Q: When the generator runs on the time you set once a week, does it actually transfer power to your house or does it just run with out transferring power? by R. SMITH from Louisiana on February 10, 2011
A: The unit is just going to exercise without load. This would not transfer any power to the house on the exercise cycle. by Jim, Product Expert

Jim's Recommendation
The Generac QuietSource Series 36 kilowatt standby generator is ALMOST the perfect whole house generator.
Why only almost?
The larger, more expensive 48 kilowatt version produces a whopping 200-amps of electricity at 240 volts. Basically, it will replace every single amp capable of being supplied by the utility company.
The 36 kilowatt version generates only 150-amps or roughly 75% of the 200-amps coming through your electrical panel.
But, here's the bonus. You rarely use all 200-amps supplied by the utility. You use a ton during hot summer days. You barely use any at night.
In reality, you can save a bunch of money by buying a smaller generator, which will still power the whole house. It just won't have massive amounts of electricity to spare.
