Q: Can I use this with my Generac GP 3250 generator?
by Kurt Hanie from New Jersey on January 12, 2013

A: Sorry, you cannot use model 6112 cord with your Generac GP3250 (5982) generator. Your generator has a 20A 4-Prong outlet so any power cord you want to use must be 20A 4-prong and have twist-lock cord end L14-20.

Q: I have a Zoller M53 sump pump that I want to run off of a small generator when we have power outages. What should I look for?
by Kelsey Stone from Illinois on January 12, 2013

A: The Zoller M53 pump requires 25.9 starting amps to operate properly and when calculated using Ohms Law (Amps x Volts = Watts) you need to have a generator that is at least 3108 watts.....25.9A x 120V = 3108W.

With this said the Generac GP1800 is definitely not big enough to handle your pump and we recommend getting the GP3250 if this is the only item you intend on powering.

Note: Rule of thumb when properly sizing a generator is to size it to 80% of its running capacity so it has the flexibility to handle starting surge loads without overloading the generator or put a big strain on the engine and alternator.

Q: Jim. Need an emergency generator for my home. Not looking to run the entire house but perhaps a sump, refrig, a few lights, computer, etc... Suggestions?
Also, do I need an inverter type?

by Robert Preston from Rhode Island on July 28, 2012

A: If you are intending on powering any sensitive electronics you will need to go to an inverter style generator since standard open frame style generators are for emergency items only such as motor loads like your refrigerator.

To be comfortable (without electronics) you would want to go with a 5000 watt model or larger so you are not running it at 100% all the time.

The rule of thumb when sizing a generator is to size it to 80% of its running load output or add 20% to your calculations so you are not overworking the gen.

To calculate wattage you would use Ohms Law.....Starting Amps x Volts = Watts.

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Jim, we purchased a new generator and we put gas in it to check to see how it runs. My question is how do we store this machine ~ with or without gas? Also, we were told to start the machine once a month. Is this true? Thank you for your help.
by Patricia Courtemanche from Massachusetts on May 03, 2012

A: The best thing is to follow the owner's manual. If you intend on storing the generator for an extended amount of time there are procedures in the manual that you will need to follow for your specific model.

If you intend on keeping gasoline in the unit you must use a fuel stabilizer like StaBil which keeps the fuel fresh as gasoline will go bad in 30 Days.

If you are not doing long term storage you should start your generator every couple of weeks so the engine gets properly lubricated and you are moving fuel through the fuel system which prevents buildup.

Q: Do Generac GP series generators have brush or brushless alternators?
by John from Maryland on October 02, 2011

A: All of the GP series generators have a brushed alternator.
by Mike, Product Expert
Q: I just received the generator I purchased from you (Generac GP5500 - 5500 Watt Portable Generator) and it comes with a bottle of oil. It does not say on the bottle what type it is. 30 weight or 10w30? Do you know so that it is the proper oil to use for the current temperature.
Thanks, Larry

by Larry from Ohio on March 26, 2011

A: Generac uses 10W30 in their kits that get sent with the portable generators.

If you are looking for a small generator to run the basics like a refrigerator or a sump pump, then you have picked the right model.

This is our smallest generator and will power a few small appliances to get you through the storm.

For this price you can get peace of mind that if you are home you can keep the food cold and the basement dry, but that's about it. If you want to add a few more small appliances we recommend you take a step up.

Love It!
This is a great product that works well and is good quality. An electric start is the only thing I'd wish for. Comes ready to use, just add oil and gas. Easy set-up and operation.
Pros: Durable, Easy To Use, Quiet, Exceeded Expectations

Do Not Buy This Generator!
Bought this generator and after only its 2nd use (during the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy) it stopped working completely, leaking oil amongst other things. Brought it to local service after horrible experience with Generac customer service, the worst I have ever encountered. If you were able to get someone, they did absolutely nothing to help and did not get back to me as they promised to repeatedly.

The service center looked at the unit and said it was badly damaged internally in several... more

Research Carefully
I bought 2 of these generators in an attempt to keep cost down for 2 familys. Cannot run anything that draws more that 14 Amps. Had calculated running Watts ok for furnace and refrigerator, but due to only having a 14 Amp breaker on the generator cannot power the load from a oil burner motor and starting load of the blower fan. Is too bad that these units dont have a 15 Amp breaker, Who has 14 Amp breakers in a house? Come on Generac really...

Emergency Power!
I recently purchased my Generac GP3250 from EGD. It was easy to assemble the basic items, wheels, handle and the frame foot. It could not of come at a better time because here in the pacific northwest we were hammered by a wicked snowstorm followed by a ice storm in which we went without power for several hours.

Needless to say our Generac went into action and we were able to power up our most basic needs like the pellet stove, refrigerator and TV. In all honesty it is not as quiet as I... more

Storm Saver
We purchased this just before Hurricane Sandy hit and it was one of the best purchases we ever made. We ended up losing power for 6 full days.

The generator is just big enough to run the essentials and small enough to be easy to store, which was an important consideration in my case.

It ran hard right out of the box but we did the proper oil changes so it will be up and ready if and when the next big storm hits. We will be making sure we have a little more gasoline stockpiled for... more

Awesome Generator
During hurricane Irene the power went out in my town and all the surrounding towns. Everyone was in a mad scramble for generators, I was upset that I couldn't find one, but you know the old saying "good things come to those who wait." I went online, did my research on generators instead of buying the first available generator from some over priced store.

I found EGD and ordered the Generac GP3250. I love it, the thing fired up on the first pull and it is super quite. I dont have... more

Sandy Made Me Buy It
I live in NJ and ordered this generator the Friday before Hurricane Sandy passed through on a Monday night. It was back ordered with a note that it would be about a week before they could ship. Long story short, it was shipped that Monday, the day of storm, so much quicker than indicated.

The storm delayed things a few days, but I had it up and running one week after ordering it (Friday). It fired right up and I let it run for 24 hours straight. No issues, no problems, and it performed... more

I found myself in a much similar situation as John from freehold, also frustrated, I turned to EGD, I should have gone first. The unit is small its about the size of a typical 2200 watt unit but just a bit heavier the wheels and handle makes for easy navigation from storage, its nice and quiet. This may not run 10 sump pumps but it ran everything I threw at it. To top it off a lot of people bought generators this past hurricane and looking at some of them, and prices they paid compared to my... more

Great Experience
Generator arrived right on schedule in excellent condition. Driver very helpful unloading etc. Unit started up on 2nd pull. Unit has been wired to my elictrical panel by licensed electrician with interlock switch. All according to code.

I am in the process of building an enclosure to house the generator for the times it will need to operate. My suggestion for PED would be to offer a collapsible enclosure as an option. The odds are that when the generator is needed to operate the odds are... more

Good Value For Emergency Power
I received my generator in just a few days. Good value for the money. Power Equipment Direct is the way to go. I ordered my battery backup sump pump and now this generator from Power Equipment Direct. Very satisfied and would recommend them to anyone.
