit.

The only problem I had was the conduit from the transfer switch was made for the wiring that came with the transfer switch adding the wiring for the... more
