Greatly Flexible 10-circuit Manual Switch
After numerous years of putting up with dirty power and extended power outages, I realized that I needed a generator backup system. I did not have a lot of cash to spend on this. A logical solution for me was to be as utilitarian as possible.

Our house is just shy of 2200 sqft with a seperate water well and anerobic septic system and most of the modern appliances. In order to be as comfortable as possible and not break the bank I picked a 10-Circuit 50AMP capacity switch made by Reliance... more

I Like The Cuttler-hammer Breakers
During the last power failure, over 8 hours, the house got fairly warm and my wife asked what it would take to run the Air Conditioning with the generator. We had a Coleman 5kw generator with Generac 30amp manual tranfer panel. I have now replaced the 30amp panel with the Reliance Q510C 50amp transfer panel. I like the Cuttler-Hammer breakers in this panel.

My next move is to purchase a Generac 5802 XG10000E 10kw generator from Electric Generators Direct. I do all my own elecrical work, so... more

Only Number 10 Wire
The process of ordering from Generators Direct was fine. I had researched manual transfer switches very well and the reviews of the one that finally ordered, (Reliance 50 amp with breakers) were very good.

When I got the switch I opened it up to see where you would connect my 50 amp input cable into I noticed that the two hot leads were only number 10 wire. This would be fine for 30 amp but not 50 amp. I called Reliance and ask them why this was, why it wasn't number 6 wire. I was told that... more

Robert,
Although we typically do not recite the standards from the National Electric Code (NEC) all that often, what Reliance claims is true and deemed safe by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). Wires run less than 1 foot are allowed to drop gauges provided they still pass the UL inspection. In the case of this Reliance panel, they did pass and the UL certification is intact on this model so it is safe.

Questionable Quality For Gen Power Connection Within The Panel
This unit is of what I feel is fairly high quality. I like the fact that it uses standard breakers and that they can be replaced. I do question the choice of the terminal block reliance has chosen to connect the generators output to however.

While working within electrical panels, and comparing the screw connections on your typical circuit breaker to the Radio Shack quality terminal block reliance controls provides to connect a 50 amp line to, I think they dropped the ball.

50 Amp 10 Circuit
Arrived on time and was very straight forward. Two minor comments. Circuit markings on wires to connect to main panel very hard to read. Also using the internal current loops-hard to thread through the wires. Other than that-exceeded my expectations-and best of all my wife feels comfortable in using!
Pros: High Quality, Easy To Use, Exceeded Expectations, I'd Buy It Again
Cons: Minor Comments, Installation Guidelines

50 Amp Transfer Switch
Setting house up for power outages. Bought this to protect line men when doing repairs. It is actually very easy to install with basic knowledge of electric wiring. The operation is even more simple than I had anticipated. If your going to do this kind of set up I highly recommend this product. It is a little pricy but you get what you pay for!

Cons: Expensive

Q510c Installation
I have some home wiring experience, but this is the first time I have installed a generator contact switch. The directions were easy to follow and I did not encounter any problems. The wires are color coded to eliminate any problems.

It is important to be sure to locate the box in a position that allows for a large enough knockout in the main panel, and that the wires in the generator switch will reach the desired circuit breakers in the main panel.

I would buy it again.

Installation
Installation was easy for the average home owner as long as you are comfortable working in the main electric panel. Take your time and do one breaker at at time. My only complaint is that the wires coming from the transfer switch are not long enough as well as the metal flexible conduit. I added length with additional #12 wire and wire nuts. It would have been much cleaner if the wires were 12" inches longer.
Pros: Features, Price

Almost Looking Forward To The Next Outage
I bought this model because of simplicity of installation and its use of standard circuit breakers that can be changed out to tailor the installation to my needs.

Everything installed exactly as expected with no issues. I haven't had a power outage yet, but I just received my new 7 kW generator and had to try the whole system out. It worked beautifully.

With this transfer switch I can control power to most of the rooms of my house, including the ever-important refrigerators,... more

Excellent Transfer Switch For 50 Amp Service
Easy to install, only drawback I discovered when using 6 gauge wire from generator plug to the transfer switch to get the 50 amp rating, 6 gauge wire will not fit into the provided connector solution is to remove the connector and use wire nuts to connect. Easy to wire into your existing breaker panel. Provided watt meters are great for balancing the load on each leg. Highly recommend if you need 50 amp backup service.

Fast And Easy Install
After Sandy and fortunately being out of power for only 6 hours total, I decided it was time to upgrade my 6 circuit transfer switch to the Q510C.

Shipping was fast. Installation was completed in about 6 hours total time. Installation was easy and instructions were spot on. It now allows me run 8 circuits of 110 and a 220 circuit for my well pump.

My next purchase will be to upgrade my 5500 Kubota generator to an 8000 watt one.

Manual Transfer Switch
I installed this switch with the help of an electrician and all went well. It could have been a bit more flexible in hardware couplers which would have negated us using other hardware to mount it where we had too but I suppose the hardware they send it with will serve 80% of those installing the switch where they show it installed in their diagrams. The crossover switches to switch from the power company to generator power are a little easy to switch for my tastes but since most switches are... more

Not Hooked Up Yet
Actually haven't used it yet, have it mounted and wires pulled into the main panel for completion sometime in next couple of weeks. Didn't need the 20amp dbl pole breaker so replaced it with 2 single pole 20amp breakers. Sure been a hard decision as to where to hook them and keep the lines balanced. The hardest part of the project so far has been pulling the 6/3w gnd wire thru the basement trusses for 55feet. Have the outside receptacle wired and the cable snaked to the transfer switch. Peace Of Mind
I purchased a 10kw generator after hurricane Sandy. I wanted to be able to run all of the basic circuits during a power outage without having a spiderís web of extension cords. Connecting the important circuits to a manual transfer switch seemed to be the right answer. Installation was easy with one exception. The wires for 8 of the 10 circuits were not labeled. I had to trace and label them myself. Other than that installation was great.

I read the reviews and agree that the terminal block... more

October 2011 Nor'easter
In October of this year, an early Autumn Nor'easter hit Connecticut with a foot of heavy, wet snow. The leaves had not fallen off the trees yet, so the added weight of the snow took down trees and large limbs. This in turn took down power lines and smashed substations. The overall effect was that over 850,000 customers of Connectict power companies were without power for up to ten days. I lost power for 2 days, and my Generac 5734 generator with the Reliance Controls 50-amp transfer switch... more

Reliance Controls 50-amp (120/240v 10-circuit) Transfer Switch W/ Interchangeable Breakers Review
After looking at a number of transfer switches I settled on the Q510. It went it very easily and it took me a weekend to finish the job (not working full time). I like the prewired harness and the ability to replace/switch breakers in the panel.

I have a 7500 w portable generator and it works fine using this panel. A bit pricey (you can get cheaper ones from GeneratorsDirect that have fewer circuits), but I like having the flexibility that the 10 circuit panel provides. I now have all my... more

My Customer Is Very Impressed.
I had a customer that wanted to have some sort of power back up, JUST IN CASE! and I researched various switches, and found the Q510C and explained what it would do. This customer had his own generator, which was 10kw and was great for what he needed, after the install he pulled his generator to the hook up point. I turned his main power to the house off as though there were a power outage, started the generator and turned all switches to generator and he was very excited that they could... more

Awesome Transfer Switch At The Best Price
This transfer switch was very easy to install and allows for a large amount of flexibility. It took me 2-3 hours to install. This switch is worth the extra few bucks because it allows you to configure the double pole 20a and 30a switches to single pole 20(s) and 30(s). I purchased the replacement single pole breakers for 3$ each. It took me 5 min to switch the double pole breakers into the correct configuration.

The only small down size to this switch is the wires could be about a foot... more

Recent Outage
My family recently had a two day outage in 95 plus temps. I had the 10k Generator but had to wire pigtails to run various appliances. When we finally got line electricity back I ordered the 10 circuit manual transfer switch. When it came in I installed it, tested it and now am totally ready to cope with the next outage. We won't have everything we do when we have line voltage, but we won't lose refrigerator or freezer food, we'll have water for cooking, drinking, and showers including HOT water... more

This is a Great Product- after printing out the online directions, it went together easily.

The interchangeable breakers are a great feature.

The lines are long enough to hook up in main panel easily, although the manual that comes with device could use some sprucing up. It's poorly printed and the diagram is small and fuzzy.

The price was very reasonable and delivery great

I bought this item to make hooking up a gen set in case of power loss easy. I like most everything about the kit EXCEPT that it only has 10 gauge wire for the power connection. YES, I understand because it is less then a foot of wire it meets code but I don't care. It should have #8 at the min but #6 would be better. I ended up removing the #10 wire and running #6 from the outside plug right to the buss bar for the breakers. No splices and no worries now. It was a tight fit but it is done the... more
