Hi Mike. I have about a 1800 squ. ft house that is well insulated. I have a geo thermal heat pump for furnace and ac. I also have 2 pellet stoves one up stairs and one down stairs. I have a well that is 54 ft. deep and is run by a 3/4 horse motor. I also have ham radio gear that I would like to be abele to run. I also have 2 refrigerators a electric stove an 80 gallon hot water heater and an electric dryer. If I do not use the geo thermal heat pump what size generator will I need to run the house? I was thinking I could get away with a 12k generator.

Answer
In regards to your question, proper sizing of the generator is crucial to the success of any generator installation and requires a good working knowledge of electricity and its characteristics, as well as the varying requirements of the electrical equipment comprising the load. A certified electrician needs to be consulted for proper sizing and installation of any generator. When analyzing the electrical load, consult the manufacturer’s nameplate on each major appliance or piece of equipment to determine its starting requirements in terms of amps and voltage which can be calculated to watts using Ohms Law (Amps x Volts = Watts). When choosing the generator output select a rating that is approximately 20 to 25% higher than the peak load (for example, if the load is about 8 kilowatts, select a 10 kW generator). A higher rated generator will operate comfortably at approximately 80% of its full capacity and will provide a margin of flexibility if the load increases in the future. Note: Applications that are commercial, all-electric homes, have heat pump systems or geothermal systems require special installation procedures and a certified electrician must be contacted to evaluate and install these types of systems.

I'm looking at your 7kw Generac and the add says 7kw but the features info show 6kw? The Briggs specs say it can be placed as close as 18 to the house and I read from a customer the composite cover of the Generac has to be 5 feet away? Can you clarify for me?

Answer
The wattage output change is based on the fuel type you would be using. When using Natural Gas all generators have a wattage drop. The Generac CorePower unit outputs 7kW when operating on LP Gas and 6kW when operating on NG.

The Briggs model does recommend a minimum of 18 inches since it has a steel enclosure and the Generac CorePower has a composite enclosure so 5 feet is required as a minimum. We recommend upgrading to the Briggs & Stratton 8kW if you plan on having the unit closer to the house since it has a steel enclosure.

Please keep in mind that local code can supersede the distance on any generator so you must check with your local inspector or AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) for your local code requirements.
