Q: I have a Makita 7" angle grinder that I use to cut and grind stone. It has a 15 amp motor which I calculate to draw 1800 watts on average, but I'm not sure about the start-up draw, which could be 3 times that much. What size generator do you recommend I buy to use with this grinder, if I do not use any other appliances at the same time?

A: The best way to size the unit is to find out the starting amp draw on the grinder which you are correct to say that it can be 3 times, maybe even 5 times higher then the running load. It is also good to double check your model number on the Makita, if it has a "S" at the end of the model number you may have a soft start unit.

You should take an amp meter and test the starting amperage then use the following formula to properly size the unit. (Starting Amps x Volts = Watts)

Note: Proper sizing of the generator is based on 80% of the generators running capacity, so when a large load kicks in the unit has enough flexibility to handle it and still provide clean voltage output.
