Q: Does the Generac 6001 came with electric start? If not what model does?

by David Lasalle from Louisiana on January 20, 2014

A: Thanks for your inquiry.

Generac does not offer a LP portable generator with electric start and one cannot be added to the engine due to the configuration of the engine.

The only LP portable generators with electric start we offer are the Winco Tri-Fuel units.

Q: Is there a conversion kit to natural gas?
by James from New York on October 07, 2013

A: Thank you for your inquiry!

The Generac, 6001 is designed for use with propane fuel. The unit is not compatible with natural gas. There are no conversions available for this type of use.

Q: Which manual transfer switch would you recommend for Generac LP5500 - 5500 Watt Portable LP? I have a 200 amp Siemens panel in the basement.
Would I be able to run a fan of central air/heating?

by Uri from New Jersey on September 13, 2013

A: Thank you for your inquiry!

The Generac LP5500 is equipped with a L14-30 receptacle. This is a 30 amp, 240 volt connection. In order to properly connect to your home's main electrical panel and get the most out of this generator, you will need a manual transfer switch. Below is a link to the Power Transfer systems which include the Manual Transfer Switch, Inlet Box and Power Cord.

30-Amp Power Transfer Systems

While the Reliance Controls product is a popular option, I feel that the Generac 6294 is more suitable for your installation. The Generac 6294 is more versatile and allows you to interchange the breakers.

While this will be sufficient to power your forced air furnace, we do not recommend that you attempt to run your central A/C due to the amount of power needed at startup which will far exceed this generators capabilities.

As an example my 3-ton AC unit requires 48A at start-up which is close to 11,500 watts and every time the compressor motor kicks on it needs the 48A. So, if I had a 12,000 watt generator running the AC along with any other items in my home I could easily overload the generator.

This is why we do not recommend using any portable generator to power central AC.

If you want to power AC you need to step up to a permanent home standby generator.

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Which transfer switch would you recommend for Generac 5500?
by Richie Newfield from New York on September 03, 2013

A: The Generac 5500 watt generators have a 30A 4-Prong 240V twistlock outlet which you would use to connect to a manual transfer switch using a generator power cord.

The following 30A switch kit is a recommendation found under the hand-picked accessories tab available on product page for each generator model....

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Is the LP5500 safe to use with modern electronics?
by Jim Chapman from Missouri on June 18, 2013

A: Standard emergency portable generators are not designed to power sensitive electronics unless otherwise stated. The Generac LP models are not designed for this and there are only a few models that state they can.

The only models would be small inverter generators (gasoline), the Winco Tri-Fuel portables (<6% THD), the Generac XP Professional Models (<6% THD) and the permanent home standby systems.

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Do any of the portable generators come with transfer switches?
by Hal from Connecticut on March 28, 2013

A: There are some kits available.

Both kits above are gasoline operated only.

Great Product - Alternative To Gasoline!
Jim Braugher in Technical Support @ EGD was instrumental in our decision to purchase the Generac LP5500 due to his level of expertise and timeless assistance. The Generac LP5500 (propane model) started right up and has an easy start up with the "Power Dial". The hood can easily be removed for maintenance and it's made in the USA. It also has an hour meter on the front panel and will shut down if oil runs too low.

Great Generator
As advertised started on first pull. Easy to turn over unlike some generators. Added front wheels for easy movement by my wife. Even my daughter can start it! Not very loud at all for its size. Love it! It would get a higher rating if it had electric start.

First Real Use
To update my previous review, we had a tornado and I had to use my LP5500 for real life. I was able to run one deep freeze and two refrigerators no problem and added my aerobic septic system and a few things at a time, and never taxed my unit, which I didn't want to do. I was able to get 6 hours run time from a 20# LP bottle and run an hour and off an hour so I got 12 hours clock time from each bottle at about 85 degrees midday heat. Great unit well pleased plus.

Easy Peasy
It was easy to unpack and assemble. I had no problem getting a 30 lb. tank to fuel it with all that's left is to use it. The only question was is it right that the tank will hold 7.5 gal. of propane?

Manufacturer Response
Brand Rep
Dean,
Thank you for providing us with your review of the LP5500 portable generator. Please know that we do not manufacture or provide propane tanks for use with our portable generators. As the tanks would need to be acquired post-purchase, we would recommend contacting your local fuel line provider with any questions regarding the capacity ratings of a particular tank. If there are any questions that we can answer for your regarding a Generac brand product, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722). Again, we thank you for your thoughtful feedback.

Convenient Portability, Easy Operation, Cleaner Energy Source
I live in a rural area with a history of power outages that can last a few days or more. (A few rural properties on a remote branch of the grid isn't a high priory when nearby towns are also affected.)

I wanted an emergency generator with enough power to run a refrigerator, two freezers and still have enough to operate a few lights and a corded power tool like a circular saw. (Who knows what you'll find yourself needing to do in an emergency.)

I chose propane because it lasts years. (Gas... more

One Year Update...
Hi all
I am a novice at all this but wanted to update one year post purchase of this propane generator. We ended up not needing in this last winter (we live in Massachusetts) but that meant it hadn't been started in over a year. We keep the generator inside our basement when not in use so it stays around 70 year round. The propane tanks are kept outside (I can't speak to their efficiency at low temperatures vs. gasoline but the lack of worrying about additives to the gasoline and upkeep on the... more

Happy
After fighting with an old gas generator with float problems i bought this LP5500. Just the fact this can sit for years without maintenance makes it worth it right off the bat. The runtime seems to be short. I wonder if there is a Natural gas conversion so i can just hook to the house when needed. Other than that. Hope i don't need it but i'm ready for when i do. Oh... Started in 3 pulls right out of the box. Will be putting lighter weight oil in as well.

The box was a little banged up from the truck but seems to be alright. We have not tested it yet as we are waiting for the electrician for a disconnect box. I truly pray it starts this winter if we need it as we live in Minnesota.

Safer Than Gas!
Having gas containers in a residential setting for emergency use is not desirable. Yet most people have propane around for BBQ use and patio heaters. Why not have the emergency generator source the same fuel which is already present.....you agree. I thought so!

So Far, So Good
Received the unit on time. Delivery truck had a lift gate and it was no problem getting the pallet into the garage for assembly. Assembly means putting on the wheels and filling with oil. No problem there!

I purchased a 30# LPG cylinder which balances the unit well making for fairly easy moving. It is heavy, but even my wife can wheel it around. I put in 5W-30 weight oil as we live in N. Michigan and it gets cold here in the winter. The unit started easily after 3 - 4 pulls on a 25 F... more
