Q: I am going to install solar panels soon. Is this something I need for this installation or will this only work with portable generator? by Angela from Texas on May 12, 2013
A: The switches we offer are for use with generators only. You should consult with your solar system provider for proper equipment needed.
Q: Can I install an inlet on the front of the 30 amp 10 circuit Reliance Controls 31410CRK transfer kit panel and if so could you recommend one thats sold on this site.
Thanks, Bob by Bob Robbins from Maryland on August 31, 2012
A: It is possible, that is what the blank cover plate space was intended for. A recent code change to the NEC has made this option one that cannot be offered by the manufacturers. This is why you will see more and more of the manual switches packaged or cross sold with the outdoor inlet box.
You may want to explore the 30310A switch and then buy a cord set to the length you then need. We offer cords in 30amp from 10'-100'. If you wanted to connect the cord direct to the switch the power inlet supplied (and part of the cost) would be rendered useless. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: With regards to the 31410CRK with 10 circuit support, (6-15A/120v, 2-20A/240v), can the 2-20A/240v circuits be swapped out for additional 120v support? by Allen from New Jersey on January 24, 2012
A: Each individual side is 120V so with the removal of the silver connecting bar you can have 2 - 120V circuits instead of 1 - 240V circuit.
This process is mentioned in the owner's manual you receive with the switch.
Q: Jim, I have a portable Ridgid generator rated 8,000 watts running to 10,000 watts surge. Can you recommend a transfer switch kit? Many of the kits I saw are rated for 7,500 watts. I am pretty handy, could I install the kit without a licensed electrician? by Bill from New Jersey on January 21, 2012
A: The transfer switch size is based on the size outlet you have on your generator. Typically 8000 running watt generators have a 30A 4-Prong twist lock type outlet (L14-30R) as the largest cord connection.
All 30A connections are rated for a maximum wattage of 7500 watts; inlet boxes, transfer switches, power cords and receptacles.
So, even though your generator is rated so high, you are limited by the outlet size of 30A and you can only get 7500 watts out of your 30A outlet.
The additional wattage is available through the other outlets on the generator.
The only way to get more wattage is to go with a larger generator that offers a 50A outlet that can give you a maximum output of 12,500 watts (max for portable generators).
It is always recommended to have a certified electrician do your manual transfer switch installation. They are familiar with all your local city, county and state codes and it helps for insurance purposes.
Q: I want to put the outdoor plug approximately 25 feet from my panel. Can I still do that with this kit? by Dan from Rhode Island on September 01, 2011
A: The kit will work. However, your electrician will need to add some additional wiring between the power inlet box and transfer switch to make up for the extra length. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Can the 31410CRK handle a 10.5kW surge wattage generator? My generator is 7K Running with a 10.5 peak. by Alan Darby from Mississippi on March 27, 2011
A: The maximum wattage on this switch is 7500 watts as it is rated at 30A. This is also true for the 30A outlet you have on your generator. (30A x 240V = 7200W) The reason manufacturers install this size outlet on your generator is because proper generator sizing should rated at 80% of the generators running capacity so when the larger loads do kick in the unit can handle the surge and still provide proper voltage.
When or if you hit the surge rating on the generator (10.5kW) your voltage output would be much lower then any sensitive electronics can handle which is why it is important to size the unit to 80%.
Q: is this panel NEMA 3 for mounting outdoors? by Jeff Edwards from California on February 26, 2011
A: The transfer switch in this kit is for indoor mounting only. (31310A) The kit comes with a power inlet box (mounted outside) so the cord can be plugged into it and generator running outside allowing the power inlet box to be wired to the transfer switch mounted indoors. This set up is the preferred installation method to help prevent generators from being used indoors and allow the controls inside for ease of use. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: If I need only 1 20 amp 240 circuit can I change the other one to make 2 20 amp circuits ? Can these circuit breakers be replaced? by Gary Ballou from New Hampshire on February 21, 2011
A: Yes, the attachment bar for the 240V circuit can be removed to allow operation of 2 - 120V circuits instead. The internal breakers cannot be switch out though.
Q: Can you run an 8000 watt generator with the model 31410crk transfer switch? by George Cornett from Arkansas on February 04, 2011
A: Yes, this switch is perfect for a 8000 watt generator. When sizing a generator it should be sized to 80% of the generator running capacity so when a large load kicks in the generator has enough flexibility to handle the load without sacrificing the voltage output. This helps keep proper voltage available when these loads kick in and prevents any problems with the equipment being powered. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Hello. What are the main differences between the Q310A and the 31410CRK switches? by Raegen Carr from Florida on January 23, 2011
A: The "Q" Series Reliance Controls transfer switches have interchangeable breakers and their "Pro/Tran" Series do not.
Advantage of interchangeable breakers allows you to adapt the switch to your specific needs. by Jim, Product Expert

Great Product
Let me start by saying this product would be a 5 star except for one SMALL problem. The problem being the size of the letters on the wires. Once I got a magnifying glass and some extra light I was able to pair the red and black wires. The rest of the installation was a breeze up and running in about an hour and a half. Killed the main fired up the generator and the switch worked perfectly.

Disaster
I will start from the beginning. After Sandy in Oct. 2012 I felt it was time to buy a generator of significant and have a transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician. So I went ahead and purchased the B&S 10,000 watt Elite generator and was told it was on back order and won't be available until Dec. 2012. Then in the middle of Dec. I was informed by EGD that it was still in backorder and will be available in Jan. 2013. So no problem, I waited patiently and it was delivered as promised. The generator started on the 1st run and everything was great. So I decided to break it in accordingly as per the manual. Every week or so I would start it and just let it run for 1/2 hr or full hour. So after running it I would put it back in my garage and noticed oil stain on the floor. So I then put a piece of card board to monitor the leak. After about a month of starting I noticed the leak was getting worse.
So I then called B&S and spoke with customer service agent and she explained that I had to send it to a service dealer of B&S to get it serviced and checked out. So I did, the technician in my area explained its probably a gasket cover or it could be the sump ? This was all foreign to me because I felt a new generator should not have these problems. I asked myself doesn't B&S do a quality check on their product before shipping it out ? Anyway the tech told me no need to worry and that's when I started to worry. After 2 weeks of me calling and visiting the tech they could not figure out what was wrong ? He said I'll call you when we find out. So another week goes by and I called him and asked him any luck ? He said good news and bad news. Bad news is you need a new engine, the good news is B&S is shipping me the new engine and I should have it in a week. He explained that this happens sometimes, but he has not seen a problem like this in his 20 yrs as a service tech. So I said lucky me. Why didn't they just give me a new generator ? This is what they do, they fix your problem.
So as of today 3/21 no generator yet and no engine delivered as promised by B&S. Still waiting patiently but I'm not a happy camper. I've been sold a lemon and can't get the satisfaction I deserve and that's a new generator, not a generator that's never been used and now I'm getting a new engine to fix an oil leak ?. It was explained to me that when they do the casting and pour the aluminum in the mold and its off by a millimeter its enough to leak oil. Its all crazy to me. I would not recommend to anyone to purchase a B&S generator. By the way its made in China, that says it all.
The transfer switch I purchased came as promised but the box it was shipped in was torn to shreds When my electrician was installing it he noticed something was wrong. 9 out of the 10 circuits worked, we couldn't figure out why the 10th circuit didn't work. So he said to me you should send this back. I did not want to go through this so I asked him can we open it up and look to see what the inside looks like? So he did and he noticed 1 of the wires was not connected to a terminal inside the box. So he hooked it up and everything worked properly. I'm just glad I told him to open it up before calling EGD and have to return it and go through all of this unnecessary aggravation. So now I have a transfer switch, but no generator. Its been sitting in this shop for 3 weeks now. I hope we do not get any storms in the interim. Good luck to you all. Do your homework before buying. I did and look what happened to me..

Good And Bad Experience - Happy At The End
I ordered in mid-December and got delivery in late January. When an electrician came to make sure that I had everything, he noticed that two switches in the transfer switch were broken - one black button and one red button were laying in the box. So I returned it and they shipped me one in a card box box. The previous receipt was in original colorful box. So, I suspected that they simply put the black and red button on the shaft and sent back. Upon calling they assured me that it was a brand new unit and they simply put it is a brown box. As of today, I still DO NOT believe their story. So, when the electrician finished installing it on March 1, 2013, guess what, one of the previously broken switch (A position) circuit DID NOT work. So, he had to open the main and rewire that circuit to a spare one and that cost me extra money as he had to spent an hour or more to disconnect and reconnect the circuits.
So, I called again and they sent me a replacement breaker for the defective one at the "A" position. This cost me extra as I had to get the electrician back to replace and rewire the transfer switch. So, I am really not happy as at $75 per hour in New York, the defective transfer switch costs me lot more than it should have. If they had sent me a brand new transfer switch then I would not to spent extra dollars which hurts in retirement.

Changing Climate
Over the past several years, I have noticed more frequent storms and related power outages here in New Hampshire. So, I finally gave in and purchased the Briggs and Stratton 30471 (after much research) and the Reliance 10 circut 30 amp transfer switch. Received last week. The R&L Carrier delivery guy was most helpful. I was not too crazy about the $50.00 lift gate charge as an add on but what the heck. The driver wheeled it right into my garage. We noticed a tear in the box and the driver unpacked the generator and inspected it with me. All was okay and I spent about 20 minutes installing the wheels and handle (very easy). Added the oil. Note that you are provided 2 bottles of oil but you will not use all of the second bottle. Just read the oil dip stick until full. Started right up.
I installed the power outlet box outside my garage and ran about 60 feet of 10-3 building wire to the transfer switch which I mounted next to my main breaker panel. I connected everything EXCEPT the transfer switch wires to my main panel breakers. I had my electrician stop by and he did all the final connections in less than an hour. You can save a bundle just by installing the exterior power outlet box, mounting the transfer switch, and building wire yourself. Connecting the building wire to the mounted transfer switch was very easy and fast to do.
Today, 2/24/2013, we were hit with a snow storm and lost power early in the morning for 2 hours. This was my first chance to try everything out. Generator started right up and I was able to run most of our 3500 square foot house with ease. So far, very pleased with this generator and the ease of operation. The only thing I did wrong was to buy the 10 foot power cord. I have since ordered a 25 foot cord to give me 35 feet.

Transfer Switch Kit
I received the transfer kit 1st because the generator I ordered was on back order. surprisingly it came in its own box not wrapped or packed. it looked like it went through the mill. i called up to question the condition and they said that sounds about right , the factory sends it out like that . At first i didn't understand how something being sent through the mail is not packed correctly from the factory with proper packing? so when the generator arrived I made arrangements with my electrician to install the transfer switch. after installing the transfer switch I was excited to test the system and 1 of the circuits did not operate.
After a discussion to convince my electrician to take apart the transfer switch to see if something internally is wrong with the box we noticed where 1 of the wires was not connected to the circuit that did not function and i was very happy to solve this problem. if we did not do this and check the inside of the transfer switch I would have to mail it back for a refund etc. this would of made me very upset. I was glad that my electrician had the patience to take apart the box that was improperly shipped and not being tested first. so that's my story. I feel EGD could of done a better job with shipping the product correctly with the right packing since I paid $20 to ship this product and it was not built correctly from the factory. otherwise it works fine now after being tested and fixed by my electrician.

Relience Power Transfer Kit
As an Electrical Contractor I have been using this panel for portable generator customers for many years. The value of the Reliance power transfer kit saved me approximately $100.
Over purchasing the components separately. A savings which I am able to pass along to my customers. An excellent product and value for the money.

Mounted But Not Wired Up Yet
Waiting on good friend who is a certified electrician to do the wiring into the main panel. This is a quality device without question. The installation instructions are straightforward and I could probably do it myself but opting to have an electrician do it.
This kit comes with everything to complete a transfer switch installation with the exception of an appropriate length of 10/3 +ground cable to connect the exterior power inlet box with the transfer switch. The kit comes with a 10' length of generator cord whch I found too short for my generator location placement.
I ordered a 25' cord from PED which recently arrived. I expect to have the install completed soon. Unless my neighbors have the foresight to purchase their own generators, I could expect to have extra company during the next outage.

Control panel installed in just over one hour by licensed electrician.
Wheel and handles for generator took about ten minutes total. Attaching battery cables OVER ONE HOUR.
Directions are useless AND in order to replace battery holding bracket the battery has to be the OPPOSITE of what is in the direction picture!!!!
Do not think any writer or designer tried to attach the cables!!
Generator did start right up when ready, somewhat quiet.
Company was fine in updating delay notices .
Price was best around for this machine.

10-circuit Transfer Switch Install In Oh
Having endured a prolonged power outage from the June 29, 2012 derecho (downed trees and power lines, the whole nine yards), I was determined to install your transfer switch which I had read about earlier on the web, to avoid the stringing of multiple extension cords from the outdoor portable generator bought earlier.
The kit, which was on back-order, arrived earlier than scheduled (a good thing). The component quality is excellent, and the written instructions and installation DVD provided complete details and some handy installation hints. All that was needed was the connecting wiring between the outdoor inlet plug and the transfer switch panel (which is understandable considering the wide variations in installations). Installed the kit without a hitch and and pleased with the outcome. My only suggestion would be to make the wiring markings between the "H" and "I" more clear (beside the difference in orientation).

Powering Up
After two storms last winter and having to drag cords all over the house, I invested in a transfer switch that requires only a cord from my generator to the outside wall plug and the house is back ready to go.
That went so well that I bought a second unit and had it installed at my brother's house. We are both happy that it worked out so well.
Thanks for the great service.

Best Purchase We've Ever Made
We purchased this generator from PED after Hurricane Irene last year and had the transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician.
Our power went out this year as soon as Sandy started blowing in. The generator started on the first turn of the key in the ignition, and ran 290.6 hours straight 24/7 without a hiccup through both the hurricane and the nor'easter a week later.
It burned a surprisingly small amount of oil (Royal Purple Synthetic) and ran about 12 hours on a tank. I can't imagine what we would have done without it for the 12 days we had no utilities. It paid for itself several times over on this one storm alone.
Finding a hotel out of state, boarding all our pets, and dealing with frozen pipes were all a non-issue. I can't say enough good things about this generator (and the 10 circuit Reliance transfer switch). Just make sure you install the transfer switch - it powered the whole house (including a 72" 3d TV) without any strain.
The service from PED was exceptional, as was their picking and delivery. I've used them several times over the past 2 years and not a single bad thing to say.
All-in-all a major disaster made livable.

You Can Diy
After two $1,400 quotes to install a $400 10-circuit transfer switch, I decided to tackle the job myself. Most of the work involved A) mapping my service box so I could decide which 10 switches were the most important to back up (electricians seldom label the work they've done, and when they do it's usually with something helpful like "lights") and B) mounting the exterior inlet box, which involved purchasing 10-gauge Romex and punching a 1" hole through to the exterior.
Once all this was done and I had everything planned out, I cut the power and had the connections completed in about an hour. It's a good idea to have a second pair of eyes on the job as you make the connections. The DVD explains how to do it right. And, the kit includes everything you'll need except the Romex connecting the transfer switch to the inlet box.
Regarding safety, if your only option is to throw off the main breaker, keep in mind that the lugs at the top of the box are still hot. I was fortunate to have a cutoff switch upstream of the main circuit box, so I wasn't doing any work near live lugs. As a precaution, I did purchase a non-contact current detector at a big box store for $20 just to make sure the entire box was cold. If this is not your option, stretch some caution tape across the live lugs as a reminder to keep clear of them.
This is a great kit and saved me $1,000!
EGD RESPONDS: We just want to remind folks that some insurance companies and zoning boards require changes to your breaker box be certified by a registered electrician. Please be sure to check with your insurance agent & local codes.

I was thrilled to find this product for a substantially better price at PED. The website has all the necessary information and the purchase transaction was completely painless and easy. I was even more pleased when the package arrived on my doorstep a day early.
Trouble started once I opened the package to install the product. In getting familiar with the individual transfer switches, I immediately noticed the bottom two ganged switches were not functioning properly. No firm click into either of the three positions, Line-Off-Gen for both of the ganged two pole switches (for the 220 VAC devices). This installation was for my camp which is rather remote so it is a major nuisance when projects are interrupted with product issues.
Long story short, I disassembled the individual switches to find the switching mechanism (spring loaded rocker mechanism) to be assembled improperly as compared to the properly functioning ones. With some careful consideration of how they worked, I was able to put the 4 bad switches (plus the one good one) back together properly and they seem to be functioning.
An additional concern was that the wire bundling behind the switches toward the bottom was not optimal putting a LOT of stress on the bottom switches even to the extent the retaining features of the lower switches had trouble staying anchored in the front panel. This might have been the root cause of the original switch problem.
I completed the installation to avoid the hassle and costly delays associated with returning the product and making another trip north.
Seems to be functioning properly although there is some lingering concern over long term reliability and performance.
Bottom line: Great company to deal with, product had everything needed for proper installation, poor quality control from the manufacturer.
EGD RESPONDS: We apologize for the inconvenience, and will pass along your comments to our contact at Reliance.
We need to remind folks that the Manufacturer's Warranty will cover materials & workmanship, but will not cover a unit once it's been worked on by someone else.

Good Customer Service From Reliance
I had an electrician install the transfer panel in my Northern Virginia home about 3 1/2 years ago. We live in a heavily wooded area and storms tend to bring the trees and power lines down 2 - 3 times a year.
Over the Fourth of July we were without street power for 5 days with temperatures near 100 degrees. The transfer panel has worked great. Paired with an 8,000 watt generator, I have enough power for 2 refrigerators, the well pump, the tankless water heater, lights throughout the house and key outlets in the kitchen (microwave and the essential coffee maker!).
In the winter the set-up powers the blower for the gas furnace and the fireplace insert. In the summer I can run 2 window A/C units.
During the last outage I noticed that neither watt meter was working. I contacted Reliance and they sent me 2 replacement meters under warranty right away. Great service from Reliance, considering the age of the panel. I didn't expect to get them for free.
My only wish is that the panel had 2 more circuits. 10 seems to be the max for any 30 amp system. I have lift pumps on my septic system and made a tough choice to leave them off the panel. Talking to the county, I have enough head room in the tank to go about 5 days without pumping at normal water usage rates, which was proven to be true in the last outage.

Easy Install Great Customer Service
The Reliance Controls 10 Circuit Transfer switch was very easy to install. Reliance Website has detailed videos to watch so you can see the entire process before you start. I am not powering any 240v circuits so I took the connecting bar off the two 20 amp double pole switches. Also I only need two, 20 amp circuits. I called Reliance and asked about replacing the two other 20 amp breakers with 15 amp breakers as not to over power my house circuits rated at 15 Amps. They 2nd day FedEx'd me 2 - 15 Amp breakers and the black collars for free. (20 Amps have Red collars). They replace super easy and took only about 5 minutes to swap out. The Watt meters on the switch help ensure I have balanced loads and are handy and help with peace of mind. I used the THP103 AmWatt load tester to help plan out my circuit distribution. It's pretty slick.
I have used the transfer switch a couple of times since I installed it a year ago and it works like a champ. I did end up buying the optional clear cover which I thought was a little pricey but it does a good job of keeping the transfer switches and Circuit Breakers clean/dust free. I would Highly recommend this transfer switch.

First Portable Generator
After living through several hurricane close calls over the past 5 years in Florida, I finally decided to order a generator. I read through most of the reviews on EGD and settled on the B&S 30470. The generator was delivered in a few days as scheduled, along with the transfer switch kit.
Like most of the reviews it took about a half hour to get the wheels on, and I fired up the generator right away. Very glad we ordered the electric option. Had an electrician come to set up the transfer switch. Plugged in the generator for a trial run, and it powered everything that was connected. I was impressed how much we are able to run with the 7,000 watts.
Very happy with the entire process, including the several calls to customer service for a few follow up questions. They were great to deal with.

This Works Great!
We had a 4 day black out around Halloween in the N.Y. area. Bought the Briggs & Stratton 30471,Reliance Control 31410CRK transfer kit, KF10 Flush mount,CK10 Hinge Cover. It was 3 months for all the parts to come in BUT Electric Generators Direct absolutely had the best price AND NOBODY had any of the parts in stock any where period! I had a electrician come & put the parts in & wow it all worked incredibly well. I had (as a test) every circuit we wired on & it ran like a gem. I am very happy the way this whole thing went. Happy customer & Electric Generators Direct is the real deal. My electrician was very neat & complete a real pro!

Ran For Over 4 Days Without A Hitch
After dealing with no power for five days after the hurricane this September, I decided never again and went online and bought this generator and a power transfer switch. When the freak snow storm hit at the end of October I was prepared and kept my family nice and warm watching tv and living like nothing happened. This puppy was able to power my boiler, water heater two freezers, a refrigerator, computers and tvs and anything i wanted to use with no issues. It was like I never lost power at all.
By the time we got power restored, this thing ran for 108 hours straight. When I finally disconnected it, I simply changed the oil gave it a look over and put it away. I've taken it out once just to run it so the seals keep lubricated. The transfer switch made life simple too, no extension cords running throughout the house, just a simple click of a switch and i use my existing outlets. This combo is a sure winner...

Perfect Transfer Switch
As others have stated, the installation of this unit is very straightforward. If you have ever installed a light or changed a plug you can install this. In fact my wife was helping me install this unit when and after seeing me connect the first circuit she asked if she could try and then proceeded to take over and wire the rest of the unit!
While the actual wiring is very well documented (watch the videos), it did take me a few hours to complete my install. I wanted to make for a very neat installation in my finished garage and have a 40'+ run of 10/3 wire in conduit to my outside connection box.
Highly recommend this switch!

The 10 circuits are perfect for the 8000 Watt Generac Generator that I'll be using.
Reliance Controls, 31410CRK, is a very good transfer switch.
I particularly liked the wattage meter that shows you the load on each side of the switch.
You can and should load balance the watts and the meter shows you the load as your generator is running and as you continue to turn on different appliances.
I was amazed that I could run my furnace, sump pump, Fridge, 2 home offices with 2 computers each, and a plasma TV and several lights. I noticed that the microwave and toaster oven consume a big amount and it would be smart to run these one at a time so you don't overload one side of the switch.
I'm going to give the Generac 8000 watt 4 stars and not 5 stars for one reason only. They should have provided a trickle charger so you don't have to remember to charge the battery once a month. The batter does not charge when it runs...FYI..
The Generac is a good generator and does a nice job. I didn't see any issues as I worked on my computers.
Thanks for a smooth order process and quick shipping EGD! I would recommend to a friend.

The Finished Job!
I put this switch in a month ago & tested it out. I actually lost power when this freak October 29 noreaster hit and it worked with no problems. I was able to use all the circuits I wired to it and I could choose to turn off some as needed. I can configure the box for summer (air condition, pool, etc) or winter ( no air conditioner, pool) and use those circuits for other needed uses. I took a picture of both the panel and the transfer box (printed them both and placed by the panel) and labeled them so anyone can turn onoff any switch with confidence.

So for so good, this transfer kit comes with all you need except a connector if needed. EZ instructions and ez to read. I have it all set up now but still waiting for the generator that has been back ordered, I will let you know how all goes when I fire it all up. By the way the price on this kit is the best you will ever find. I am retired and had plenty of time to research prices and this place did it for me.

So far everything is good. Installed the transfer switch with no problems. I have done a good deal of electrical work so it was fairly simple to install. The generator is a little noisier than I expected but we will adjust.
I cannot say enough good things about R&L Carriers. I was unable to be home on the delivery date so I went to pick it up at their location. Unfortunately, there was some confusion on the arrival date. I received a call from a manager apologizing for "their" mistake and offered to make it a priority to have it delivered as soon as it arrived.
I told him that I would not be home and would pickup at the terminal. When I arrived at the terminal these people jumped through hoops to get my generator and loaded it on my truck. Along with apologizes for the delay. Great people. The dock worked would not even accept a tip.
Overall the whole purchase has been really good. Kudos!

This kit is a must-have for installing any portable generator the right way. I only had to add the 10-3 wire from the inlet plug to the switch. The product is of high quality. Installation was very straight forward with all the wires pre-labeled. Ordering was easy and I received several status e-mails. Electric Generators Direct shipped my order quickly.

I Did It!
I know nothing about electricity. But, i watched the how to video, followed it step by step and BAM up and running in about 3 hours. My wife was shocked. I have a 8500 titan generator and can run everything I need with no problem. I am an over the road trucker and now I am confident my wife can handle a power outage when I am away from home. I am very satisfied with this power transfer kit......

More Bang For The Buck
I tend to be very skeptical about making online purchases. I chose to research online but purchased via the phone. I had plenty of questions for the customer service person I who took my order. She was very patient with me and knowledgeable. When I asked questions she could not answer she investigated and called me back with the answers.
Delivery was timely. All of my accessories shipped separate from the generator and arrived very quickly. The initial shipping date for the generator was also very fast however, it was to the trucking company not my home. The delivery to my home took another couple of days, still the total time was minimal but the confusion caused me to waste an extra day waiting at home for the delivery. On delivery day the generator was wheeled right into my garage for me.
The minimal assembly of the generator was a snap and took no time at all. The electrician found the transfer box easy to work with and was able to install it without any problems. The flexibility of the extra circuits was well worth it. I initially looked at the 6 circuit box and was having a difficult time choosing the most important breakers to back up. With the 10 circuits I was able to back up all of the most important breakers as well as a few that would allow for some comfort items like extra lighting for safety, internet and TV.
The Honeywell generator I chose was comperable in price to other 5000W generators but had the power output closer to the 7000W generators. I must admit that do fear that it sounds to good to be true, but only time will tell.
To test my system for the first time I switched off the main breaker then had my 8 year old son move the generator from it's storage location in the garage outside, start it with the electric start, plug the 30 amp cord into the outlet in the garage, and switch the transfer box breakers. He was able to do everything with minimal input from his two sisters, it was that easy! We then turned on everything that we could possibly turn on in the house. The generator never even flinched, with everything on it was running just under 1/2 of it's capability. My 12 year old daughter later started the generator using the pull start. This was not as easy a task but she was confident she could get it done if needed.
So far I am very pleased with our purchases. I am confident we would suffer minimal inconveniences if we lost power for a prolonged period, but hope to never have to find out. I plan on using the generator for several projects in the near future and am anticipating that it will perform just as well.
With this combination of products, I was able to get much more flexibility and power for a minimal increase in cost. The system is so easy to use that an 8 year old can get the power up and running in less than 10 minutes. I'm now much more relaxed when I'm at work and my family is home during bad weather.

Perfect
Both products are perfect. The generator started after 2 pulls. Tested the connections and worked great. The switch kit was easy to install if you're a little handy.
I was anxious to use it a couple of times this season but fortunately we didn't lose power.
I would recommend both the company and the products.

New Generator
Received Reliance transfer switch in good condition, also Briggs & Stratton generator arrived in good shape no damage.
Hats off to R & L Carriers who delivered the generator the driver put it right in my garage I didn't have to handle it at all, took just about 30 minutes to un-box and assemble, put in oil & gas and away it went.
Transfer switch was easy to install instructions easy to follow had no problems at all. Very satisfied with purchase and dealing with EDG.

Everything To Do The Job Properly
I had been thinking of back-feeding the panel but decided to do it right. This system gave me everything to do the job properly.
The hardest part of the installation was to decide which circuits to use and to distribute the load. The switch gave me ten 120 volt circuits to play with, which was more than enough to cover most of my home.
I decided not to include the electric stove and ovens in the kitchen as they would have tied up too many circuits. I did include the microwave, toaster oven and coffee pot so I really won't be roughing it!
Installation was not difficult for anyone who can replace an outlet or light switch. The only thing I had to purchase was some 10-3 building wire to go from the inlet box to the switch.
Instructions were clear and easy to follow. The system worked perfectly when I tested it for over an hour with my 6500/7000 watt generator.
I didn't even have to re-set the clocks in the house when switching from line to generator and back!
EGD RESPONDS: Please check your local code and insurance; some communities require installation be performed, or certified, by a licensed electrician.

This is a nice product with quality components. Installation was fairly easy. I had one circuit that would not transfer to generator power and when I called Reliance customer support, they quickly sent me a new circuit breaker - very good service!
When I took off the panel to install the new breaker, I discover a disconnected spade connector so it was never a serious problem.
My only minor disappointment was that you need to cut off (destroy) the L14-30 plug in order to install the supplied L14-20 plug. I was hoping to have the option of switching between them as needed.

Two Thumbs Up
The transfer switch arrived in two days as scheduled. The switch is very heavy duty and well constructed.
One of the 15 amp circuit breakers was cracked where it came through the panel but was still OK to install. One call to Reliance Controls and a replacement breaker is on its way.
The panel took a skilled electrician about 6 hours to install. This included routing 60 foot of 10-3 wire to the outside panel connector.
My 5000 watt Husky generator with the 10 circuit transfer switch powers all my critical circuits and almost all the rest of the house.
Two thumbs up- it's a very good heavy duty switch. I am an electrical engineer and I highly recommend this, and Electric Generators Direct, for an economical manual transfer switch solution.

I purchased this generator for emergency residential use. I connect it through a 30 amp 10 circuit Reliance manual transfer switch.
The generator powers almost all of my 3000 sq. ft. house except for the AC, ovens and dryer. I used it once for 10 straight days and it ran flawlessly.
Typically I would fill the gas tank up in the morning when I woke up and at night before we went to sleep, so I probably averaged 12 hour actual run times.
I have recommended this combination of transfer switch and generator to many others as it is hard to beat the functionality for the money- which is roughly $2,000 installed (generator, transfer switch and electrician).

Nice Quality Transfer Switch
I was looking for a reasonably priced transfer switch to go along with the generator we recently purchased.
Electric Generators Direct shipped the transfer switch quickly and I was impressed with the quality of the switch and the components when they arrived.
I installed this switch to the breaker panel in about an hour and a half and found the instructions to be very straight forward. This was a very easy install, and I have not worked on a main panel before (even though I am very handy).
It took me longer to run the 10-3 wire to the outlet by my back porch than it did to install this transfer switch.
I am a very happy with my purchase.
