Generac Gp3250 Portable Generator Review
I've had this unit for 4 years. It ran for well for several years it failed to start under a critical condition. Service was close and easy to find. Stuck valve is what they said. $100 and it works now. I definitely would run fuel treatment through it when storing and turn it off at the valve to drain the carb. I tried to run my RV air-conditioner. Sadly no luck. It did not have the juice to power my RV A/C unit. All in all.... not what I want when the zombies come.
Cons: Heavy, Unreliable

Not The Story You Want To Read
Received the generator in good shape and removed it from the box. Followed instructions to add oil and fuel then tried to start but pull start would not budge.

Called Direct and they told me since oil and fuel had been added they cannot accept the unit back so now I need to take it to a service repair shop under warranty.

I think they need to change the order on instructions to see in motor turns over before adding oil and fuel

Will Not Handle Power Tool Startups
Nicely built generator. Tried to run my skilsaw or miter saw and both would kick the overloads. Only way to start was hit the saw start switch and have wife standing by to reset the overload while saw was still turning. Saw would stay running. Called Generac to see if there was a retro-fit overload available that would momentarily handle starting amperage as several machine tool controls have. Person said to take it to the service center to be checked out. Asked to speak to someone in Generac's... more
Pros: Easy To Use, Easy To Store, Well Constructed
Cons: Need Better Overloads That Will Handle Small Tool Starting Ampera

Jerome,
Please keep in mind that the GP Series is really designed for emergency use.

There is a possibility that the other brand generator has inferior overload protection, which is allowing the higher amp draw.

If you don't think that you're getting the rated watts/surge watts, I would suggest bringing it to a service center to have it looked at.

Brand Rep
Jerome,
We are sorry to learn of the issues that you have experienced with your portable generator. The GP3250 portable generator, model number 5982, features an AC rated output rating of 3,250 watts, and a rated VAC amperage of 27 amps at 120v, and 13.5 amps at 240v. Moreover, the unit comes equipped with a 120/240v, 20A, L14-20R Twist Lock Outlet, and one 120v, 20A, 5-20R Duplex Outlet; both of these receptacles are protected by a 14A, 2-pole circuit breaker. Considering this, we would recommend ensuring that any load you intend on powering with the generator not exceed these particular ratings. If you have been able to confirm that your desired load(s) do not require an output that exceeds those ratings, and the unit continues to experience the same issues, we would then recommend contacting an independent authorized service provider for any diagnostic or servicing work that may have been required. These trained professionals are also capable of providing any applicable warranty coverage to your unit. To locate an independent authorized service provider closest to you, please use your postal code for searching purposes via the following link: http://www.generac.com/dealer-locator?cid=frm-105-ab . We hope you find this information to be helpful, and encourage you to contact us directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722) if you have any additional comments, questions, or concerns.

Do Not Buy This Generator!
Bought this generator and after only its 2nd use (during the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy) it stopped working completely, leaking oil amongst other things. Brought it to local service after horrible experience with Generac customer service, the worst I have ever encountered. If you were able to get someone, they did absolutely nothing to help and did not get back to me as they promised to repeatedly.

The service center looked at the unit and said it was badly damaged internally in several... more

Research Carefully
I bought 2 of these generators in an attempt to keep cost down for 2 familys. Cannot run anything that draws more that 14 Amps. Had calculated running Watts ok for furnace and refrigerator, but due to only having a 14 Amp breaker on the generator cannot power the load from a oil burner motor and starting load of the blower fan. Is too bad that these units dont have a 15 Amp breaker, Who has 14 Amp breakers in a house? Come on Generac really...

Emergency Power!
I recently purchased my Generac GP3250 from EGD. It was easy to assemble the basic items, wheels, handle and the frame foot. It could not of come at a better time because here in the pacific northwest we were hammered by a wicked snowstorm followed by a ice storm in which we went without power for several hours.

Needless to say our Generac went into action and we were able to power up our most basic needs like the pellet stove, refrigerator and TV. In all honesty it is not as quiet as I... more

Storm Saver
We purchased this just before Hurricane Sandy hit and it was one of the best purchases we ever made. We ended up losing power for 6 full days.

The generator is just big enough to run the essentials and small enough to be easy to store, which was an important consideration in my case.

It ran hard right out of the box but we did the proper oil changes so it will be up and ready if and when the next big storm hits. We will be making sure we have a little more gasoline stockpiled for... more

Sandy Made Me Buy It
I live in NJ and ordered this generator the Friday before Hurricane Sandy passed through on a Monday night. It was back ordered with a note that it would be about a week before they could ship. Long story short, it was shipped that Monday, the day of storm, so much quicker than indicated.

The storm delayed things a few days, but I had it up and running one week after ordering it (Friday). It fired right up and I let it run for 24 hours straight. No issues, no problems, and it performed... more

Only Half The Power!!
They split the output between two plugs, you only get half the wattage per plug. 14a max or it will trip the breaker. Don't try anything like an AC unit or power tools. If you want the full 3000 watts for camping or job site buy something else.

Mark,
The GP3250 portable generator, model number 5982, features an AC rated output rating of 3,250 watts, and a rated VAC amperage of 27 amps at 120v, and 13.5 amps at 240v. As you have alluded, the unit comes equipped with a 120/240v, 20A, L14-20R Twist Lock Outlet, along with a 120v, 20A, 5-20R Duplex Outlet. As provided explicitly on the unit's spec sheet and in the product's owner's manual, these outlets are protected by a 14A, 2-pole circuit breaker. Any load(s) that you intend to power with the generator should not exceed these particular ratings. If you require a unit with larger output ratings and/or amperage thresholds, we would recommend considering an alternative generator of a larger size. If you do not know which unit would best fit your needs, please do not hesitate to use our portable sizer via the following link: http://www.generac.com/portable-sizer?cid=frm-105-aa . If you would like to learn more about alternative models that we manufacture, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722).

Learn Here, Buy Here, Then Sit Back & Relax Its On Its Way.
I found myself in a much similar situation as John from freehold, also frustrated, I turned to EGD, I should have gone first. The unit is small its about the size of a typical 2200 watt unit but just a bit heavier the wheels and handle makes for easy navigation from storage, its nice and quiet. This may not run 10 sump pumps but it ran everything I threw at it. To top it off a lot of people bought generators this past hurricane and looking at some of them, and prices they paid compared to my... more

Awesome Generator
During hurricane Irene the power went out in my town and all the surrounding towns. Everyone was in a mad scramble for generators, I was upset that I couldn't find one, but you know the old saying "good things come to those who wait." I went online, did my research on generators instead of buying the first available generator from some over priced store.

I found EGD and ordered the Generac GP3250. I love it, the thing fired up on the first pull and it is super quite. I dont have... more

I Like It.
After our electric was out for eleven hours, and some things in our freezer started to thaw, I restated my need for a generator, which I had done on several occasions. I then purchased the GENERAC GP3250. The delivery was as stated it would be, and the small amount of assembly needed was very easy and straight forward. Once I got the controls set correctly it started on the second pull of the cord. I have not needed to use it yet but expect to have very little or no trouble when the time comes.... more

Great Experience
Generator arrived right on schedule in excellent condition. Driver very helpful unloading etc. Unit started up on 2nd pull. Unit has been wired to my elictrical panel by licensed electrician with interlock switch. All according to code.

I am in the process of building an enclosure to house the generator for the times it will need to operate. My suggestion for PED would be to offer a collapsible enclosure as an option. The odds are that when the generator is needed to operate the odds are... more

Emergency Power
I purchased this generator to use in an emergency primarily to keep my frozen and refrigerated food from spoiling. After talking with one of your tech reps, I am not going to add oil or gas until I need to.

The generator arrived in good shape and was very easy to assemble. It moves easily and I am sure it will be worth its weight in gold when the time comes.
