Q: Jim - I have a JD 5410. I believe the PTO is rated at 65 HP. I would like to be able to drive entire house including water pump, heating, and all electrics. What would you recommend? Thanks. Joe Adams by Joe Adams from New York on March 12, 2011
A: The largest PTO generator you can use is 32.5kW which is based on 1000 watts for every 2 HP. The larger the generator the more items you can power and less stress on the unit. Winco does produce and exceptional product and this 25kW model would work great in your application.
We do recommend that a certified electrician validate your wattage needs to verify this unit is not undersized.

Jim's Recommendation
Winco has been a manufacturer of quality PTO generators since the 1950's with the original goal and purpose of keeping American farms operational at a time when frequent power outages were the norm. Their PTO generators are reliable, safe and sought after to this day.
This 25kW from Winco offers you more power, but will require additional HP from your tractor. The rule of thumb is that you need about 2HP for every kW of power. So in this instance you are looking at a minimum of 50-HP tractor.
Once you pair this PTO generator up with a manual transfer switch you have access to run the necessary appliances in the event of power outage.
Just like our "good" recommendation you can get 25kW of power for the price of a portable generator.

Gear Oil Plug Issue
The gear oil plug in my new generator was so tight that I could not get it off with a regular wrench. It is a 7-16" square plug head. I tried all the methods I had used in the past to no avail. A regular 7-16 box head wrench would just slip off because it would not seat all the way. So I called the customer service POC of the generator company and was told I need to get a square socket. Good advice if you have one or can find one.
Since I did not any square sockets, I started looking and found that you can't buy a square socket in that size. I finally got on Amazon and found a specialty wrench for $25. Add $10 for shipping. And so for $35 I was able to get the plug out to add gear oil.
When I asked the company (Winco), I found out that they put the plugs in with an air wrench. Really? I also wrote the company twice on their web site and received no reply either time. It may turn out to be a good generator, but their customer service is really customer NO service.

The Best Generator and the Best Company
I recently bought a Winco 25kW PTO generator from Electric Generators Direct. Jim Baugher is the GREATEST. He is extremely knowledgeable about all generators especially PTO Generators. I ordered over the internet but Jim called me at my home to be sure the order was complete.
He worked with Jeff Harmon at the Winco plant DIRECTLY by phone and email to get me the right generator and accessories.I had some questions after I got the generator and called Jim at EGD. I spoke with him directly, not someone who wasn't familiar with my order. This was great!!! I can't say enough GOOD about Jim and EGD. Also, Jeff Harmon at Winco went above and beyond to get the accessories that I needed with the generator.
The generator operates perfect. I have a 50hp Kubota tractor to run the generator. When I engaged the PTO and turned up the RPM's, the easy to read voltmeter showed the correct voltage the generator was putting out. I checked the voltage and hertz with a test meter and it was right on the mark. I ran my whole house(8000 square feet) during a recent ice storm with the Winco without even a whimper from the generator. I ran a double electric oven, an electric range, water heaters, refrig., freezers, ceiling fans, TV's, VCR's, computers, and all the lights both indoor and outdoor. Sometimes most all running at once!! My kids only missed a couple of minutes of their TV show while I cranked the tractor and plugged in the generator!!!
I would DEFINITELY recommend buying a Winco PTO generator to anyone. And I would DEFINITELY recommend buying it form ELECTRIC GENERATORS DIRECT compared to anyone else. They are extremely knowledgeable about the generators they sell and will go out of their way to make sure you are satisfied. Also, if you have any questions about setting up the generator after it is delivered, you can call Jim at EGD and he will "walk you through the process"!!
I am EXTREMELY SATISFIED with my new WINCO as well as ELECTRIC GENERATORS DIRECT.
