  1 Question
Q: Jim, I recently purchased this house with a Transfer switch for the emergency generator rated at 5000W. Can I use a higher rated portable Generator? Most 5000kw show a surge of up to 6000 on some. Would any surge above 5000 trip the breaker at the transfer switch? I do want bare minimum to get by in case of power outage. Its wired for the well pump, refrigerator, one kitchen plug in, one outlet for freezer and one outlet for bedroom. I have found some good buys on 5500W Gens, but this may be too much for my transfer switch?
by Mike from Georgia on January 05, 2013

A: This will depend on the amperage rating of the transfer switch.

If you have a 30A rated transfer switch you can go up to 7500 watts.

If you have a 20A rated transfer switch you can go up to 4800 watts.

(Ohms Law - Amps x Volts = Watts)

The size of the generator really does not matter due to Ohms Law. Most generators rated from 5000 up to 8000 watts have a 30A outlet as their largest outlet to connect to a transfer switch. This allows a maximum wattage capacity output of 7500 watts.

The rule of thumb when sizing a generator is to size it to 80% of its running capacity so the unit has the flexibility to handle starting loads with ease. If a generator has to jump into its surge capacity the output voltage will drop 30% due to the strain on the alternator to produce this starting current. This is why the rule of thumb is based on the running load and not the starting load.

Anything connected to the generator that is sensitive electronics can be damaged if the generator goes into its surge load. A surge load is typically used for motor load starting such as a well pump, refrigerator compressor motor or sump pump.

From The Manufacturer
This 5000 watt generator is powered by a Subaru EX30 engine with auto engine shut off for low oil. It has a 8 gallon metal fuel tank with an easy to read gauge. The generator gets 14.4 hours of run time at 50% load.

The 10 inch flat free wheels make the unit easy to transport. The AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) keeps equipment protected from voltage surges.

There are two 5-20R 20 Amp Duplexes & a L14-30R 20 Amp Twistlock on this model. A two foot 20 amp cord and oil are... more

No Problems
I received the generator from the freight company with no damage. The unit required installation of the wheels and handles, and that was fairly easy. It has two handles, like a wheelbarrow, not one as pictured. Once I put the supplied oil and some gas in, the generator started on the first pull.
Now I just need to wait for the next power failure to see how well it works for me.

If the generator is going to sit for a while, you will want to add some fuel stabilizer to the gas in the tank.
