Q: I have a customer running propane on a Yamaha genset. While burning propane the engine burns excessive oil, not a problem on gasoline. Any ideas?
by Shane Bland from Florida on June 24, 2014

A: The Yamaha portable generators are engineered and warranted to operate on gasoline only. The reason your customer is burning through oil is due to the excessive temperatures of the unit.

Gasoline burns at 485 degrees F whereas propane burns at 1008 degrees F which will cause excessive heat within the engine in turn burning off the engine oil.

Q: Can two of these be connected together? I need 3500 watts minimum to start my A/C unit.

by Jeff from California on October 16, 2013

A: Thanks for your inquiry.

The Yamaha High Current model is not compatible with parallel cables. We do offer the EF2000iS Parallel kit which will give you 4000 watts surge and 3200 watts running when using the 30-amp outlet. Below is a link to this kit.

Q: I just recieved my Yamaha EF2400iSHC. Do you recommend running synthitic oil? If so what weight? I like running synthic in all my other toys and vehicals Thanks! Ken Kerr
by Ken from Kansas on May 08, 2013

A: You will find the oil recommendations on page 24 of the owner's manual....

Recommended Engine Oil:
A. YAMALUBE 4 (10W-40),
SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40
B. SAE #30
C. SAE #20
D. SAE 10W
Recommended engine oil grade:
API Service SE type or higher
Engine Oil Quantity:
0.6L (0.63 US qt, 0.53 lmp qt)

Yamaha does not recommend any synthetic oil in their recommendations.

Q: What is a inverter generator?
by Francine Breland from New Jersey on December 28, 2012

A: An inverter generator is a power generator that can process raw power into a power feed similar to the power received through power lines. The generator part of an inverter generator is usually powered by gasoline or diesel fuel. "Inverter" means that the power is converted from direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC).

Typically inverter generators are much smaller then standard open frame style generators and tend to operate at very low noise levels. This makes them perfect for tailgating or camping and in some cases able to power one or two items in your home in an emergency.

Q: Can we use the EF2400iSHC with an RV that only has a 30 amp or a 50 amp plug in?

by Mary Irish from Wisconsin on June 24, 2012

A: This model is too small for 50A output and in come cases it can be too small for 30A output.

This model is capable of producing 17A with a little surge capacity beyond that. It does have the capability of starting "Most" 13.5 BTU RV AC units when using a 20A power cord connected to a 30A RV connection with an adapter.

The EU3000ISEB is a better choice for output capacity and comfort due to its boost capacity and overall running capability.

Q: Is there a way to shut off the gas supply so I can run the carborator dry?
by Bill Garrett from Florida on June 24, 2012

A: Yes, all the Yamaha generators have a fuel valve shutoff allowing you to run the carb dry.

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: How does the EF2400ISHC run a 13,500 BTU air conditioners without a 30amp plungin?
by Larry Mitchell from Texas on June 15, 2012

A: You need to us a 20A cord that matches the 120V - 20A outlet to pull the maximum out of the generator.

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Are there any good quality inverter generators with electronic ignition in the 3kw range or less?
by Rob from North Carolina on April 30, 2011

A: The Honda EU3000isA and the 2 Yamaha 2800 watt generators are electric start. Click the links below for additional info:

Small Inverter Generators

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Will an inverter type generator be the right choice for running a sump pump that cuts in frequently? The pump is a 1/3 hp 9amp 115 volt. I currently have a 2500 watt porter cable (traditional) generator with Honda motor. I am looking at a Honda or Yamaha as a backup/replacement. I am unsure if I the EF2400 would be powerful enough for the regular and frequent start-ups.
by Geoff Winsor on January 20, 2011

A: The best thing to do is to calculate the starting amperage of the pump to find out what you need exactly. The formula to calculate wattage is - Starting Amps x Volts = Watts. Then you can determine the size that would suit your needs without purchasing something that may or may not work.

Electric Generators Direct Recommended

The 2000 watt high-current inverter generator from Yamaha is specifically designed to start stubborn, high surge electric motors such as those found on rooftop air conditioners. Until now, a person typically had to resort to a more expensive 3,000 watt inverter generator to muscle through this start-up load. Yamaha claims the new EF2400iSHC will successfully start and run most 13,500 BTU air units.

In addition to its' brute starting strength, the EF2400iSHC features an economy mode for... more

Does The Job Quietly & Efficiently
Ilive in West Islip Long Island New York. We lost power for about 14 days. I had a generator off brand but it was noisey and drank fuel.. worked fine but we could not get gas here on the island so what good is a generator.. You really don't have to run everything. I was mainly concerned about winter storms and loose power and of course your home heating. I have a forced hot air system draws very little power. so I had my electrician run power from my garage which is detached. I ran power to... more

Runs Great But Stopped Producing Dc Power
Great generator for the first 10 hours or so. Even powered my air conditioner at 12000 feet. Still runs great but only produces DC current. Service department said it was the second Yamaha generator where the motherboard went out. Motherboard cost = $900. I do think I would buy this generator again.
Pros: Easy To Use, Quiet, Easy To Store
Cons: Unreliable

Glenn,
Yamaha stands behind their products with a 3-year warranty on this model generator. This one of best selling inverter generators and it is extremely rare that it would fail within 10-hours.

Great Generator!
We purchased this model because of it's intended ability to start 13,500 BTU RV A/C. We have a Coleman Mach III unit and the generator started it!! Everything else about it is just icing on the cake. Relatively light weight, quiet and easy to use. If you're in the market for one of these generators and have an RV that has the same size A/C unit, consider this unit!!
Pros: Quiet, Easy To Use, High Quality, Price

Faulty Fuel Then Flawless Functioning
I live on a lake in a rural area of eastern Texas that is plagued by all too frequent electric power outages. Most of those power outages are of the relatively short variety, 1-4 hours. I have a 6500 Kw Honda powered generator that I crank up for the occasional storm-related outages, but it is loud, fairly hard to start, a gas guzzler, and a bit of overkill for the shorter term outages. So I bought the Yamaha EF2400iS HC generator for the shorter outages. I keep the Yamaha on our screened in... more

Just Started Using-
I have a 10K BTU Portable A/C and it starts it up rather easily. The first time I tried the A/C, basically after the generator had been used for all of three minutes, it overloaded the 2400. I restarted the generator thinking it was just a "Brand New" problem and it was! Works great over this past week and I feel confident in this unit. When the Amp/Watt need arises, this generator reacts quickly and the engine responds almost instantly. Highly recommend!

Expensive, But Well Worth The $$$. Wasted My $ On A Generac.
Tried to save a few bucks buying a Generac inverter first. Nothing but problems. Been in the shop twice and still unreliable. This unit is twice the price, but well worth it. Reliable, quiet, nice gas shutoff feature. Worth the extra bucks in dependability alone.

Cons: Expensive

First Pull..vroom!
After FEDEX delivered to the wrong address and wanting to leave it there for 3 days..I had to go get it myself...Im currently breaking in my new 2400iSHC and have been testing its capabilities. Freezer, 37 inch TV, two lamps, fan and refrigerator at the same time...check. 1600 watt space heater....check. I plugged the fridge and freezer in separately to avoid startup amps at the same time. The high capacity feature seems to allow the engine time to speed up before the increased power draw hits... more

This is the one we had dreamed about for camping. Instead of complaints, we get compliments from fellow campers and inquiries as to where did you buy it, how much did you pay. I wish it would be just a little bit more powerful to start my A/C.

Just What I Wanted
Put in gas and oil and it was so easy to start I was impressed. Light enough that at 76 I can pick it up and put it in the car or a little dolly I use. Will take on a Canada fishing trip in a month to run a 1500 watt griddle and charge batteries.
