  1 Question
Q: what is difference between brushed and brushless alternator? What is better? What is thd of this unit.
by Johnny Cakes from New Jersey on September 03, 2012

A: True brush type generators are almost obsolete. They used carbon brushes riding on a brass slip ring to collect power from the rotor. Today, there are brushless field generators that take power from the stator and not thru the brush rack. Just about all generators today are brushless field variety but most will still have a pair of brushes on the rotor for field excitation.

None of the above are better or worse than the others. I'm still 'old school' in that I like the old brush type machines as they were great electric motor starters and had clean power output (low THD). My point is - don't be afraid of brushes.

This model is brushless field, with the AVR/excitation forced thru brushes. The resulting power is about 8-10% THD - which is good for a generator. Utility power is less than 5%.

Very Pleased
After purchasing and returning 2 COSTCO store generators for not being able to smoothly run with 24 amp load, we researched and purchased a similarly rated Subaru SGX7500E generator. It came well packaged with no damage and started right up. It handles the same electric load flawlessly.

First Encounter
It arrived before the date it was promised. It was packaged well, no shipping damage.

It appears to be well made and sturdy. I assembled the handles and wheels easily. Added oil and gas, hooked up the battery, & turned the starter key- it started right away and ran smoothly.

I have not had the chance for emergency use, but it promises to be reliable from the Subaru-Robin engine's reputation.

Periodic running episodes since it's arrival have been smooth, without any hitches.

Thanks For Robin Subaru
Thanks for getting the generator shipped so quickly. We usually have a 5 day power outage at least once a year in the mountains of WNC, thanks to Progress Energy. So we rely on a generator to provide power to our well and lights, refrig, water heater. We have Vermont Castings Propane Stoves for heat that we only use in power outages due to the cost of propane now.

Thanks to the staff at Robin-Subaru. Our generator arrived with some small shipping damage to the air cleaner box. No fault of... more

Bad Gfi
The generator shipped quickly, but arrived with damage to the air cleaner cover. After assembly I fired up the engine, it ran and sounded good. When I flipped the breaker the 110v GFIs tripped out with nothing even plugged in. I had to take it to a service center. This is a major problem as the unit is over 200 lbs. That being said, the machine looks quality and has a Subaru engine. I hope my problems are behind me.
