Hi Mike. I have about a 1800 squ. ft house that is well insulated. I have a geo thermal heat pump for furnace and ac. I also have 2 pellet stoves one up stairs and one down stairs. I have a well that is 54 ft. deep and is run by a 3/4 horse motor. I also have ham radio gear that I would like to be abele to run. I also have 2 refrigerators a electric stove an 80 gallon hot water heater and an electric dryer. If I do not use the geo thermal heat pump what size generator will I need to run the house? I was thinking I could get away with a 12k generator.

Answer
In regards to your question, proper sizing of the generator is crucial to the success of any generator installation and requires a good working knowledge of electricity and its characteristics, as well as the varying requirements of the electrical equipment comprising the load. A certified electrician needs to be consulted for proper sizing and installation of any generator. When analyzing the electrical load, consult the manufacturer’s nameplate on each major appliance or piece of equipment to determine its starting requirements in terms of amps and voltage which can be calculated to watts using Ohms Law (Amps x Volts = Watts). When choosing the generator output select a rating that is approximately 20 to 25% higher than the peak load (for example, if the load is about 8 kilowatts, select a 10 kW generator). A higher rated generator will operate comfortably at approximately 80% of its full capacity and will provide a margin of flexibility if the load increases in the future. Note: Applications that are commercial, all-electric homes, have heat pump systems or geothermal systems require special installation procedures and a certified electrician must be contacted to evaluate and install these types of systems.

How does this unit handle load management? I have two AC units and a couple high-wattage appliances. Would I require additional load modules, or can it manage six loads (more if bundled) out of the box as I've been told? Also, someone told me that the ATS amperage has to match the service amerage. I have 300a service (150x2), so the statement suggested I can't use the 400a ATS of this unit. Is there any veracity to this claim? Thanks a lot.

Answer
The unit (40396) by itself is set to handle up to 2 standard AC units with its ACCM technology, but if you want to add additional large wattage loads you would need to get their Load Control Center (Command Central™) which can handle up to 4 additional large load items.

Command Central - Load Control Center

Typically yes, the transfer switch amperage needs to match the incoming utility amperage. However, some local codes allow a larger transfer switch since the switch is a pass through device while you are on utility service where your main breaker is the safety device for your electrical system. You will need to check with your local inspector or AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) to see if they will allow it.

If that is not an option then then suggestion would be the purchase the Generac 20kW model 6250 and then their 300A ATS which has built-in load shedding with the only additional items required to manage the other loads (other then AC) would be the PMM modules - (1) 6199 & (3) 6186.

Generac Model 6250

Generac Model RTSY300A3 - 300A ATS

Generac Model 6199 - PMM With 24V Start Kit (1 Required if adding any additional load controls)

Generac Model 6186 - PMM Only (Up To 3)

I need a 20kW natural gas generator. But they seem to only come with a 200A panel. I believe I need a 300A panel. Is there a big price difference in purchasing a 300A panel with the generator? I didn't see it on your website. Can you tell me the price?

Answer
If you have a specific application that does not meet the prepackaged units you would purchase the items individually instead. The packaged systems are put together by the appropriate manufacturer and cannot be altered.

Briggs does not offer a 300A switch so you would need to go to the larger 400A switch if you intend on powering the entire home and that system is already prepackaged. (Model 40396).

Generac does offer a 300A switch so you would purchase the generator by itself (Model 6250) and the switch separately (Model RTSY300A3). Just add each item to the cart and enter your state and zip for the total.

We do recommend consulting with a certified electrician for proper generator sizing and installation.
