Kohler 18RES-L - 18 kW Emergency Power System

After most recent power outage, my wife mentioned that she was going to take some of the insurance money and buy a generator set with automatic switch over when I died. First purchase!

After a couple of days it occurred to me that perhaps I should do this project while I was alive and enjoy it too (net cost being the same).

I went on line and found www.electricgeneratorsdirect.com. I used their tools to select a size. I really am picky about engines and have had good experience with Kohler on farm equipment.

I placed the order, trucking company delivered it in perfect condition. Driver was most helpful with the unload from the requested lift truck.

I set the blocks for leveling, ran the black pipe propane line, converted the unit to propane (takes 2 minutes), fired it up in manual mode. Runs perfectly.

Unit makes far less noise that the Gas Pack right next to it. I am now waiting for the electrician to wire the automatic transfer switch (included). With hurricanes Danielle and Frank already in the Atlantic, and Invest97 coming at us from Cape Verde Islands, I may end up doing the switch myself!

No hitches with the project, the unit appears to be first rate construction. Now if only my friend the electrician would get here ...

I live in Southeastern, California. After a 7.2 magnitude Earthquake, my home went without power for 29 hours before service resumed.

Some folks were out for several days with temps in the 90's. So I thought this is not going to happen again- at least not to me.

Got the 18res-l. Went with Propane because Natural Gas delivery is not a sure thing after an Earthquake.

I had a 250 gallon tank installed and filled. With fuel line and regulator and first fill up the price was about $1,000.

I brought in an electrical contractor for an additional $1000.00 including all connectors, pipe and fittings and got the system wired up. (note) Use a small Electrical Business or get the run around...

System runs great and powers up my 5 ton AC and whatever else I want to use, and only pulls 45 amps. That is just about a 50 percent load and the generator doesn't miss a beat.

I am totally satisfied with this system thus far.

Total cost from start to finish was $7,185.00; but hey, it is worth it because my family will be comfortable in the event of another event!
