Q: I plan to wire the AC thermostat "y" wires to the AC LSM on our new 5875 gen set. I also ordered 4 purchased 4 DLM modules. If there are four restore priorites and there are possible 6 loads shed (2 AC + 4 DLM's), how do the last 2 shed loads get restored? Seems like there should be 6 restore priorities?
Q2: How do I program in the restore priorities? I can not find anything in the installation or operation manual on how to program the gen set contol panel?
I would really appreciate your help on this as I will hopefull have it ready to activate after next weekend.
Thank, Don Pappe
by Don Pappd from Oklahoma on March 21, 2012
A: The first 2 priorities are AC 1 & AC 2 with the other loads being 1 - 4 and the AC loads are looked at first by the load manager which is not programmable.
The system itself will start loads starting at AC1 and stop loads starting at Priority #4 and working backwards so it depends on how you specifically wire the items to the load manager. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Where do I get the installation instructions for the Generac Home Standby Generators? by T Wanamaker from New York on March 12, 2012
A: The unit comes with the installation instructions or you can find them on the Generac website. The instructions you get without the serial number will be basic.
Q: Hi Jim, I have a 3.5 ton ac unit.would the 6052 14kw generac be sufficent. The only other item that draws elec constantly would be the refrig, other than that its the usual lights and a tv. Thanks John by John from New Jersey on February 22, 2012
A: Air conditioner equipment power in the U.S. is often described in terms of "tons of refrigeration". A "ton of refrigeration" is approximately equal to the cooling power of one short ton (2000 pounds or 907 kilograms) of ice melting in a 24-hour period.
The value is defined as 12,000 BTU per hour, or 3517 watts. Residential central air systems are usually from 1 to 5 tons (3 to 20 kilowatts (kW)) in capacity.
The best way to calculate the wattage needed is to put an amp meter on the unit and use the following formula to calculate the starting wattage required.
Starting Amps x Volts = Watts
So, if you exceed the capacity of the generator then you need a larger unit and would need to step up to the 17kW - 6053.
It is always best to have a certified electrician evaluate your wattage requirements so you select the right generator.
Q: Are two DLM included in the Generac Guardian series 5875 with the purchase of the unit? by Richard Bull from Pennsylvania on February 12, 2012
A: There are 2 AC connections in the Generac Nexus Smart Switch™ which the thermostat wire is run to. So, when the thermostat calls for air/heat and the generator has enough power it will allow the call to go through, thus allowing the AC unit/units to run.
To connect to 2 AC units the DLM modules are not necessary since the AC unit already has a built in contactor/relay controlled by your thermostat.
The DLM modules are for loads (up to 50A) that do not have any control options such as electric ovens or electric water heaters. The DLM acts as a contactor/relay which the transfer switch tell to open or close (on/off) depending on the available wattage from the generator.
Q: Does the Gen#6052 have an automatic disconnect? by Goldie Williamson from Oklahoma on February 05, 2012
A: Yes, model 6052 does come with a 200 Amp automatic transfer switch with smart circuit technology and is designed for whole house applications as long as the generator is still sized properly.
Q: Hi Jim,is there any codes to how far from a window the standby generator must be.
Thank You Frank by Frank Gelsomino from Connecticut on January 24, 2012
A: NFPA 37 - 4.1.4 Engines Located Outdoors. Engines, and their weatherproof housings if provided, that are installed outdoors shall be located at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from openings in walls and at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from structures having combustible walls. A minimum separation shall not be required where either of the following conditions exist:
(1) The adjacent wall of the structure has a fire resistance rating of at least 1 hour. (2)*The weatherproof enclosure is constructed of noncombustible materials and has been demonstrated that a fire within the enclosure will not ignite combustible materials outside the enclosure.
The above code is referenced in NFPA 70 - Article 445 Generator Locations.
You do need to reference with your local inspector what the requirements are for your local city codes along with the requirements in your area for noncombustible materials.
Always consult with a certified electrician on all installation procedures and processes.
Q: What is the percentage of THD for the 5871 Standby Generator? Is this figure somewhere in the specs pages or owners manual? by Ray Lacourse from Massachusetts on January 04, 2012
A: The THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) for the Generac Guardian Series Home Standby Generators is less then 5% which can be found in the Generac spec sheet. The link for the spec sheet is under our specs tab on the product page.
Q: i have a space out side next to the house about 4ft by 6ft. It bordered by the house a fence and a metal bulkhead for access to my basement. Could this space work to install for stand by generator? My electric meter and box are all on this corner of the house. by Mike from Connecticut on October 04, 2011
A: Generac has minimum distance requirement for proper cooling and air flow for the generator and your local city, county or state code may have some specific requirements, so it would be best to consult with an installer/certified electrician in your area for confirmation. The Generac installation drawing link is below.
Q: How far does the 14kw generator have to be from the house with no windows inside. what are the set back codes that you recommend?
Mike by Mike Smith from New Jersey on September 24, 2011
A: On the product page under the specs link we list the installation drawing which shows recommended dimensions from a house but you will need to confirm with your local electrician as your city, county or state codes may be different and would override the manufacturers recommendations.
Q: I have a three level single family home with approx. 3,300 sq ft. what size generator would I need to power my entire home during a power outage? by Harold from Maryland on August 31, 2011
A: The Generac Guardian 6052 has the strength to power a good portion of your home.
However, this model isn't the ideal choice if you want to power a central a/c unit.
If you want to run a 4-ton a/c, we recommend getting the 17 kw version.
If you want to run a 5-ton a/c, we recommend getting the 20 kw version.
I have had a small generator for years. Decides to buy a stand by generator. This product powers the whole house, 2 ac, all lights with power to spare. So far so good, haven't had a power outage yet. Easy to install and Great price.

What You Should Know
If you are buying online, like from Electric Generators direct, make sure you have the unit installed by a Authorized Generac Service person/company in your area. Here's what happened to us.
First...Our 6052 is heavy (over 400lbs)...you have to have some way to move it from where its dropped to where it needs to be placed. I was fortunate to know someone who has a hand operated forklift. We placed our unit on five, concrete blocks we purchased at Home Depot.
Second...Know you towns building codes concerning Generators...We got quite an education.
Third...unfortunately, our unit came with a defective "mother" board. If you have a problem with your unit, Generators Direct will refer you to Generac. Generac will not give you technical information...(i.e. Why am I getting this error code?) They ask who installed your unit and if it's not an Authorized Gernerac Service person, they will not speak with your electrician...however they will give you the name of an Authorized person in your area. Our local guy was terrific and didn't give me any hassle about not buying the unit from him. He determined the issue was the motherboard. The unit is under warranty, so there was no charge to us.
My firm recommendation is to use a Generac Authorized Service person to install your unit...no matter how good/reliable YOUR electrician may be. If you have a problem, Generac will not talk to them!

Had this unit installed about a year and a half ago. Purchased from EGD.com. No cost for delivery and no tax. Delivered as promised. On October 30th, we lost power for six days after the early snowstorm in NJ. This generator ran 24 7 for six days straight and powered virtually all of my lights, sump pump, three refrigerators, furnace, garage doors, oven, 3 tvs, cable boxes, computers, washer dryer and more. It also ran for three days after the hurricane this summer. It was cool being the only one with power. Kids friends came over to shower and charge their phones and laptops.
Wife thought it was a waste of money when I purchased. She is now a believer after the recent hurricane and snowstorm that took out power and I was out of town.
