Recreational Power
Picking the Perfect Generator for Your Campsite

Standby generators are similar to central air conditioners. Recreational generators bring the conveniences of modern living into some of the remotest areas on Earth.

If used incorrectly, they can also spoil the peaceful tranquility shared by all.

So how do you pick the perfect recreational generator without upsetting your neighbors?

Just follow these two simple steps:

How Much Juice to Produce?

Yes, you can find various wattage calculators online. However, Electric Generators Direct.com stopped using them several years ago because they are rarely accurate.

Since recreational generators produce limited wattage, it's vital to know the exact wattages of your appliances -- not some online estimate.

There are two simple ways to determine the wattage of your appliances:

1. Data Plate
The easiest way is to just look at the data plate on the back of your appliance. It will tell you how many watts, amps and volts are required to power the appliance. Reliance AmWatt Load Tester

2. Wattage Meter
You can also use a wattage meter to measure the EXACT amount of power. Simply plug the appliance into the wattage meter. Then plug the wattage meter into the wall to get an accurate measurement.

STEP 1: Determine Your Wattage
Recreational generators basically come in two sizes: tiny and small.

Coleman Powermate Mega Pulse Recreational Generator Tiny recreational generators produce 1,000 watts of power -- just enough electricity to power one or two appliances simultaneously.

Small recreational generators generate 2,000 watts of juice and are designed to power multiple appliances simultaneously.

The key word is "simultaneously". If you simply want to brew a cup of coffee in the morning, a tiny generator will suffice. You can always unplug the coffee maker then plug in the toaster to toast your bagel.

On the other hand, you may not want to hear the angry roar of fellow tailgaters when you unplug the television in order to start the blender. If you need to power multiple appliances at once, you'll need a larger generator.

Do You Need a Tiny or a Small Recreational Generator?
