  4 Questions
Q: Is It possible to install a Generac 8kW generator (model # 6245) with a Reliance Q510C transfer switch and only run it in manual mode when needed?
by Bob N. from Pennsylvania on January 29, 2014

A: All of the permanent home standby systems are automatically operated only and cannot be connected to any type of manual transfer switch. The generators internal controller must be connected to the appropriate automatic transfer switch for it to operate properly otherwise the controller will error and any connection or use with a manual switch or manually operated will void the manufactures warranty for improper installation and use.

The only available option for manual generator use is with a portable generator.

Q: Jim, I am in the process of putting in a 16 x 80 mobile home for a hunting camp. I'm having it built. It will be all gas ( stove, oven, heat, ) electric hot water heater and 3 ton a/c and normal lighting. There is no power at this location. Going to run power with generator. I have a 45kw backup generac at my home. I'm wanting to use a generac to run my camp. Would it work and what size would you recommend? It will run off of propane. Thanks, Scott M.
by Scott Menotti from Mississippi on January 19, 2014

A: The Generac standby units are for emergency backup power only and must be tied to a utility source for them to operate properly and to maintain their warranty. The generators internal controller needs to have utility power present to operate properly otherwise the system will error.

We currently do not offer any "Primary" or "Prime" power type generators. A prime power generator must be 1800 RPM and liquid cooled. Any air cooled or 3600 RPM generator is a standby generator only. If you attempt use a standby generator in a prime power situation the generators life expectancy can be shortened considerably and the potential for premature failure is increased dramatically.

The only options we offer for prime use would be a "Professional" portable generator or a tow behind unit (diesel) that is classified for "Prime" power.

Q: Hi,

I am considering a purchase of 8Kw Generac.

What does it mean by off-the-grid environment? How will I know if my house is also off-the-grid ?

by Pramod Gadilkar from New Jersey on October 15, 2013

A: Thank you for your inquiry!

The term off-grid refers to not being connected to a grid, mainly used in terms of not being connected to the main or national transmission grid in electricity. In electricity off-grid can be stand-alone systems (SHS) or mini-grids typically to provide a smaller community with electricity.

If your home does not receive power from a utility company, then you are considered to be off-grid.

Q: Can the Nexus 200 amp Smart Switch be installed with a smaller (8KW) generator? We may be limited to the smaller generator due to propane supply issues, but love the load shedding concept.
by Jim White from Connecticut on May 12, 2013

A: Typically a smaller 8000 watt generator does not have the output capacity to handle a whole house application even when using the load control manager. The constant turning on and off equipment that the generator will never be able to run can be extremely harmful to the generator and to your equipment such as your AC or other larger loads.

We recommend consulting with a certified electrician to properly size the generator based on your actual needs and equipment in your home.

Yes, you can use the whole house switch but it is not recommended with a 8000 watt generator which is why manufacturers do not prepackage them together.

The 10kW unit is the largest prepackaged model that includes the whole house transfer switch but is also available with a select circuit.

Dead In 5 Years
Bought this new from here in 2011. Had a professional certified electrician install it along with standby transfer case. Had it yearly maintenance by an authorized dealer/service. Year 2016 it failed and the annual service confirm engine is shot. Less than 100hrs total which includes 10hrs/year self check run and no more than 16hrs of continuous operation when I did need it. Called Genarac and they said not under warranty ( I knew that) but their comment that 'well, it is a machine' says... more

Don't Even Think About Purchasing This Generac Generator-8kw
From the moment we started it, shut off after 10 minutes due to low oil pressure. Called Generac certified technician and said we needed a new motor! Really?!?!?! How about a new generator altogether!!! Would you buy a new car and being told after 3 weeks that it needs a new motor? I don't think so. Now, we are stuck with this defective generator.

I am going further with is. Best of all, after doing online research, I have read more complaints and problems with other consumers with... more

The good thing is that Generac does stand by their products. A technician that immediately states the motor is bad should not be the guy checking the unit. A recommendation would be to contact a different certified Generac technician for a second opinion.

I am delighted I chose to buy a unit from Elec. Buying direct saved me a lot of money and time in getting my generator installed and running in 7 days from the first time I called Elec. Gen. Direct. Off To A Bad Start
The very first disappointment was with the "$50/$50 Protect Your Neighbor REFERRAL REBATE" as it seems GENERAC doesn't like the purchase receipt issued by Electric Generators Direct. A fact that I shared with them was that, that's a problem you have to settle with Generators Direct. (Or as I saw it, their form letter can be viewed as "any excuse for not paying is a good excuse." )

The second disappointment was when I fired up this bad boy just to have it start and then... more

Standby Generac Generators
My purchase of the Model 6245 Generac Generator is my second purchase from Generac. My use of this generator was intended to be used in conjunction with a solar powered system for my barn. When the Generac dealer was there removing the old Generac Generator, I was informed I had ordered the wrong generator. The Model #6245 is a standby residential generator that is designed and wired to be hooked up to a house using 110AC current. Apparently, the wiring for the controller is different on... more

Great Price, Good Product, & Some Advice...
The truck came at a break in the Big Storm we were having in Northern California. I tarped the whole crate until the weather cleared. It rained for ten days. I removed the old Gen. and set the new one.

The 100A Transfer Switch was under the deck and so is the new one, The existing six small wires were perfect for the job.
I mislabeled a wire in the Transfer Switch as it was dark under there, a Black and a Brown. I had discovered that mistake after talking on the phone with the local... more

Power If You Need It
After years of frequent power outages, and last Christmas' ice storm leaving us with no power for eight days and a few after, I'm tired of getting, pouring ,and smelling of gas. I finally said "enough."

I had it installed, it starts each week, and I hope I never have to use it, but I'll have power if I need it. Get a good installer.
