Q: I plan to wire the AC thermostat "y" wires to the AC LSM on our new 5875 gen set. I also ordered 4 purchased 4 DLM modules. If there are four restore priorites and there are possible 6 loads shed (2 AC + 4 DLM's), how do the last 2 shed loads get restored? Seems like there should be 6 restore priorities?
Q2: How do I program in the restore priorities? I can not find anything in the installation or operation manual on how to program the gen set contol panel?
I would really appreciate your help on this as I will hopefull have it ready to activate after next weekend.
Thank, Don Pappe
by Don Pappd from Oklahoma on March 21, 2012
A: The first 2 priorities are AC 1 & AC 2 with the other loads being 1 - 4 and the AC loads are looked at first by the load manager which is not programmable.
The system itself will start loads starting at AC1 and stop loads starting at Priority #4 and working backwards so it depends on how you specifically wire the items to the load manager. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Where do I get the installation instructions for the Generac Home Standby Generators? by T Wanamaker from New York on March 12, 2012
A: The unit comes with the installation instructions or you can find them on the Generac website. The instructions you get without the serial number will be basic.
Q: Are two DLM included in the Generac Guardian series 5875 with the purchase of the unit? by Richard Bull from Pennsylvania on February 12, 2012
A: There are 2 AC connections in the Generac Nexus Smart Switch™ which the thermostat wire is run to. So, when the thermostat calls for air/heat and the generator has enough power it will allow the call to go through, thus allowing the AC unit/units to run.
To connect to 2 AC units the DLM modules are not necessary since the AC unit already has a built in contactor/relay controlled by your thermostat.
The DLM modules are for loads (up to 50A) that do not have any control options such as electric ovens or electric water heaters. The DLM acts as a contactor/relay which the transfer switch tell to open or close (on/off) depending on the available wattage from the generator.
Q: Hi Jim,is there any codes to how far from a window the standby generator must be.
Thank You Frank by Frank Gelsomino from Connecticut on January 24, 2012
A: NFPA 37 - 4.1.4 Engines Located Outdoors. Engines, and their weatherproof housings if provided, that are installed outdoors shall be located at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from openings in walls and at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from structures having combustible walls. A minimum separation shall not be required where either of the following conditions exist:
(1) The adjacent wall of the structure has a fire resistance rating of at least 1 hour. (2)*The weatherproof enclosure is constructed of noncombustible materials and has been demonstrated that a fire within the enclosure will not ignite combustible materials outside the enclosure.
The above code is referenced in NFPA 70 - Article 445 Generator Locations.
You do need to reference with your local inspector what the requirements are for your local city codes along with the requirements in your area for noncombustible materials.
Always consult with a certified electrician on all installation procedures and processes.
Q: What is the percentage of THD for the 5871 Standby Generator? Is this figure somewhere in the specs pages or owners manual? by Ray Lacourse from Massachusetts on January 04, 2012
A: The THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) for the Generac Guardian Series Home Standby Generators is less then 5% which can be found in the Generac spec sheet. The link for the spec sheet is under our specs tab on the product page.
Q: Looking at the 6051 with the 200 amp transfer switch. I understand this would power my whole electric panel (utilizing up to the available kw). My question is how does it handle devices it might not be strong enough to power /start. If I wasn't home and the power went off and the geneartor kicks in, and now the central A/C tries to turn on? Im trying to make sure it wouldn't end up damanging the unit or turning into some cycle where it continually attempts to start it, and other features say as the sump pump wouldn't run. by Adam from Illinois on October 01, 2011
A: This model has the smart automatic transfer switch that allows you to hook up 2 air conditioners to a digital load module.
Basically, the transfer switch powers the circuits you select from your panel first, your sump pump for example. If there is enough power then it will allow your air conditioner to power on. If there is not enough power your air conditioner will not cycle on.

Jim's Recommendation
This new Generac 10kW comes with the latest technology Nexus Smart Switch and Nexus Digital controller. This 10kW with a DLM and Nexus Smart transfer switch will give you the ability to power most of your house and run your air conditioners if power is available.
At 63dBA it is less noisy that your vacuum cleaner!
This model has been a great seller for us since we added it to our site.
The 6051 has a steel enclosure with RhinoCoat finish that can sustain winds up to 150 mph. If you live in an area that gets pummeled with salt water, you might consider moving to the 17kW or 20kW that come with an aluminum enclosure.

6051 Generator
I had it within days of being shipped, and with lift gate, was dropped shipped right into my garage. 1 week later I had it installed. Some tip's on the auto transfer switch. I had the AC unit wired to AC 1 and if the AC was running when power went out, it would NOT drop out soon enough causing Gen to stall out on start up. Other than that, gen will run the house plus AC.
The cure, I installed a DLM for the AC unit, and now it cuts off all power to AC and gen will run fine, and when AC settles down, (resets itself) it will again run fine on Gen. I also put water heater on a DLM, and later will put electric over (40amp unit) on a DLM. I will also order 1 extra DLM just to have it here in case 1 fails for some reason, beats waiting for 1 to be shipped to me.
It took 2 people 8hrs to fully install this unit, and that's with all the 2 DLMs also. PPG was fully set up in 2 hrs, and that's bringing out a tank, piping it in, and filling the tank.
A month later and lot's of thinking, I was able to do what I was told I could not do with a 10kw gen, but for me will work OK. But now I wish I had spend a little more and gone with the 17kw or 20kw unit. But this 10kw is a lot larger than the 6.2kw I was using before and will do a lot more at the same time. I would rate this as a good 1st time unit for anyone on a tight budget.
To program this unit is very simple to do.
And talk about quiet, we MUST listen to hear it inside the house. That's 1 big plus for this size gen...................

A Great Buy
A great generator at a great price, with great service. My generator was delivered earlier than I expected, (It was on back order when I ordered it), and I saved over $2000, on the total installation, compared with the prices I was quoted by local dealers. I would buy from these people again. I have a small house, with a shallow well, no electric hot water heater, and no central air. This unit powers the whole house, with power to spare. I'm really glad I bought it!

Generator Performs Flawlessly
Installed the 10K version last year and it powers everything except the heatpump when the power goes off. Lost power during the Jan 2012 Seattle winter storm for 6-days. Prevented the lost of three freezers worth of food and provided home heating (backup propane) keeping the family comfortable and preventing water pipes from freezing. Comfort knowing it's there when we need it. Great investment!

Why Did I Wait So Long To Get This Asset For My Home
After two ice storms and countless power outages from weather. I said enough is enough. I searched all the box store sites and could not come close to electric generators direct price or service. Great people to deal with a pleasure. After a few calls and much help I ordered the 6051 / smart circuit stand by. It arrived and with in a few hours my electrician had the unit hooked up and running. Well pleased!!! Only question I had was WHY did I waited so long to get this asset for my home. Thank you

It Is Great
We purchased our Generac after Hurricane Irene. My husband did the electrical installation and the installation of the generator. When we had the winter storm the end of October, everything was set except the LP Gas. We went out Sunday and purchased two 100LB LP tank and hooked them up and when that generator kicked on, my husband and I were nothing but smiles. It worked just as advertised and when the power came back on 3 days later, we didn't even know what had happened. All of a sudden the generator shut down. We thought something was wrong. There was no lost of power or sign that the power came on and the generator was no longer needed. It was absolutely fabulous. Highly recommended.

My New Generator
I got the delivery of my Generator approximately 1 week prior to Hurricane Irene and it's devastation hitting my area. Well low and behold I managed to get the plumber to run the gas line and my husband to hook up the Generator to the house during that week.
I can't begin to tell you how awesome it was to have the power go off and then listen for my Generator to start up and supply my house with the electric it needed. My husband proudly stated "I told you so" as he was the one pushing for this purchase in the first place.
I can only say this was a great piece of equipment to add to my home as now I no longer fear or worry about being without electric any longer. Thank You

I purchased this unit so I no longer had to worry about Hurricane's and Winter storm power failures. Well the day after I installed it there goes the power, someone hit a pole and dropped the power out for 3 hrs.
To start the unit is great, the install was not bad at all, I went with the 200 amp with the Smart Circuit Switch and after 3 hrs it was installed and up and running. The unit is quiet running and handles the load of my house with ease.
I would recommend this unit to all that have the thought of installing a Standby Generator. The company customer service is great , they back what they sell and the Generac customer service people are there when EGD customer service gets stumped with a install question or two.
Great Service, Awesome Generator, Must buy for those who really want the best
