Q: Can you tell me how many inches of water pressure we need for the 183cubic feet per hour. Aslo, what diameter pipe would be required for a 30 foot run? by Paul Reale, P.E. from Georgia on March 25, 2012
A: 5 to 7 inches of water column for natural gas and per the manufacturers recommendations on a 30 ft run with a 17kW generator you would need to use a 1 inch pipe which has a maximum distance of 40 ft.
If you need to go any farther then you must step-up to a 1-1/4 inch pipe which has a maximum distance of 190 ft.
Q: Jim I have a 100 amp Pre-Nexus service rated transfer switch. Can I use this with a nexus generator? Ive heard there is some special wiring for the battery charger to work by Mike Noonan from Michigan on April 18, 2011
A: There is a special kit that needs to be added to the switch to accept the 120V connection which provides the power to the internal generator controller for the charger. These kits are available from your local Generac dealer - Part Number: OH93030SRV.
Q: How far does a generator has to be from my house? by Jim from Massachusetts on February 04, 2011
A: The manufacturer recommends the back side of the unit to be set no less then 18 inches from any non-combustible surface and the sides of the unit need at least 36 inches for proper intake and exhaust.
Note: It is recommended to check with your city, county and state codes as they may differ from the manufacturers recommendations.
Q: What kind of oil comes in the generator, and when it is time to change it? Can I run Mobile 1 Synthetic 5W30 year round in central Oklahoma? by Ron Hopper from Oklahoma on January 24, 2011
A: The Generac standby generators are shipped with 5W30 oil in them and Generac does give the option to use 5W30 Synthetic in needed. The owner's manual covers all oil options and temperature ranges. Oil changes are determined by use and maintenance is also covered in the manual.
Q: Can this generator be anchored to the slab? If so, can you provide an anchor bolt layout by Gregg Deemer from Texas on January 21, 2011
A: Generac's model 5885, as with all of their standby generators, are anchored to the pallet at all 4 corners with special anchors which can be used to anchor the unit directly to your concrete base using concrete bolts. by Jim, Product Expert

Works Great In The Mountains & Paid For Itself Already
Installed it myself after figuring out where to place the ATS. We live above 9,000 feet and have winter 6..9 months out of the year, with wind chills of -50.
Bought a battery heater blanket and a thermo plug and hooked that up to a dusk-to-dawn outlet. Always starts for weekly maintenance exercise and when power goes out (wind knocking out power lines). The power went out when we were away for a few cold days and we didn't have any frozen pipes when we returned, so it saved us the expense and damage of that. :-)
We have the well, the furnace, the tankless water heater, lights, TV, 2 big PC's, three (3) refrigerators, and a full freezer hooked up to it.
I crunched the numbers and got a 17 kW, but probably should have gotten a 20 kW in case we add more circuits or the neighbors come asking if they can borrow some power...

Piece Of Mind
I bought my 17KW in Sept 2011 It took me a couple of months of thinking about making such a large purchase on a generator already owning a Generac portable. Knowing how much trouble it is when power goes out and having to set up the portable generator and then sometimes as soon as your all set up power comes back on.
This standby is a beautiful piece of machinery and till now is a very good sounding and powerful unit. I am a very happy man today by making this purchase I don't have to worry any more when power goes out and I have ac. If your thinking of a stand by generator this is a good unit and has plenty of power to run my 1600 sq. ft. home and 1 3.5 ac unit.
I did pay a good price for electrical connection by a certified installer but it doesn't void my warranty. And I also I'm running propane do not have gas. And finally Generators Direct also did deliver as said and also saved the 2% by paying with check

Lawn Mower Stones
My generator got several chips and a small dent from letting my 14 year old cut the grass with my lawn tractor. I bought the kit and prepped the area by cleaning and then scuffing the surface. Just a few shots from the factory paint and she looks almost unmarked! Great color match and minimal effort to repair the nicks.....

Installer
I like the unit but the wiring area is unnecessarily tight and difficult to make the connections. I noticed that even the factory installed wiring had numerous strands of wires sticking out of the terminal blocks which probably means they had a tough time getting the wire into the terminal while screwing the terminal down . Generac's engineers need use to re-think the wiring compartment in terms of access.
Electric generators Direct were fantastic. Easy to order, quick on the delivery. Thanks!!!

It Went Flawlessly
My neighbor and I installed the entire system after the generator was delivered to the slab. We found the installation instructions easy to follow. We had a certified installer check-out our installation and commission the unit. It went flawlessly.
