This switch will automatically activate the Starter on you Generator when the power goes out for more than thirty seconds. Battery backups (UPS) on all my sensitive equipment keeps them on line a lot longer than that if needed there fore they do not loose power or have any surge issues before the power from my Generator kicks back on.
If you are using this switch on a Generac generator it will plug right into the start circuit. If it is another Generator you will need a good understanding of electric schematics and wiring. When power comes back on, the switch automatically and seamlessly switches back to Utility and then runs the generator no load for a few seconds before switching the generator off. This switch is awesome.
