Q: Does the Generac 6001 came with electric start? If not what model does?

by David Lasalle from Louisiana on January 20, 2014

A: Thanks for your inquiry.

Generac does not offer a LP portable generator with electric start and one cannot be added to the engine due to the configuration of the engine.

The only LP portable generators with electric start we offer are the Winco Tri-Fuel units.

Q: Is there a conversion kit to natural gas?
by James from New York on October 07, 2013

A: Thank you for your inquiry!

The Generac, 6001 is designed for use with propane fuel. The unit is not compatible with natural gas. There are no conversions available for this type of use.

Q: Which manual transfer switch would you recommend for Generac LP5500 - 5500 Watt Portable LP? I have a 200 amp Siemens panel in the basement.
Would I be able to run a fan of central air/heating?

by Uri from New Jersey on September 13, 2013

A: Thank you for your inquiry!

The Generac LP5500 is equipped with a L14-30 receptacle. This is a 30 amp, 240 volt connection. In order to properly connect to your home's main electrical panel and get the most out of this generator, you will need a manual transfer switch. Below is a link to the Power Transfer systems which include the Manual Transfer Switch, Inlet Box and Power Cord.

30-Amp Power Transfer Systems

While the Reliance Controls product is a popular option, I feel that the Generac 6294 is more suitable for your installation. The Generac 6294 is more versatile and allows you to interchange the breakers.

While this will be sufficient to power your forced air furnace, we do not recommend that you attempt to run your central A/C due to the amount of power needed at startup which will far exceed this generators capabilities.

As an example my 3-ton AC unit requires 48A at start-up which is close to 11,500 watts and every time the compressor motor kicks on it needs the 48A. So, if I had a 12,000 watt generator running the AC along with any other items in my home I could easily overload the generator.

This is why we do not recommend using any portable generator to power central AC.

If you want to power AC you need to step up to a permanent home standby generator.

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Which transfer switch would you recommend for Generac 5500?
by Richie Newfield from New York on September 03, 2013

A: The Generac 5500 watt generators have a 30A 4-Prong 240V twistlock outlet which you would use to connect to a manual transfer switch using a generator power cord.

The following 30A switch kit is a recommendation found under the hand-picked accessories tab available on product page for each generator model....

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Is the LP5500 safe to use with modern electronics?
by Jim Chapman from Missouri on June 18, 2013

A: Standard emergency portable generators are not designed to power sensitive electronics unless otherwise stated. The Generac LP models are not designed for this and there are only a few models that state they can.

The only models would be small inverter generators (gasoline), the Winco Tri-Fuel portables (<6% THD), the Generac XP Professional Models (<6% THD) and the permanent home standby systems.

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Do any of the portable generators come with transfer switches?
by Hal from Connecticut on March 28, 2013

A: There are some kits available.

Both kits above are gasoline operated only.

Great Product - Alternative To Gasoline!
Jim Braugher in Technical Support @ EGD was instrumental in our decision to purchase the Generac LP5500 due to his level of expertise and timeless assistance. The Generac LP5500 (propane model) started right up and has an easy start up with the "Power Dial". The hood can easily be removed for maintenance and it's made in the USA. It also has an hour meter on the front panel and will shut down if oil runs too low.

Great Generator
As advertised started on first pull. Easy to turn over unlike some generators. Added front wheels for easy movement by my wife. Even my daughter can start it! Not very loud at all for its size. Love it! It would get a higher rating if it had electric start.

Love My Lp5500 Generator
I love this LP generator, however, I wished you had more models.

I was looking for a higher wattage generator than a 5.5kw generator, but I can make do with this one for a while. I would love to install a whole house gen set, but money is the problem right now.

Won't Start Below Freezing
I keep in a attached garage, but the temp has been in low teens later and it is almost impossible to even pull the cord to start it . I think this is because the oil is so thick. I use 10w-30.

Backup Power
So far so good...the generator came very quickly and was mostly put together. We just had to add oil (included) and add the wheels and front supports.

It started right up. It sounds like a snowblower so it's not super quiet...about what I would have expected though.

It supports 30lb tanks of propane which they claim will get you about 8 hrs on a tank at 50% load. We haven't had to run it for real yet so I have no idea what a normal 20lb tank will get us in terms of run time. But... more

Don't Waste Your Money
I was glad I got this generator. Now I pray I will never have to rely on it. Must be used outdoors, got it. Won't work if it is cold outside. WOW! Gotta bring it in to see if it will start, as we have power outages possible tonight, temps near zero. Gotta move it back outside IF it actually starts. Shouldn't store propane inside the house, and generator won't run with cold propane. WONDERFUL! Get a gas-powered one, this is just a waste.

Chris,
Although propane (LP) is a convenient fuel to use because of the availability of 20# and 30# tanks from the hardware store and most people have them for their gas grills it is temperature sensitive.

Most people will not have issues using this fuel; but if you are in a colder climate, it will be harder and the LP must be stored in a warmer environment when not in use.

Manufacturer Response
Brand Rep
Chris,
We are sorry that you are dissatisfied with our storage recommendations for an LP5500 portable generator. Please note that we do not recommend ever starting a generator indoors; for carbon monoxide-related concerns, they should only be run outdoors. Furthermore, we recommend storing the generator and associated LP tank in a warmer environment (if applicable). This is due to the fact that when a smaller propane tank, such as the 20 lb. or 30 lb. cylinder the LP5500 portable generator can hold, is subjected to low temperatures, the propane inside of the tank begins to condense. When the propane condenses, pressure drops, and the flow provided to the generator is thereby limited. With a general lack of fuel, the generator is unable to start and/or run. Considering this, we would recommend keeping the tank as warm as possible, prior to attempting start-up. If you have any additional product-related inquiries, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722).

My First Lpg Generator
I used to have a gasoline generator that took a lot of maintenance. Always worried about stale gasoline and dried up gaskets in case I forgot to start it on a regular basis. Always hard to start. Refreshing the gasoline was always a pain.

Well, not anymore. My new generator is the best thing I bought in ages. Easy to operate and low maintenance. Two pulls out of the box started right up. I love it.

Generac Lp5500
I purchased this with some hesitation but have been greatly pleased. Using LP has its ups and downs but hopefully LP will be available when gas isn't during an emergency if power is down and gas can't be pumped the LP tanks will be available.

I use this frequently and it starts every time. If I follow the start up procedures there is no effort to getting it going. I use it to run my power tools when I am away from the house and during an event that we have it is used to operated air... more

Initial Experience
Shipper was supposed to have a lift gate but did not. Driver helped load it into my car as a 53 foot trailer would be impossible to get to my house. Heavy! Uncrated it and the way it was packaged in the container was excellent. Assembly was quick and easy. Generator looks quality and started up after a few extra pulls and ran fine. Now I hope I never have to use it in an emergency.

We do apologize for the lift gate not being available and would be happy to refund you the $50.00 you had to pay. If you have any questions, please let us know. The credit will be put back on your card.
