Answer
In regards to your question, proper sizing of the generator is crucial to the success of any generator installation and requires a good working knowledge of electricity and its characteristics, as well as the varying requirements of the electrical equipment comprising the load.

A certified electrician needs to be consulted for proper sizing and installation of any generator.

When analyzing the electrical load, consult the manufacturer’s nameplate on each major appliance or piece of equipment to determine its starting requirements in terms of amps and voltage which can be calculated to watts using Ohms Law (Amps x Volts = Watts).

When choosing the generator output select a rating that is approximately 20 to 25% higher than the peak load (for example, if the load is about 8 kilowatts, select a 10 kW generator).

A higher rated generator will operate comfortably at approximately 80% of its full capacity and will provide a margin of flexibility if the load increases in the future.

Note: Applications that are commercial, all-electric homes, have heat pump systems or geothermal systems require special installation procedures and a certified electrician must be contacted to evaluate and install these types of systems.

you suggest starting a generator once a week to keep lubricated, but what If I store it in my shed till i need it and can't always get to it. I don't want to keep gas in it.Is it going to damage the unit if I don't start it?
John

Answer
If you do not run the unit weekly (Per manufactures instructions) you will need to prepare the unit for long term storage and manufacturers can have a different method. You should review the owner's manual for the specific units process.

Typically the oil and gas needs to be drained and the spark plug pulled so you can put oil in the combustion chamber to prevent rusting in the engine cylinder chamber plus some other steps.

Honestly, it is easier and gives more reassurance that the unit will work when needed when you run it weekly for 10 minutes.

Can I use synthetic oil in the generator of equal viscosity to the required oil?
Bill
from Connecticut
February 25, 2012
Answer
Some manufacturers recommend using 5W30 Synthetic oil for cold weather conditions.

However, Powermate does not recommend using a synthetic oil. Please refer to your owner's manual for proper oil types based on temperature ranges in your area.

Hi Jim I bought a Powermate PM0105007 - 5000 watt gas power electric generator from home depot. The engine is a RATO made in china. Am I going to be ok with this?
John Miller
from Washington
January 22, 2012
Answer
Yes, you should be find with this engine. Engines from China have been in the US for 8 - 9 years and have really had no major issues over the last 5 years and parts are typically accessible if needed.

The key is to do proper maintenance such as running the unit every week to every couple of weeks to keep the internals proper lubricated and prevent moisture build-up.

This also gives piece of mind knowing it is going to work when you need it.

Proper oil changes and using clean fresh fuel with a fuel stabilizer is extremely important.

Read the owner's manual from cover to cover as there is usually a ton of information that is extremely helpful.
