Q: Jim, I already have a Pro Tran 31410 B, 10 circuit Transfer switch box hooked up to my home. Will the Generac Guardian Series 5882 - 8kW generator hook up to this Pro Tran switch box ? by Scott from New Jersey on January 26, 2012
A: Absolutely not, no home standby systems we carry are designed to work with manual transfer switches. They are all proprietary and must be connected to their respective automatic transfer switch.
Q: Jim I have a 100 amp Pre-Nexus service rated transfer switch. Can I use this with a nexus generator? Ive heard there is some special wiring for the battery charger to work by Mike Noonan from Michigan on April 18, 2011
A: There is a special kit that needs to be added to the switch to accept the 120V connection which provides the power to the internal generator controller for the charger. These kits are available from your local Generac dealer - Part Number: OH93030SRV.
What is the difference between a "Generac" and a "Generac Guardian"?
by Hal from California on March 24, 2011
A: Generac Guardian is a name for a series of products, mainly their Home Standby generators that are for residential use.
They are both made by Generac, Guardian is just a sub brand for Generac. The features for a Generac Guardian series are:
*Automatic, hands-free backup power supply for home or business. * Kicks in within ten seconds of determining power loss. Your life won’t miss a beat. * Powered by Generac’s OHVI® engine - designed specifically for generators. Lasts three to four times longer than many competitive engines. * Easiest installation and best value on the market - many models pre-packaged with a pre-wired transfer switch. All models include mounting pad. * TruePower™ Technology provides clean, smooth operation of sensitive electronics and appliances. * Quiet-Test™ mode for a weekly self test that’s quieter than other brands. * The most environmentally friendly generator on the market - consumes less fuel and releases fewer emissions.
Q: How far does a generator has to be from my house? by Jim from Massachusetts on February 04, 2011
A: The manufacturer recommends the back side of the unit to be set no less then 18 inches from any non-combustible surface and the sides of the unit need at least 36 inches for proper intake and exhaust.
Note: It is recommended to check with your city, county and state codes as they may differ from the manufacturers recommendations.
Q: What kind of oil comes in the generator, and when it is time to change it? Can I run Mobile 1 Synthetic 5W30 year round in central Oklahoma? by Ron Hopper from Oklahoma on January 24, 2011
A: The Generac standby generators are shipped with 5W30 oil in them and Generac does give the option to use 5W30 Synthetic in needed. The owner's manual covers all oil options and temperature ranges. Oil changes are determined by use and maintenance is also covered in the manual.
Q: Can this generator be anchored to the slab? If so, can you provide an anchor bolt layout by Gregg Deemer from Texas on January 21, 2011
A: Generac's model 5885, as with all of their standby generators, are anchored to the pallet at all 4 corners with special anchors which can be used to anchor the unit directly to your concrete base using concrete bolts. by Jim, Product Expert

I was looking for a really well built Generator. I checked Onan and Cat but they were too big for what I needed. I kept seeing Generac and have wired some up for customers that ordered them but I was not impressed. Generac kept coming up as the best choice for my customers needs so I finally ordered one. I studied this unit and have found them to be second to no one. The company building these is doing it right. Someone said it was noisey, it's a running engine and I thought it was very quiet. Thank You Electric Generators Direct.

I have installed numerous older Generac's and only one of these newer models. Very easy install and the newer models are easier to service. I love them.

I have installed 2 of these units in the past year for customers. They are excellent products. The directions are very clear, making installation simple. I would recommend Generac products to anyone interested. My only regret is that one time I ordered the generator that did not include the transfer switch. This caused me to have to order the switch separately which raised the price by $250 for materials and shipping. The complete package of generator and switch is the best buy. My customers are very pleased with their back up systems.
