Q: What is the difference between the Honda EB, EM and EU generators?

by Thomas W Murphy from Wisconsin on June 26, 2014

A: Thanks for your inquiry.

The Honda EU series is considered the "Super Quiet" series and range from 1,000 watts to 7,000 watts. These units are totally enclosed and primarily used for recreational purposes.

The Honda EB series are considered "Industrial" and range from 3,000 watts to 10,000 watts. These units have Full GFCI protected outlets to meet OSHA standards on jobsites.

The Honda EM series are considered the "Deluxe" series and range in 4,000 watts to 6,500 watts. These units have electric start and are primarily used for home backup.

Q: What's the difference between a EU2000IKC Companion and the regular EU2000i?
by James Erickson from Utah on May 06, 2014

A: Thanks for your inquiry.

Certain Honda generators have the ability to be paralleled together like the EU2000 generators. The standard EU2000iS has a one duplex outlet and in order to parallel this unit you will need the EU2000i Companion model which will have the 30-amp outlet in order to get the power from both units.

Below is a link to the Parallel Kit which has a video that explains the connections.

Q: Can I use the Honda EU2000i to provide temporary portable power to my home refrigerator or freezer in an emergency or power some lights? If not is there a portable generator that can?

Thanks

by Howard T from West Virginia on January 11, 2014

A: Thanks for your inquiry.

Generator sizing is based on the starting amperage of the equipment you plan on powering which will determine the size generator needed.

Proper sizing of the generator is based on 80% of the generators running capacity, so when a large load kicks in the unit has enough flexibility to handle it and still provide clean voltage output.

To calculate the wattage, the following formula will help convert starting amps to watts - Starting Amps x Volts = Watts

In order to know if this unit will be large enough you would have to have the starting amps of the refrigerator and use the formula to determine the wattage at startup.

Q: Can you run non oxygenated fuel in a Honda EU2000iS generator?
by Jim G from Minnesota on January 08, 2014

A: Thanks for your inquiry.

Below is a link to the Owner's Manual and on page 45 they have the fuel recommendations.

Q: Mike,
We're trying to keep our duck hunting holes from icing up. Is there a way to use a larger capacity gas tank with the Honda EU2000i so our ice heater runs all night?

by Tony from Missouri on January 06, 2014

A: Thanks for your inquiry.

All of the portable generators we offer are air cooled and requires them to be shutdown to refuel and to check/add oil. The manufacturers do not recommend any extended fuel tanks for their generators for this reason and installing one would void the warranty.

Q: I was interested in buying the Generac GP17500E. I did my homework and believe it is the one for me. The questions I have are:

1. Can I convert it to propane?

2. How long will a 15lb propane tank last on this generator if I'm not powering the whole house and just the bare necessities?

Thank you Ryan

by Ryan from New York on October 16, 2013

A: Thanks for your inquiry.

We at Power Equipment Direct do not recommend converting your gasoline portable generator to an alternative fuel and doing so will void the manufacturer’s warranty and may cause damage to the generator itself. These conversions are not recommended by any of the generator manufacturers.

Gasoline has an Ignition Point of 475–536 °F. When a generator is manufactured to run solely on gasoline these temperatures are taken into consideration and the engine components are made to handle these temperatures.

Propane (LP) has an Ignition Point of 920-1020°F and Natural Gas (NG) has an Ignition Point of 900–1500°F. These higher temperatures will cause damage over time on any “gas only” powered engine.

The following guidelines cover Honda engines (Also applies to other engine manufacturers) modified to run on fuels other than the one for which they were designed, such as converting an engine to run on propane (LP) or natural gas (NG).

• Honda gasoline engines are certified to operate on unleaded fuel with a pump octane rating of 86 or higher, containing no more than 10% ethanol (E10).

• Any change to the original configuration of a certified Honda engine is a potential violation of the Clean Air Act prohibition against tampering (40 CFR §1068.101(b)(1)). The tampering prohibition is important because poorly designed and installed modifications can increase emissions.

• The Clean Air Act prohibits anyone from removing or rendering inoperative any device or design element installed on engines in compliance with regulations. These actions are considered tampering, which carries a civil penalty up to $37,500 for each engine or equipment in violation.

• Engines converted by a third party (OEM, dealer, converter, etc.) to run on a different fuel type must be recertified with the EPA on the new fuel to comply with applicable emission standards. The third party must recertify under a new family and notify Honda to not include the modified engines in the original family.

• Converted engines to be sold for use in California must meet CARB requirements and the converter must obtain approval from CARB. EPA certificates or tampering exemptions will not satisfy the requirement for CARB certification.

• Once certified, the third party must remove the Honda emission control label and apply a compliant emission control label for the new fuel indicating the new certifying manufacturer. Honda will no longer assume any responsibility as the certifying manufacturer.

• The Honda Distributor's Limited Warranty does not extend to parts affected or damaged by the conversion to or use of fuel other than the fuel for which the engine was originally designed.

• Honda offers V-twin engines specifically designed and certified for use in LP/NG applications. The engines incorporate special design features that address the higher combustion temperatures and reduced lubrication to the valve guide area (since it is a dry fuel, not liquid). Please contact your sales representative or distributor for additional information.

Disclaimer: The guidance provided is intended for Honda dealer/distributor informational purposes only and not for the purpose of providing legal advice. You must contact the appropriate certifying agencies if you require information on how regulations apply to your specific application.

The regulations and additional information can be found at these web sites:

The run times will always vary based on the actual load put on the generator.

Q: My wife and I are planning on spending the winter in our camper. We have on board batteries that would need re- charging to run the heater and a couple of interior lights. My question is would the 1000 do this or would I need a 2000. Plus would I have to run the generator all the time or just part of the time.Thank you.
by Kim Postma from Michigan on September 29, 2013

A: Thank you for your interest in Electric Generators Direct!

The Honda EU2000IA1 is equipped with an 8 amp, 12 volt DC battery charging connection. This will allow the generator to provide an ample charge to your 12 volt automotive style batteries. The generator will need to be operating in order for the connected batteries to receive the charging current.

Both the Honda EU2000 and the EU1000 are equipped with this feature and provide the same charge rate. You will most likely not be able to power anything other than the batteries when using the EU1000 while the EU2000 could provide charging capabilities with some power to spare.

Q: Do these Honda Generators have a Forest Service approved spark arrestor?
by Jack Cover from Colorado on May 23, 2013

A: Thank you for your interest in Electric Generators Direct!

The Honda EU2000IA1 does feature a USDA approved spark arrestor. This has been approved for use within state and national parks.

Q: I need to run 2 wet vacs: one vac is 7.5 amps and the other is 8 amps. Also I want to run a steamer. To heat up it takes 1500 watts and once it's heated it uses 800 watts. I thinking of getting 2 for my mobile detail business would this work? Sometimes I need to run a buffer and a vac. Again the vac is 7.5 amps and the buffer is 4.5 amps.
by Paul Viens from Florida on May 11, 2013

A: The running amps for the vac and buffer would be as you list but typically the starting amps is much higher (3-5 times).

The one way to verify is to use an amp meter to get the starting amps and then by using Ohms Law you can convert that to watts....

Starting Amps x Volts = Watts

I would assume you will need a much larger generator to power your equipment especially if you intend on running more then one at one time.

Q: How long will the item run on 1 gallon of gas ?

Also can i use an adapter to go from my 220v Gen-tran switch to the 120v on the generator?

by Steve Bonoli from Massachusetts on February 11, 2013

A: The Honda EU2000I is rated to run for 9.6 hours on the 1.1 gallon fuel supply. This is while taking advantage of the eco-throttle feature.

Unfortunately there is not an adapter that will convert from your 220v switch to this 120v connection. The only high voltage connections with this product line are available when using the companion unit in parallel.

Q: What is a inverter generator?
by Francine Breland from New Jersey on December 28, 2012

A: An inverter generator is a power generator that can process raw power into a power feed similar to the power received through power lines. The generator part of an inverter generator is usually powered by gasoline or diesel fuel. "Inverter" means that the power is converted from direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC).

Typically inverter generators are much smaller then standard open frame style generators and tend to operate at very low noise levels. This makes them perfect for tailgating or camping and in some cases able to power one or two items in your home in an emergency.

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: What oil is used in this generator?
by Kevin from Texas on July 31, 2012

A: SAE 10W-30 oil is recommended for general use; for additional recommendations, see page 49 of the owner's manual.

Add enough SAE 10W-30 API service category SJ or later (or equivalent) oil to bring the oil level to the upper limit of the oil filler neck.

Q: Jim When you have the EU 2000I and the companion .... Do you connect the Parallel cables up first ... Then Start both units... Then connect the 30 amp... RV 120 cable.... Sounds right to you?.. Any other way in my opinion is dangerous and not right... What do you say??
by Frank from New Mexico on May 16, 2012

A: 1. Connect the parallel operation cable between the EU2000i Companion to either an EU2000i or another EU2000i Companion generator following the instructions supplied with the cable kit.

2. Start the engines and make sure the output indicator (green) on each generator comes on.

3. Plug an appliance into the 30A twist lock receptacle.

4. Turn on the appliance.

**If the generators are overloaded, or if there is a short circuit in a connected appliance, the overload indicator (red) will go ON. The overload indicator (red) will stay ON, and after about four seconds, current to the connected appliance(s) will shut off, and the output indicator (green) will go OFF. Stop both engines and investigate the problem.

Determine if the cause is a short circuit in a connected appliance or an overload. Correct the problem and restart the generator.

Follow the instructions included with the parallel operation cable kit. Before connecting an appliance or power cord to the generator:

Make sure that it is in good working order. A faulty appliance or power cord can create a potential for electrical shock.

If an appliance begins to operate abnormally, becomes sluggish, or stops suddenly, turn it off immediately. Disconnect the appliance, and determine whether the problem is the appliance or the rated load capacity of the generator has been exceeded.

Make sure that the combined electrical rating of the tools or appliances do not exceed that of the generator. Never exceed the maximum power rating of the generator. Power levels between rated and maximum may be used for no more than 30 minutes.

Never connect different generator models.

For parallel operation, use only a Honda approved parallel operation
cable kit (optional equipment) when connecting one EU2000i Companion to either an EU2000i or another EU2000i Companion generator.

Never connect different generator models.

For parallel operation, use only a Honda approved parallel operation cable kit (optional equipment, see page ) when connecting one EU2000i Companion to either an EU2000i or another EU2000i Companion generator.

Never connect or remove the parallel operation cable when the generator is running.

For single generator operation, the parallel operation cable must be removed.

***Substantial overloading that continuously lights the overload indicator (red) may damage the generator. Marginal overloading that temporarily lights the overload indicator (red) may shorten the service life of the generator.

Honda Does Not Dissapoint
I purchased the EU 2000i generator to take to my property in the mountains and keep my motor home charged as well as run some power tools in the future to build an outhouse and then a cabin. I am very pleased with the light weight but sturdiness of the generator. It started up like a charm, it is quiet which is important for my environment and it does run a long time on one gallon of gas...6-8 hours, depending on where the throttle is set.

A big plus is the ability to add a companion... more

Unexpected Low Current Output
While the DC output is exactly "as advertised" within the specs, it is not sufficient to serve as a reliable battery recharger for a boat's DC battery bank. At a maximum of 8 Amps it takes 18 hours running nonstop to replenish one day's normal energy consumption of 150 Ah when were cruising. With refrigeration running (5 amps/hr) the time is even longer as the net gain is only 3 amps.hr.

So I tried to use the AC output through the boat's shore power circuit but the high current... more

Dirk,
We're sorry it didn't meet your needs right out of the box. You may be able to accomplish by having an AC powered charged installed and you'll be able to use the 120V outlets on the generator, that produce more charging power than the DC outlet.

I received my generator very quickly. I put gas and oil in right out of the box and the second pull on the cord and it fired up and has been running flawlessly ever since. I run a small camper with it and it runs everything including the 8000 BTU A/C unit without overloading the generator.

Sadly Mine Was A Lemon
Bought Honda because most everyone has nothing but good things to say about them. But sadly I was the 1 out of 1000 that got the problem machine. Tough time on start right out of the box should have been an omen. Really tough first start. After 40 pulls, resorted to starting fluid after determining that the carb had fuel. Fired right up on starting fluid so I knew there were carb problems. Ran it for 15 minutes on a weekly basis to keep fuel rotated and to prevent gum and varnish formation.... more
