I have a 6500 watt generator. I am putting in a transfer switch, which will be rated for 12500 watts, I am going to make the jump up to a 10,000 watt generator, but in the meantime, can I use a 50 amp cable on the generator I have now - its rated for L12-30.

Answer
Mike, your cord should match the most powerful outlet on the generator. The bigger the outlet, the bigger the cord.
