HOW TO ACCURATELY MEASURE GENERATOR CABLE LENGTH
Measuring manufactured generator cable assemblies (the cable between the generator and the automatic transfer switch) accurately does not need to be complicated.
Follow these steps, and you will always purchase just the right amount of cable!
Step 1: Measure the distance from the Generator to the Automatic Transfer Switch
If you are installing cables in your attic or basement, you should consider the depth of the joists or rafters in your measurements.
When determining the distance between the generator and the automatic transfer switch, always measure at right angles, square, and perpendicular to structures and dwelling foundations – never measure in a straight line.
Step 2: Generator cable requirements
Add an extra 10 feet to your total distance for the generator cable.
This will cover the cable used inside the generator enclosure.
Step 3: Automatic Transfer Switch cable requirements
Add 5 feet to your total distance for the Transfer Switch cable.
This will cover the cable used vertically and inside the Transfer Switch.
Step 4: Total Cable Length
Once you have measured the distance between the generator and the automatic transfer switch and added the generator and the automatic transfer switch cable requirements, take that footage and round up to the next highest five-foot increment.
For example, if your total length from steps 1, 2, and 3 equals 48 feet, you will round up to 50 feet for ordering purposes.
Following these steps will ensure you have an accurate cable length and minimize waste and unused cable for your project!
Please note, all cut to length cable sales are final. No returns accepted.
