Great Generator
As advertised started on first pull. Easy to turn over unlike some generators. Added front wheels for easy movement by my wife. Even my daughter can start it! Not very loud at all for its size. Love it! It would get a higher rating if it had electric start.

Convenient Portability, Easy Operation, Cleaner Energy Source
I live in a rural area with a history of power outages that can last a few days or more. (A few rural properties on a remote branch of the grid isn't a high priory when nearby towns are also affected.)

I wanted an emergency generator with enough power to run a refrigerator, two freezers and still have enough to operate a few lights and a corded power tool like a circular saw. (Who knows what you'll find yourself needing to do in an emergency.)

I chose propane because it lasts years. (Gas... more

Happy
After fighting with an old gas generator with float problems i bought this LP5500. Just the fact this can sit for years without maintenance makes it worth it right off the bat. The runtime seems to be short. I wonder if there is a Natural gas conversion so i can just hook to the house when needed. Other than that. Hope i don't need it but i'm ready for when i do. Oh... Started in 3 pulls right out of the box. Will be putting lighter weight oil in as well.

Safer Than Gas!
Having gas containers in a residential setting for emergency use is not desirable. Yet most people have propane around for BBQ use and patio heaters. Why not have the emergency generator source the same fuel which is already present.....you agree. I thought so!

So Far, So Good
Received the unit on time. Delivery truck had a lift gate and it was no problem getting the pallet into the garage for assembly. Assembly means putting on the wheels and filling with oil. No problem there!

I purchased a 30# LPG cylinder which balances the unit well making for fairly easy moving. It is heavy, but even my wife can wheel it around. I put in 5W-30 weight oil as we live in N. Michigan and it gets cold here in the winter. The unit started easily after 3 - 4 pulls on a 25 F... more

A Couple Of Small Issues, But Great Otherwise
I got my generator yesterday, it was easy to assemble, I came across 2 issues though, first there is a push button to fold the handle on one side, and holes for a pin on the other, which was not supplied, my thinking was the handle would be best supported by having a pin on that side I found one that fit.

The second issue came when filling the oil from the bottle supplied, and the plastic funnel also supplied, I noticed black specks of something in the oil, the bottle was factory sealed and... more

First Real Use
To update my previous review, we had a tornado and I had to use my LP5500 for real life. I was able to run one deep freeze and two refrigerators no problem and added my aerobic septic system and a few things at a time, and never taxed my unit, which I didn't want to do. I was able to get 6 hours run time from a 20# LP bottle and run an hour and off an hour so I got 12 hours clock time from each bottle at about 85 degrees midday heat. Great unit well pleased plus.

Happy With My Purchase
I set up the Generac LP5500 (Model #6001) in less than one half hour. It took me about five pulls to get it started the first time, which was a bit harder than I anticipated. Several weeks later I was able to start it on the third pull. I guess practice makes perfect.

On my first start-up, I was not getting any output. The owner's manual neglected to state that the red on-off switch (which is pictured as a circuit breaker) must be put into the 'on' position. (Duh!) A simple statement in the... more

Here's Hoping
Two weeks ago we here in NW Washington had a pretty bad blow. Power wasn't restored for up to a week later for some folks. Being a heart patient on blood thinner meds and having no back up heat source, I vowed to never be that cold again. Have done the gasoline generators and the fuel stabilyzer trip. This propane unit arrived today. An hour later it was together and running. Time will tell but at this point I'm impressed.

So Far, So Good...
Easy to assemble and connect. Fired up immediately, and powered our lights and other essentials in a test. Several reviewers have expressed concerns about the lack of an electric start - My husband and I are not that fit, yet the pull start was perfectly manageable for us. We needed exactly the number of pulls (two to prime and then a couple more to start) the manual said. Crazy loud though, as they all apparently are. Two floors away and behind closed doors it wasn't any louder than having... more

First off, I have to say how impressed we are with Electric Generators Direct. I ordered our Generac LP5500 on a Wednesday and it was delivered to our doorstep the following Monday morning!! We had an electrician install a transfer switch so that during a power outage, we can plug the generator directly into our home wiring system. ... more

Great Product - Alternative To Gasoline!
Jim Braugher in Technical Support @ EGD was instrumental in our decision to purchase the Generac LP5500 due to his level of expertise and timeless assistance. The Generac LP5500 (propane model) started right up and has an easy start up with the "Power Dial". The hood can easily be removed for maintenance and it's made in the USA. It also has an hour meter on the front panel and will shut down if oil runs too low.

Generac Lp5500
This unit doesn't start quite as easily as my Briggs and Stratten 5500 watt gasoline generator which starts on the first pull but it is not difficult at all to start. Contrary to some reviews I have read, I did not notice any discernible difference in the exhaust sound between the LP motor and the gas motor. The gas generator has a 7 gallon tank that will run 7 or 8 hours as opposed to 4 or 5 hours on a 20 lb propane tank. I think I'll invest in a 30 lb propane tank for overnight use so I... more

Good Company
I like the Generac company, and the generator seems to be all right. I have two comments since it has only two wheels, it is hard to push on a lawn to get to the hookups and I can say it does not start on the second pull, more like the third or fourth. The assembly was no problem but I was missing one minor bolt which the company agreed to send to me.

Don't Waste Your Money
I was glad I got this generator. Now I pray I will never have to rely on it. Must be used outdoors, got it. Won't work if it is cold outside. WOW! Gotta bring it in to see if it will start, as we have power outages possible tonight, temps near zero. Gotta move it back outside IF it actually starts. Shouldn't store propane inside the house, and generator won't run with cold propane. WONDERFUL! Get a gas-powered one, this is just a waste.

Chris,
Although propane (LP) is a convenient fuel to use because of the availability of 20# and 30# tanks from the hardware store and most people have them for their gas grills it is temperature sensitive.

Most people will not have issues using this fuel; but if you are in a colder climate, it will be harder and the LP must be stored in a warmer environment when not in use.

Manufacturer Response
Brand Rep
Chris,
We are sorry that you are dissatisfied with our storage recommendations for an LP5500 portable generator. Please note that we do not recommend ever starting a generator indoors; for carbon monoxide-related concerns, they should only be run outdoors. Furthermore, we recommend storing the generator and associated LP tank in a warmer environment (if applicable). This is due to the fact that when a smaller propane tank, such as the 20 lb. or 30 lb. cylinder the LP5500 portable generator can hold, is subjected to low temperatures, the propane inside of the tank begins to condense. When the propane condenses, pressure drops, and the flow provided to the generator is thereby limited. With a general lack of fuel, the generator is unable to start and/or run. Considering this, we would recommend keeping the tank as warm as possible, prior to attempting start-up. If you have any additional product-related inquiries, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722).

After considerable due diligence I decided on the propane fuel with 240 volt capability. I have been most concerned about loss of water during extended power outages. I can plug it right into the house (through an appropriate utility isolation box) and it meets all of my other reduced electrical needs as well as the water pump. I ordered the generator knowing it was back ordered. I received it on the day of the projected shipping date. The shipping company that Direct used was top notch with... more

I keep in a attached garage, but the temp has been in low teens later and it is almost impossible to even pull the cord to start it . I think this is because the oil is so thick. I use 10w-30.

Great Product For The Price
I was tired if having to keep fuel switch fuel out because it was going bad. Then as soon as you went to crank the old generator you would have to clean the carburetor because the fuel had gone bad and it will not start. Every year same story. I bought the new propane fuel generator and never have to worry about fuel again. I ran a line from my 500 gallon tank to where I have my outside plug so I just hook up the line and prim pull twice and crank up the generac works easy and every time.... more

Compact Propane Generator
Set this generator up myself in an hour with no problems. The folding handle has only one latch to hold it. Will see if this holds up. Took a couple more than two pulls to get it started but it's new. Ran my well pump then the hot water heater, just not at the same time. No problem. I bought some extra tanks to have on hand since you can keep propane around for quite some time. The biggest selling point for me. So far so good, I really like this generator.

I assembled it without any problems, started on the third pull and ran well, quieter than my gasoline model. I put it under load and it never even noticed the load. So far I'm very happy with it. It is hard to push, easier to pull. I really like the bottle rack and nice snug strap, great design. I hope it performs as well in an emergency, especially starting when the weather is cold...it gets that way in Wyoming! That is usually when the power goes out!

So far so good...the generator came very quickly and was mostly put together. We just had to add oil (included) and add the wheels and front supports.

It started right up. It sounds like a snowblower so it's not super quiet...about what I would have expected though.

It supports 30lb tanks of propane which they claim will get you about 8 hrs on a tank at 50% load. We haven't had to run it for real yet so I have no idea what a normal 20lb tank will get us in terms of run time. But... more

Just What You Need
I live in florida in hurricane alley. I needed a generator that was large enough to run a couple of refrigerators for a couple of days in the aftermath of a storm. This unit will do that job. Out the box this unit is easy to use. The dial on the top is easy to understand. I gave it about three good pulls and she started up just fine. I ran the unit for about 45 minutes running a couple of fans with no problems. It's a little loud, but what do you expect from an engine this size. No storms yet... more

Assembly was quick and easy, and went just as described in the manual. The very next day used this generator to run two large electric jackhammers at a work site. It performed flawlessly. It started right up after two pulls, and never stalled or sputtered. It handled the loads put on it without a hiccup. It seems very well built. I bought this unit as an emergency generator primarily for use as back up during power outages. I wired some dedicated circuits with receptacles located strategically throughout the house. We ended up not needing in this last winter (we live in Massachusetts) but that meant it hadn't been started in over a year. Generac Lp5500
I purchased this with some hesitation but have been greatly pleased. Using LP has its ups and downs but hopefully LP will be available when gas isn't during an emergency if power is down and gas can't be pumped the LP tanks will be available.

I use this frequently and it starts every time. If I follow the start up procedures there is no effort to getting it going. I use it to run my power tools when I am away from the house and during an event that we have it is used to operated air... more

Initial Experience
Shipper was supposed to have a lift gate but did not. Driver helped load it into my car as a 53 foot trailer would be impossible to get to my house. Heavy! Uncrated it and the way it was packaged in the container was excellent. Assembly was quick and easy. Generator looks quality and started up after a few extra pulls and ran fine. Now I hope I never have to use it in an emergency.

Mark,
We do apologize for the lift gate not being available and would be happy to refund you the $50.00 you had to pay. If you have any questions, please let us know. The credit will be put back on your card.

Love My Lp5500 Generator
I love this LP generator, however, I wished you had more models.

I was looking for a higher wattage generator than a 5.5kw generator, but I can make do with this one for a while. I would love to install a whole house gen set, but money is the problem right now.

I bought this generator as there was no reasonably priced propane inverter based 220V generator. I like its design, but my gosh you gotta give it many strong pulls to start.
Pros: Price, Easy To Store, Reliable, I'd Buy It Again
Cons: Heavy, Loud

Hurricane Prepper
I conducted months of research into the various generator sizes, fuel sources, etc. For practical reasons, I decided on a portable generator and propane fuel was the best option for me. The last things to decide was who to purchase it from (and of course their price). I selected Elect Gen Direct and used them as a baseline to compare everyone else (I wasted a lot of time trying to find someone else better). As for the generator, it was easy to unpack, prep and start. The engine is fairly quiet... more

My First Lpg Generator
I used to have a gasoline generator that took a lot of maintenance. Always worried about stale gasoline and dried up gaskets in case I forgot to start it on a regular basis. Always hard to start. Refreshing the gasoline was always a pain.

Well, not anymore. My new generator is the best thing I bought in ages. Easy to operate and low maintenance. Two pulls out of the box started right up. I love it.

The box was a little banged up from the truck but seems to be alright. We have not tested it yet as we are waiting for the electrician for a disconnect box. I truly pray it starts this winter if we need it as we live in Minnesota.

A Fine Propane Generator
We had been looking for a generator for emergency situations and had been frustrated by trying to figure out how to store the gasoline needed to run most of them. Discovered that propane generators were available and after a bunch of research, settled on this one.

It assembled easily (really just the wheels and feet need to be installed), and while the initial starting was a little bit of a challenge, once we got it started, it ran well. We don't have any actual information on it's real... more

Great Value
Service, value, convenient.. I received the generator in 2 working days. Very simple instructions to follow, it was running in 30 minutes. I chose the propane gas over all the competition because of the fact I can store it indefinitely without worrying about the carburetor gelling up. Power Equipment Direct exceeded my expectations
