Q: I have a customer running propane on a Yamaha genset. While burning propane the engine burns excessive oil, not a problem on gasoline. Any ideas?
by Shane Bland from Florida on June 24, 2014

A: The Yamaha portable generators are engineered and warranted to operate on gasoline only. The reason your customer is burning through oil is due to the excessive temperatures of the unit.

Gasoline burns at 485 degrees F whereas propane burns at 1008 degrees F which will cause excessive heat within the engine in turn burning off the engine oil.

Q: Can two of these be connected together? I need 3500 watts minimum to start my A/C unit.

by Jeff from California on October 16, 2013

A: Thanks for your inquiry.

The Yamaha High Current model is not compatible with parallel cables. We do offer the EF2000iS Parallel kit which will give you 4000 watts surge and 3200 watts running when using the 30-amp outlet. Below is a link to this kit.

Q: I just recieved my Yamaha EF2400iSHC. Do you recommend running synthitic oil? If so what weight? I like running synthic in all my other toys and vehicals Thanks! Ken Kerr
by Ken from Kansas on May 08, 2013

A: You will find the oil recommendations on page 24 of the owner's manual....

Recommended Engine Oil:
A. YAMALUBE 4 (10W-40),
SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40
B. SAE #30
C. SAE #20
D. SAE 10W
Recommended engine oil grade:
API Service SE type or higher
Engine Oil Quantity:
0.6L (0.63 US qt, 0.53 lmp qt)

Yamaha does not recommend any synthetic oil in their recommendations.

Q: What is a inverter generator?
by Francine Breland from New Jersey on December 28, 2012

A: An inverter generator is a power generator that can process raw power into a power feed similar to the power received through power lines. The generator part of an inverter generator is usually powered by gasoline or diesel fuel. "Inverter" means that the power is converted from direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC).

Typically inverter generators are much smaller then standard open frame style generators and tend to operate at very low noise levels. This makes them perfect for tailgating or camping and in some cases able to power one or two items in your home in an emergency.

Q: Can we use the EF2400iSHC with an RV that only has a 30 amp or a 50 amp plug in?

by Mary Irish from Wisconsin on June 24, 2012

A: This model is too small for 50A output and in come cases it can be too small for 30A output.

This model is capable of producing 17A with a little surge capacity beyond that. It does have the capability of starting "Most" 13.5 BTU RV AC units when using a 20A power cord connected to a 30A RV connection with an adapter.

The EU3000ISEB is a better choice for output capacity and comfort due to its boost capacity and overall running capability.

Q: Is there a way to shut off the gas supply so I can run the carborator dry?
by Bill Garrett from Florida on June 24, 2012

A: Yes, all the Yamaha generators have a fuel valve shutoff allowing you to run the carb dry.

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: How does the EF2400ISHC run a 13,500 BTU air conditioners without a 30amp plungin?
by Larry Mitchell from Texas on June 15, 2012

A: You need to us a 20A cord that matches the 120V - 20A outlet to pull the maximum out of the generator.

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Are there any good quality inverter generators with electronic ignition in the 3kw range or less?
by Rob from North Carolina on April 30, 2011

A: The Honda EU3000isA and the 2 Yamaha 2800 watt generators are electric start. Click the links below for additional info:

Small Inverter Generators

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Will an inverter type generator be the right choice for running a sump pump that cuts in frequently? The pump is a 1/3 hp 9amp 115 volt. I currently have a 2500 watt porter cable (traditional) generator with Honda motor. I am looking at a Honda or Yamaha as a backup/replacement. I am unsure if I the EF2400 would be powerful enough for the regular and frequent start-ups.
by Geoff Winsor on January 20, 2011

A: The best thing to do is to calculate the starting amperage of the pump to find out what you need exactly. The formula to calculate wattage is - Starting Amps x Volts = Watts. Then you can determine the size that would suit your needs without purchasing something that may or may not work.

The 2000 watt high-current inverter generator from Yamaha is specifically designed to start stubborn, high surge electric motors such as those found on rooftop air conditioners. Until now, a person typically had to resort to a more expensive 3,000 watt inverter generator to muscle through this start-up load. Yamaha claims the new EF2400iSHC will successfully start and run most 13,500 BTU air units.

In addition to its brute starting strength, the EF2400iSHC features an economy mode for... more

Great Generator!
We purchased this model because of it's intended ability to start 13,500 BTU RV A/C. We have a Coleman Mach III unit and the generator started it!! Everything else about it is just icing on the cake. Relatively light weight, quiet and easy to use. If you're in the market for one of these generators and have an RV that has the same size A/C unit, consider this unit!!
Pros: Quiet, Easy To Use, High Quality, Price

Does Not Work As Described
I believed the website and all the info. Do not make the same mistake. This unit was selected based on it being shown as the best. It was advertised as being able to run "most" rv AC units. I got the unit and it will not run my AC unit. It just overloads and shuts off. I called the company and was told I was on my own.

They accepted no responsibility for it not working. Further research has found yammahagenerators.com says this unit is Not to run most AC units. I think this unit... more

Jeff,
Based on what you are describing, the unit is working normally; but because of the A/C unit you have and the power it requires, the generator cannot start it.

We show on our site (and Yamaha shows this also) that it will start most A/C units, but by no means do we say that it will start all of them.

If you are unhappy with the product, I recommend calling Yamaha directly at (800) 962-7926. They may be able to provide more insight.

Just What I Wanted!
I have an Airstream trailer with A/C. I wanted to be able to run the A/C when needed as we travel about the country. We used the Yamaha this week for the first time. I attached a watt/amperage cable inline at the generator. The battery charger on-board was pulling 1,100 watts when I turned on the A/C. Wow, it just started and ran. I am so excited!

It runs the charger at 900 to 1,150 watts at near low speed and quiet. It is exactly what I hoped for when I bought it. It started on the... more

Great Purchase!!
The generator arrived on time as promised. Packaged with great detail and no damage at all. Put oil and fuel in it and started on the first pull. Used it last weekend at an elevation of 5,400 feet and it worked perfectly powering my 24' trailer (lights, microwave, etc.). No better price anywhere for this quality product.
Pros: Quiet, Easy To Use, Price, Durable
Cons: Heavy

Good For Backup Power
We had a power outage got generator from the garage, added fuel and connected to transfer switch. It started on 3rd pull.

Switched load onto generator at the transfer switch and was able to run all at once: kitchen fridge, 12cu ft freezer, Trane XV95 gas furnace, gas hot water heater with power draft fan, bathroom vent fan and 7 led house lights.

Up and running in less then 10 minutes. I am impressed!

Faulty Fuel Then Flawless Functioning
I live on a lake in a rural area of eastern Texas that is plagued by all too frequent electric power outages. Most of those power outages are of the relatively short variety, 1-4 hours. I have a 6500 Kw Honda powered generator that I crank up for the occasional storm-related outages, but it is loud, fairly hard to start, a gas guzzler, and a bit of overkill for the shorter term outages. So I bought the Yamaha EF2400iS HC generator for the shorter outages. I keep the Yamaha on our screened in... more

Great For Cabin In Northern Canada
Bought unit to run tools, lights, etc at cabin in northern Manitoba. First start took two pulls and ran great. Used it for 4.5 hours first day. Next morning tried it at -7 c and started first pull. Added hour meter which helps track time between servicing. Has manual choke which will be helpful in colder temps. Is really quiet and runs smooth. Very happy with purchase and was delivered in less than a week.

So Far So Good
Went camping with new generator for the first time and thankfully I had my generator as my battery failed and without a generator we would have had to cut our camping trip short.

Starts easy and other campers commented on how quiet it is.

A Sense Of Security
Over many years we have lost electric power for short periods of 1-2 hours many times each year. These were mostly an inconvenience. During winters, however, the outages could last as long as four days or more. We have transferred our freezer contents to coolers which we placed outside if the temperature was below freezing and one time we lost the entire contents.
Large multi kilowatt generators are far too heavy for me to move in and out of the cellar, so I purchased this model

Add oil and gas, first pull!!! A little heavy, but it seems to be the best bang for your buck. If I didn't need the extra watts, I would have gotten the Honda just for the weight factor, but the quality seems equal to Honda!!

Great Service
Received my new EF2400iSHC on time and in perfect condition. Added oil and fuel and it started on the first pull. Tested with a 1500 watt heater for a few minutes and then tried a small air compressor.

It would not start the compressor but that's no fault of the inverter, as the starting amps of the compressor are way over the rated out put of the little Yamaha. I like the fuel shut off valve but not so much the access for the oil fill. All in all I like it.
