Hi Mike. I have about a 1800 squ. ft house that is well insulated. I have a geo thermal heat pump for furnace and ac. I also have 2 pellet stoves one up stairs and one down stairs. I have a well that is 54 ft. deep and is run by a 3/4 horse motor. I also have ham radio gear that I would like to be abele to run. I also have 2 refrigerators a electric stove an 80 gallon hot water heater and an electric dryer. If I do not use the geo thermal heat pump what size generator will I need to run the house? I was thinking I could get away with a 12k generator.

Answer
In regards to your question, proper sizing of the generator is crucial to the success of any generator installation and requires a good working knowledge of electricity and its characteristics, as well as the varying requirements of the electrical equipment comprising the load. A certified electrician needs to be consulted for proper sizing and installation of any generator. When analyzing the electrical load, consult the manufacturer’s nameplate on each major appliance or piece of equipment to determine its starting requirements in terms of amps and voltage which can be calculated to watts using Ohms Law (Amps x Volts = Watts). When choosing the generator output select a rating that is approximately 20 to 25% higher than the peak load (for example, if the load is about 8 kilowatts, select a 10 kW generator). A higher rated generator will operate comfortably at approximately 80% of its full capacity and will provide a margin of flexibility if the load increases in the future. Note: Applications that are commercial, all-electric homes, have heat pump systems or geothermal systems require special installation procedures and a certified electrician must be contacted to evaluate and install these types of systems.

What's the maximum distance that the generator can be placed from the transfer switch? What is the length of the prewired cord and how far can it be extended?

Answer
There is no specific distance stated by the manufacturer for distance from the switch.

The prewired whip is 25 feet long and you must follow national and local electric codes. So, to put it another way, Briggs & Stratton will not dictate the length after their whip because if you use the right materials, spelled out in code, there is no limit to the distance you can extend.

We recommend you consult with a "Certified" electrician who is familiar with all national and local electrical code requirements for proper installation.
