Q: I am interested in the 8kw natural gas Generac generator. I have a gas furnace and a fire place - gas log; Will I need a dedicated gas pipe line for my Generac generator or can I tap off existing t in basement? by Tom Shea from Massachusetts on April 24, 2013
A: Manufacturer recommends a dedicated fuel line to the generator which helps prevent running issues. 90% of all generator problems are caused by fuel issues and improper installation.
Q: Jim, I am awaiting delivery of the 5870 and would like to know what size concrete slab you recommend by Thomas Gould from New York on January 14, 2013
A: The minimum thickness is 3 - 4 inches thick and the dimensions can be found in the installation drawing on the website under the specs link on the generator model page....
Q: Can the 100amp transfer switch that comes with model #5870, be mounted in a weatherproof enclosure for outside installation, which is where my main distribution panel is located.
Thanks, Ervin by Ervin Rathbone from North Carolina on January 14, 2013
A: Yes, as long as you change the wiring cover to a weather proof covering and change the connections so no water can get into the switch. This will need to pass your local codes and inspector.
Note: You may lose your UL rating on the switch as this was tested for indoor installation only.
Q: If the distance from the transfer switch to the generator far exceeds the 32 ft. prepackaged configuration, would I order a prepackaged unit then eliminate the 32' shielded cable and replace with my own? What is the gauge of the power wires in the 32' cable? by Dan Vecchio from New Jersey on December 22, 2012
A: The indoor run from the switch to the wall where you go out to the generator is 30 feet and the run from the switch to your electrical panel is 2 feet. The generator also has an outdoor run of 5 feet connected to the back of the generator along with an outdoor connection box to connect the 30 foot length to where you penetrate the wall.
Per Generac you can add an additional maximum of 15 feet to any of the 3 lengths if needed.
The control wires are 14 gauge, the 2 hots and neutral are #6 and the ground is #8.
Q: How often does Generac suggest servicing an 8kw essential circuit? How long before oil should be changed? by Bryan Sullivan from New Jersey on December 21, 2012
A: According to the manual it would be every 2 years or 200 hours, whichever comes first.
Q: Hi can this 8kw can be used with electronic equipment . Generac Guardian 8kw standby generator system ( 100A 10 circuit switch) by Emil Scharer from New York on December 08, 2012
A: Yes, this system does offer Generac's TruePower technology allowing you to power sensitive electronics with their less then 5% THD (Total Harmonic Distortion).
Q: My 500 gal propane tank has a two stage regulator on it . Do I need another regulator at the the generator? by Michael Schwartz from New York on October 07, 2012
A: A regulator may be required if the pressure exceeds the generators required 10 to 12 inches of water column (0.36 - 0.43 psi)
Q: Are mounting bolts for concrete install included in unit packaging? by Walter from South Carolina on October 06, 2012
A: Generac does not provide the concrete mounting bolts with the generator because it is optional to permanently mount it to concrete. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Does the 5870 construction (enclosure make up) meet NFPA 37 condition 2 requirement? by Bob from New Jersey on October 02, 2012
A: Subsection 4.1.4 of NFPA 37 reads as follows:
“4.1.4 Engines Located Outdoors. Engines, and their weatherproof housings if provided, that are installed outdoors shall be located at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from openings in walls and at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from structures having combustible walls. A minimum separation shall not be required where the following conditions exist:
(1) The adjacent wall of the structure has a fire resistance rating of at least 1 hour. (2)* The weatherproof enclosure is constructed of noncombustible materials and it has been demonstrated that a fire within the enclosure will not ignite combustible materials outside the enclosure.”
A4.1.4 (2) Means of demonstrating compliance are by means of full scale fire test or by calculation procedures. Because of the limited spaces that are frequently available for installation, it has become apparent that exception (2) would be beneficial for many residential and commercial installations. With that in mind, the manufacturer contracted with an independent testing laboratory to run full scale fire tests to assure that the enclosure would not ignite combustible materials outside the enclosure.
Per Generac Owner's Manual (All 8, 10, 14, 17 & 20kW Air Cooled Automatic Standby Generator):
The criteria was to determine the worst case fire scenario within the generator and to determine the ignitability of items outside the engine enclosure at various distances. The enclosure is constructed of non-combustible materials and the results and conclusions from the independent testing lab indicated that any fire within the generator enclosure would not pose any ignition risk to nearby combustibles or structures, with or without fire service personnel response.
Based on this testing and the requirements of NFPA 37, Sec 4.1.4, the guidelines for installation of the generators listed above are changed to 18 inches (457mm) from the back side of the generator to a stationary wall or building. For adequate maintenance and airflow clearance, the area above the generator should be at least 4 feet with a minimum of 3 feet at the front and ends of the enclosure. This would include trees, shrubs and vegetation that could obstruct airflow. See the diagram on the installation drawing within the owner’s manual on under the specs link for details.
Generator exhaust contains DEADLY carbon monoxide gas. This dangerous gas can cause unconsciousness or death. Do not place the unit near windows, doors, fresh air intakes (furnaces, etc.) or any openings in the building or structure, including windows and doors of an attached garage.
Q: I have received my 20Kw Generac 5875. Was it shipped with oil or do I need to add oil before i start it up? Or is it just a break in oil (the oil on the dip stickis very light) that needs to be removed and filled with what I will be using in this area? Shipment was timely and arrived n excellent condition. by Larry from Washington on September 30, 2012
A: These units have been run and tested at the factory prior to being shipped and do not require any type of break-in.
This unit comes filled with oil from the factory. Check the oil level and add the appropriate amount if necessary.
Q: Need to run central air, a large screen TV, 2 refrigerators, some lights, and a computer.
What size LP generator would I need? by Penny Murphy from California on September 28, 2012
A: Proper sizing of the generator is crucial to the success of any generator installation and requires a good working knowledge of electricity and its characteristics, as well as the varying requirements of the electrical equipment comprising the load. A certified electrician needs to be consulted for proper sizing and installation of any generator.
When analyzing the electrical load, consult the manufacturer’s nameplate on each major appliance or piece of equipment to determine its starting and running requirements in terms of watts, amps and voltage. When choosing the generator output select a rating that is approximately 20 to 25% higher than the peak load (for example, if the load is about 8 kilowatts, select a 10 kW generator).
A higher rated generator will operate comfortably at approximately 80% of its full capacity and will provide a margin of flexibility if the load increases in the future.
Q: Where do you connect the 12VDC battery charger? by Darrell from Texas on July 15, 2012
A: The Generac Guardian home standby generators have a built in battery charger in the controller inside the generator called the battery sentinel.
This charger will only charge the battery when needed so it will not overload the battery and the controller in the generator monitors the battery and will notify you when there is a battery issue. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Hi Jim, Would 14kw Generac handle 3.5 ton AC unit and some essential circuits? by Mike Careccia from Texas on July 05, 2012
A: Yes, it should have enough power to get the small central air conditioner working. However, it won't have much left over for other items in the house.
You should consider getting the Smart Circuit version instead. This way, it can power additional circuits in the house when the AC isn't running.
Yes, it will cost a little more, but you'll appreciate the extra appliances running when the AC is off.
Q: Do the generators have a built in propane regulator for the Generac 8 and or 10kw models? by Curtis Gibson from Virginia on July 03, 2012
A: They do have their own propane regulator but if you are supplying too much service a separate exterior regulator is required. The one in the unit is not adjustable.
Q: What size breaker do I need for the main panel for a Generac model 5870? by Terry from Ohio on May 31, 2012
A: You will need a 40A double pole breaker for the 8kW Essential Circuit model and all other Essential Circuit models (10-17kW) require a 70A double pole breaker.
Q: I would prefer installing a concrete pad for the 5870 and would like to know how much wider should the concrete pad be then the unit on all sides? by Cecilia Blue from Maryland on April 11, 2012
A: There should be a 6" overhang from the generator for a good stable base. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Warranty how long? by Jose from California on March 26, 2012
A: These units have a 3 year manufacturers warranty. You can find the warranty information in the owner's manual which is available on our site under the specs link.
Q: Where do I get the installation instructions for the Generac Home Standby Generators? by T Wanamaker from New York on March 12, 2012
A: The unit comes with the installation instructions or you can find them on the Generac website. The instructions you get without the serial number will be basic.
Q: If I need more wire than the 30 feet supplied, can I splice what ever i need onto it? Also, are the circuit breakers standard ones if i ever need to replace one, or do i have to buy them from Generac? by Stanley Zydel from New York on February 10, 2012
A: The maximum length you can add is 15 feet as long as local code permits adding length (some do not). If you need to go beyond this length then the entire run of wiring needs to be changed because of the wire sizes/gauge.
Generac typically uses Siemens breakers in their switches which allows for replacement to be easy.
Please keep in mind that you cannot put larger amperage breakers in to replace smaller amperage breakers.
Please always consult with a certified electrician for proper installation and wiring.
Q: Hi Jim,is there any codes to how far from a window the standby generator must be.
Thank You Frank by Frank Gelsomino from Connecticut on January 24, 2012
A: NFPA 37 - 4.1.4 Engines Located Outdoors. Engines, and their weatherproof housings if provided, that are installed outdoors shall be located at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from openings in walls and at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from structures having combustible walls. A minimum separation shall not be required where either of the following conditions exist:
(1) The adjacent wall of the structure has a fire resistance rating of at least 1 hour. (2)*The weatherproof enclosure is constructed of noncombustible materials and has been demonstrated that a fire within the enclosure will not ignite combustible materials outside the enclosure.
The above code is referenced in NFPA 70 - Article 445 Generator Locations.
You do need to reference with your local inspector what the requirements are for your local city codes along with the requirements in your area for noncombustible materials.
Always consult with a certified electrician on all installation procedures and processes.
Thanks, Jeff by Jeff from Pennsylvania on January 19, 2012
A: Pipe diameter is based on the distance the generator is from the fuel source and Generac recommends the following which should be confirmed by your installing plumber.
Q: What is the percentage of THD for the 5871 Standby Generator? Is this figure somewhere in the specs pages or owners manual? by Ray Lacourse from Massachusetts on January 04, 2012
A: The THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) for the Generac Guardian Series Home Standby Generators is less then 5% which can be found in the Generac spec sheet. The link for the spec sheet is under our specs tab on the product page.
Q: What is a composite pad ? by CHARLES BLYTHE from North Carolina on April 08, 2011
A: The composite pad is a strong, lightweight mounting pad provided to simplify the installation. By including the pad with the generator, installation time and cost is reduced since a concrete base is no longer a requirement. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: I was looking at the generac 10k LP generator. Can you hook that up to the 20lb gas grill tanks . Do they sell a manifold to hook up multiple bottles? by R L from New Jersey on March 19, 2011
A: You cannot use a Grill Propane tank on a home standby generator. These units are designed for use with tanks of 100 gallon or larger to supply adequate fuel for long periods of time. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Hello Jim, do you have, or can you recommend stand-by generator installers for the Houston, Texas area? We are in the N.W. Houston area. by David Reece from Texas on February 13, 2011
A: Since we do not get involved in the installation process and since we ship all over the continental US we do not have a list of installers to provide. You can contact a local Generac dealer who may do installations at a reasonable price and will provide you with the best installation knowledge. You do not necessarily have to purchase a Generac generator from them to utilize their installation and they would be your resource for maintenance and warranty repairs.
Q: How far does a generator has to be from my house? by Jim from Massachusetts on February 04, 2011
A: The manufacturer recommends the back side of the unit to be set no less then 18 inches from any non-combustible surface and the sides of the unit need at least 36 inches for proper intake and exhaust.
Note: It is recommended to check with your city, county and state codes as they may differ from the manufacturers recommendations.
Q: Is this generator (Model 5884) a good choice for off grid solar system backup. 14kw not essential circuit? by Avery Edwards from Colorado on January 25, 2011
A: The Generac 5884 generator is specifically designed for emergency backup only and will not be warranted in an off-the-grid application.
Generac did come out with a new model specifically designed for off-the-grid and solar applications.
Q: What size battery do I need? by James Fritch from Pennsylvania on January 25, 2011
A: The battery is a Group 26R with 525 cold cranking amps - which is often difficult to find locally.
However, don't get too caught up in the specs. We already sized the battery for this model.
Click on the "Add 12V Start Battery" box when ordering.
The current battery price is listed below the generator pricing by the check box.
We don't sell the batteries individually because they are hazardous materials that must ship via freight. If you bought one individually, it would cost more to ship than the battery is worth.
Since this generator is already shipping via semi-truck, we shrink wrap them together, and the battery tags along for the ride.
Q: What kind of oil comes in the generator, and when it is time to change it? Can I run Mobile 1 Synthetic 5W30 year round in central Oklahoma? by Ron Hopper from Oklahoma on January 24, 2011
A: The Generac standby generators are shipped with 5W30 oil in them and Generac does give the option to use 5W30 Synthetic in needed. The owner's manual covers all oil options and temperature ranges. Oil changes are determined by use and maintenance is also covered in the manual.
Q: Can this generator be anchored to the slab? If so, can you provide an anchor bolt layout by Gregg Deemer from Texas on January 21, 2011
A: Generac's model 5885, as with all of their standby generators, are anchored to the pallet at all 4 corners with special anchors which can be used to anchor the unit directly to your concrete base using concrete bolts. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Jim, We're interested in this Generac model 5870 and we were wondering under full load what size LP tank capacity should we consider and approximately how much run time could we expect. This will be used in a home application with backup to HVAC needs, a light circuit, sump pump refrigerator /freezer. 3,000 sq ft home. I know that there are many variables and I probably need to get you more information, however, I thought that this would be a good start. Thanks, Mike by Mike Mitrione from New Jersey on January 18, 2011
A: Proper sizing of the generator is to size it to 80% of the generators full capacity. A higher rated generator will operate comfortably at approximately 80% of its full capacity and will provide a margin of flexibility if the load increases in the future. So if your need is 8kW then you should look at a 10kW standby generator. Tank size is based on how much run time you want available when you lose power. The fuel usage is listed in the owner's manual which you can find our our website under the specs tab for each model. Normally a 100-Gal. tank or larger is best suited. Jim's Recommendation
The Guardian 8 kW Emergency Power System is the smallest home standby generator offered by Generac Power Systems with their OHVI industrial engine.
It starts automatically -- just the like the bigger versions -- and protects mission critical appliances from power failure.
Here's the major difference. The 8 kilowatt version can restore power to 10 mission-critical circuits, including a sump pump, refrigerator, furnace fans, lights and more.
The 17 kW version can restore power to 16 circuits, including a central air conditioner. The 8 kW version simply lacks the strength to turn over a central air conditioner.
If you can live without air conditioning during a power outage, it's a whole lot better than manually setting up and starting a portable generator.
Plus, it runs automatically even if you're home or not which allows those mission critical items to be powered, like your sump pump and avoiding that flooded basement.

Activated Just In Time
After getting the final gasline connected, the generator was activated just two days before hurricane Sandy struck. We had no power for 10½ days but the generator kept us comfortable throughout. After the power came back, the generator would not start because it needed a valve adjustment somewhat surprising to me after such a brief service life.
Nevertheless, a natural gas generator is the way to go. No need to refuel constantly, nor concern about the availability of gasoline when large areas are without power.

After A Year & A Half
I've had my 5870 running on NG for the last year and a half. Comes on quickly after power failure and returns to street power automatically. Just went through the "Blizzard of 13" and never had a worry. I'm on the site today looking up prices for my jealous neighbors.
Never again will I be out in the snow in the middle of the night fueling a gasoline generator in the blowing snow nor will I be worried when I'm away from home.

Good Product & Good People
I purchased the 5870 8kW Guardian with the 100A prewired automatic transfer switch. Because we can have cold weather here I also purchased the heater kit and the battery. These units were on backorder so while I was waiting I downloaded installation instructions and studied them. Also checked and verified amperage on circuits to be powered by generator, decided on location, and poured concrete pad. Generator arrived a little more than a week before it was promised. Had slight damage to composite base and no battery. Contacted customer service and they immediately took care of composite base problem and also refunded money for battery and I purchased one in town.
The people are great to work with and any questions I had. I got immediate response.. My son and I installed this unit ourselves with no problems, however I am used to working with electrical so that helps. Instructions were clear and easy to understand. Once the propane was hooked up, the unit started right up. Did all checks as noted in installation instructions and found no problems..
A couple days later it got down to -5 degrees so I started it just to see how it would start in cold weather. Unit started right up with no problem. Good product, good company, good people and good prices.

We've Had It With Power Outages
After being without power for six days during Sandy and four days the previous year we decided enough is enough. We ordered the 5870 and the delivery guy was nice enough to drag it to the back of my house using the rolling pallet jack. Due to the local zoning rules we had to put it at the back of the house rather than at the preferred location on the side of the house which would have resulted in much shorter electrical and gas runs. I installed it myself and the long gas and electric runs made the installation rather difficult.
It's comforting to hear the generator run automatically like clockwork every Sunday afternoon. We have not had a power outage since installation but we're confident it will do the job. A note of attention: voltage drop and gas pressure loss should be considered for long electrical and/or gas runs. Also, a determination of gas supply sufficiency should be made by the local utility co.

Thank You Guys
So that is it, After SANDY hit, we decided enough is enough and went for the 8KW Generac 5870. I don't usually take the time to post reviews except for the occasional E-bay feedback. But after my purchase From Electric Generators Direct, I felt it was my obligation to post my thoughts.
I Must honestly say that after extensive internet research, in store shopping , and a few E-mails here and there, Electric Generators Direct was the fastest, cheapest, and as well had great customer service.
To start with, after Sandy hit, all of the Generator brands where swamped with orders, with the most popular units 8k to 14k back ordered everywhere from 10 to 12 weeks. While Electric Generator Direct had it promised to me in a delivery due date of only 8 weeks, but not only that, it showed up in 6 weeks.
Next, the delivery people were great. Calling me in advance to set up delivery and the driver even helped me get the unit into place (of course we hooked him up $$$) showing up with the requested lift gate and pallet jack. Also, the unit came in pristine condition ,with not even a scratch on the box, SWEET.
Finally, I just wanted to add, that is what really made me make me buy the unit from these guys was the fact that while in the final stages of narrowing down my choice between two companies, I decided to call up the two perspective online stores and speak to someone in sales. Well, there were no comparison. Hands down Electric Generators Direct was better, knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful.
Kudos to Jose
Thank You and highly recommended.

So Far - So Good!
Though we only had to use the generator once so far since it was installed, it is great knowing that if our power goes out won't have to worry about not having electricity!!
I love the fact that it tests itself weekly and knowing that I do not have to do anything when the power does go out! There was so much included for the money we paid; and to know it will be a selling point if we ever sell our house in the future is a bonus!
The purchase was easy and the help we received from customer service when we had questions was great as well. I would recommend this site to anyone thinking about purchasing a generator.

So Far, So Good
Only one brief power outage since the installation....my unit kicked in and ran perfectly as advertised.
I absolutely love the feeling of security it's giving me; you can't put a price tag on that.
My Generac in that regard was quite reasonable and other family members are now interested, after seeing my setup.

W/o Power
I live in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Central California, where power outages are common. The Generac Guardian is, by far, the most popular backup power supply.
Living in a densely forested area that commonly experiences heavy wet snow (Sierra Cement) with high winds, power can be out for days at a time. Propane fuel is limited to the tank size and deliveries can be disrupted or delayed due to road conditions.
So as to conserve on fuel, a hard-wired in-house control or wireless in-house control for those with disabilities would be fantastic.

It's Not An Option Anymore
I just got it installed a week before the storm in NJ.
The generator came on and kept running for 2 weeks without any hitch.
For me this size was just fine as I only wanted heat on 2 zones, fridge, lights on both floors, garage door openers,
TV and Internet circuit, and our security system.
I think it is the best investment in this changing climate.

Almost In Time
We received the generator about 10 days before Superstorm Sandy. Due to delays in filing for the proper permits, we had only attached the gas line when the storm hit, knocking out power.
Two days later, the electrician came and using flashlights was able to connect the electric. Voila- power was on two days before our neighbors.
During the subsequent days power would have to be shut off from time to time for repairs. The generator kicked on every time.
Let it snow or blow or rain, we will always be safe and warm. Thank you Electric Generators Direct, and thank you Generac.

Generator Quick Review
So far it is working and doing the run-cycle test just fine. We have not had an outage to see how it performs.
It is not very loud and I like it so far. I hooked it up myself.

Nice Unit
I got the 5870 back in June, set it on a pad, didn't have time to connect it until this past Friday before Hurricane Sandy hit. It worked excellently. I was worried about some of the reviews I had seen, but I had no problems.
The transfer switch is a quality unit with plenty of wire on the generator lead. The generator itself wasn't as loud as some of the reviews I read - but I've been using a portable, so anything would be quieter.
My LP supplier didn't come to swap out the 50 gal. tank with the 100 gal. tank I purchased, so I had to manually manage our gas usage by switching the unit between 'Auto' and 'Off' to be sure we have enough fuel until we get power back, but this hasn't seemed to be a problem for the generator.
Overall, my experience so far says it's a good unit for the money...

There For Me
I just like having the peace of mind having this generator at my home.
Each week it starts up and exercises for twelve minutes. I installed it myself- it was quite simple.
I would highly recommend it.

I like the product. The generator is working fine after installation by a licensed/qualified electrician. The shipping and time of arrival went better than expected. Overall, I am happy with this purchase.

8 Kw Is Just Enough
I received my generator undamaged. It was a breeze to install only needed a pipe threader for natural gas and pipe fittings.
Inspection was good and the first test run was a success. It took a couple of tries to start, but once the gas line was cleared of all air it started right up. Noise level is moderate and the power transfer was perfect.
I hope to have many years of good operation. I only wish that the cold weather kit was included with the generator.
EGD RESPONDS: Many of our customers install their generators in places where there isn't any cold weather. The folks in Louisiana, for instance, probably wouldn't appreciate the extra expense of the cold weather kit.

Power Outage
We recently had our power lines replaced and lost power to the house for about an hour and a half. Thanks to the Generac we were able to have power for our lights, TV and most importantly- our well.
We are so glad we purchased your generator.

So Far So Good Update
Just wanted to update my review from yesterday and did not see a way to add or modify my initial review.
I had set up the weekly exercise schedule for today (Wednesdays @ 12 noon) as I wanted to follow up on the oil leak I observed yesterday during the initial tests. I removed the filter and re- installed it this morning prior to the noon time exercise start. Right at noon the unit started right up.
I observed the unit for the entire 12 minute exercise mode and apparently the oil filter was loose, as it did not leak this time. I was very relieved and suggest to all to check this as well as the oil level as suggested in the owners manual.
Also in response to EGD's edit to my post I totally agree with you however just to be clear I did NOT make any electrical modifications in my install. I cut a 4"x4" piece of the drywall under my main panel. I then used an electrical PVC 90 box so that I could connect the 2' whip from the transfer switch to the 90 and then run the wires through the 90 and mount the other end of the box to my panel. It was really the only way to connect the whip to a flush mounted main panel without totally tearing up the finished drywall.
So to sum it up....excellent ordering from EGD and unit arrived in a matter of days....unit in great shape and with just a few issues due to my location and finished basement location of main panel the installation went relatively smooth.
I look forward to many years of power restoration when needed, and highly recommend the unit and buying experience through EGD!
EGD RESPONDS: We add the caution about DIY installation to keep the lawyers happy...you will see it a lot on our site. We figure it's better to be safe than sorry; even if it makes us a little repetitive.
We appreciate your update!

So Far So Good On 5870 W/10 Circuit Ats
Ordered on a Monday and received that Friday which was excellent.
The only issues on delivery was my location and weather. Live on a rural dirt road and driver was in full 18 wheel TT....we have had TT on the road with no problems in the past but it was raining off and on all day so got a call from disbatch saying driver was at bottom of hill on our road and stuck in the mud and could not get up the hill. I ended up driving my pickup down to him and we ended up putting the unit in the back of my truck so not a big deal. Just a few things to consider on installing this unit (which I did myself except for running the gas line)
1. The transfer switch is quite large and quite heavy. It is NOT a flush mount switch. If your main breaker box is flush mount then this poses a few issues. I was able to get a decent looking install using some 90's and cutting an access at the bottom of my main panel but just be aware. Mounting the box to drywall also presents some issues due to weight of box so again be aware. Make sure you have enough space next to your main panel
2. The general installation guidelines are not real SPECIFIC in some areas so you need to do your research if you are self- installing. Once you have some of the confusing questions answered then the installation process was not too much of a pain.
The gas company came today and ran lines and I was finally able to run my tests and hear her run. Everything went well and she started right up. Only issue I have is a small oil leak that I noticed after it was running for about five minutes. Seems to be coming from the oil filter. Oil and filter are pre-installed so I am hoping its just a loose or mis-threaded filter but it was getting to dark so I will follow up tomorrow after I run it in exercise mode.
EGD RESPONDS: Please be aware that some municipalities & insurance companies require electrical modifications to be certified by a registered electrician. Be sure to check local building codes and with your insurance agent.

5870 Generator Install
Installed the 5870 Generator including the supplied transfer switch. Couple of issues, the question/answer web site indicates the use of 3/4" fuel (LP) line to the gen. However the generator is equiped with a flex 1/2" line and a reducer. I ran 3/4" all the way in.
The transfer switch is equipped with a main neutral wire that connects to the main utility supply. In addition, there are eight individual neutral wires connected to the transfer switch neutral buss. Also supplied are 16 wire nuts of which 8 are used for the load connections being transfered; and I assume the other 8 are for connecting to each transferred load neutral. Since the large transfer switch neutral is connected to the main utility neutral all is common and there should be no reason to cut and wire nut each load neutral.
That given, I tested the generator as described in the manual and all went as indicated. Load transfer and transfer back to utility was as planned.
Very satisfied so far.

I run an email filtering business & forensic data recovery service. For the last 9 years I have been dependent on battery backup units to keep my recovery machines operational.
Some data recovery jobs run for 20 days or more and cannot be interrupted. Over the years I have become adept at using large marine batteries and Mickey-Mouse gasoline generators to keep the power on. After one particular outage caused by drunk drivers and police chasing them, ending in the drunk driver taking out my power pole, I had had enough.
After 3 days my power was restored. Next day I ordered the 5870 generator. Brought it online on 8/15/2012.
I did not realize just how much peace of mind you get, to hear a generator start up on it's own.
I think I will go to the lake this weekend and get some MUCH need personal downtime.

Worked Like A Charm
I ordered this generator for our beach house located on the NW Florida coast. Electric Generators Direct shipped as promised and we began the installation process.
Setting up the generator was no problem, but installing the transfer switch proved to be a bit of a problem. The switch is quite large and would not fit into the wall space that we had planned for it. We solved this problem by mounting a weatherproof box on the outside of the house and installing the transfer switch in the box.
A few weeks after the installation was completed, a tropical storm came through our area. We lost electricity eight times over two days for a total of 21 hours. The generator worked perfectly, coming on every time the electricity went off and shutting down when it came back on.
Since that time, we have had a few other outages and the Generac worked perfectly every time. We are very satisfied.

Generator
A week after the generator was installed, the 10 minute test run ran perfectly--the second week it didn't run at all. The installer was called, contacted Generac, made a few adjustments and for the last two weeks it has been working. Haven't had to use it for a power outage yet.

Power In One Day
I received my generator on Thursday and had it installed by Friday. After running all the test requirements, I turned on the AC and a few lights, then turned off the main power. Although the load was at the max for this size generator, it only bogged down for about one and a half seconds and came right back up to speed. I was very surprised as to how quiet it ran. I had been using a 1000 watt portable and it was quieter than it. I am well pleased and will pass along my comments to others.

Peace Of Mind
My husband has Parkinson's Disease. Last winter we had an ice storm that left us without electricity for 1 week. Our dear friend from church loaned his portable generator. BUT there were cords laying on the floors and we had limited service. Not to mention having to fill it with gas every few hours. We had to have the furnace, frig, water pump, etc hooked up to it. I was so afraid my husband would trip over an extension cord. We decided to look into purchasing a Generac generator. We had to wait a long time to get it installed due to the lack of product, but we are very pleased to have it ready for any storm that may happen. Since we live in the country, our service is usually one of the last restored when there is a storm. Now we don't have to worry about it.

Never Trust Your Home To A Generac
My wife and I own a second house which is way out on the end of the power line run. Blackouts are frequent and last a long time when they happen. We leave the house open and running year round and like to get out there every couple of weeks during the winter, but have always been afraid that a blackout would freeze and damage the pipes. We finally, after years of being lucky, bought and installed a Guardian 8kw automatic LP generator. Right out of the box, the unit wouldn't run, but after several service visits and a mountain of parts, the generator was pronounced ready to go. Lo and behold, we go out to the house last weekend, the generator status panel lists an overcrank failure, and I've got frozen and blown pipes. My new slogan for Generac that I share with all my friends: Never trust your home to a Generac.

Why I Purchased A Generac Generator
During a recent strom we were without electric for 4-1/2 days. During this time a friend lent us a portable generator. We have a well and my husband is on an oxygenator which needs electric. We talked to our friend, who is an electrician, about putting in a generator to supply our home so that we did not have to worry anymore. He suggested the Gererac Guardian, so we purchased it. It is has been online for about two weeks and tests itself every Sunday at 6:00 pm. We can hardly hear it and feel very comfortable knowing that there is a good product and our backup. We have another friend that we talked to and he ordered one also is it is being setup know.

Initial Problem With A New 5870 Generator
I bought the Generac 5870 after going thru extended power outages from Hurricane Irene and then Storm Alfred.
The electrical hookup went smoothly as did the connection to my LP source.
When the unit was first started (Manual Start) without any electrical load, it ran for about 40 seconds and then shutdown due to an over speed fault even though I could see that the engine throttle was on the hard (non-adjustable) idle stop. A subsequent immediate start had an over speed trip within 5 seconds. After waiting about an hour, I tried to manually start it again, this time I was observing the rpm indication on the LCD panel. When the unit first started, it reached a engine speed of 3600 rpm and maintained it for about 30 seconds and then slowly increased to over 4200 rpm at which point it shut down due to an over speed. Again, the throttle was on the hard idle stop when this occurred.
I then put a 1500 watt load on the generator output and started it again. The unit ran fine with the load and maintained a constant engine speed of 3600 rpm. It was also obvious that the throttle was being regulated by the stepper motor and was off the idle stop. When I inspected the position of the throttle butterfly valve when the throttle was on the idle stop, it was apparent it was not closing all the way and there was no apparent way to adjust it.
After calling Generac customer support and explaining the problem, they referred me to an authorized Factory Service Dealer in my area. When the technician came out he followed his trouble-shooting procedures for over-speed trips as outlined in the Generac service manual. The service manual only pointed to the throttle stepper motor and linkage as the possible causes for an over speed. I explained to the technician that since the throttle was on the idle stop when no load was present, that the problem had to be related to the air box which contains the throttle butterfly valve and gas mixing chamber. After 5 hours of him checking voltages, calling the factory, and replacing the stepper motor, he finally talked to someone at the Generac factory that recommended that he replace the air box.
The new air box took about a week to come in. A visual inspection of the new air box showed that the throttle butterfly closed all the way when on the idle stop as opposed to the original air box which you could see the butterfly was partially open on the idle stop.
After the new air box was installed, the all functions on the unit worked perfectly fine. The new air box and labor were all totally covered by the Generac warranty. I was surprised that this kind of problem was not discovered by the supposed testing all units go thru before being shipped from the factory.

Never Again
Lived for six days without water, toilets, lights and refrigeration after Hurricane Irene. Generac 5870 delivered and install finished one day before the October snow nor'easter. It kicked on ten seconds after we lost power and ran for 60 hours until power was restored. It is quiet and burned .8galshour of propane. I could not be happier with this purchase from electric generators direct. By the way , the delivery was also perfect...delivered to the install location with no hassle.

The 5870 Generac Guardian is all it was promised! The only exception to all the stories was how easy it was to install. One customer was quoted in saying he had his hooked up in 10 hours. BS, it took me and a licensed electrician about 20 some hours of a lot of hard work, to get it up and going!
Once it was hooked up properly, it started immediately, and all the test runs were 120% I would recommend this product to any one. All my rural neighbors are in envy.

Just In Time For Hurricane Irene!
I had an older customer who wanted a backup generator so she wouldn't have to worry about the power going out. She was particularly concerned about having heat and having her emergency dialer work in case she had health problems.
We got the wiring all finished up and were just waiting for the gas company to install the tank (LP) and run the piping.
With hurricane Irene closing in, she was wanting it finished up before the weekend, so she had the gas company scheduled for Friday morning.
I got a call early Friday morning that my customer had been admitted to the hospital the night before. She wanted to see if I could go over to her place and let the gas man in so he could do his part. Of course I did and we got the generator fully up and operational. My customer was able to come home Friday night - apparently the event that had caused her to go the night before wasn't too serious.
By Sunday morning she was without regular power, but was happily enjoying her new generator. By Sunday evening her house was the only one in her small village that had any lights on.
Very satisfied!

Rural Area
I purchased a generator since living in a rural area the power goes out frequently for a couple hours at a time. My main concern was the water pump and freezer. Installation was straight forward. Jim was great, before purchasing I called with a few questions and he always answered them. The cost for the generator and automatic transfer switch was similar to the cost for the generator alone at the local home improvement stores.
I had been thinking about a generator for quite a while and then we had four multi-hour power failues within 10 days and I took the plunge.

Installation
I am very happy with my purchase. I spent much time looking at all the options and settled on the 5870 first because of price and also of reputation of company.
I did the installation myself as using a contractor would have added about $2,000.00 to the price. I am a good mechanic and electricity is my professional background so it was pretty easy. The total install, including the gas line took about 10 hours over several days. All went well. I ended up cutting the 30 foot cable as I only needed about six feet. The two molded connectors I spliced after cutting.Manual was pretty good also.

8kw Standby
Best thing I have ever bought for the house (8kw version). My basement will flood without power so this was a no brainer. It runs pretty much the whole house (no ac, no water heater or stove).
We are on a 220V well so we still have water, lights, heat, sump pump, internet and TV. I am not moving any time soon but if I was and my new house didn't have one it would be the first thing on the list.
I installed this unit myself ( I am not an electrician) but I do know electric and wiring. Install time was 2hrs including mounting transfer switch . Hooking up the LP was another hour the next day. Just like everything else the longer you wait the more it cost. I bought mine last year and it was $1929 with free shipping. Shipping from here was extremely fast.

Insurance Policy
I purchased my 8kw Generac from EGD. I was out of state when it arrived. The carrier placed it right in front of my garage door and not even the plastic was torn. I was truly amazed. The local store couldn't do that from four blocks away and they charge a delivery fee.
Next I un-crate it to find that there's much more than the units I was comparing it to locally. An additional two circuits plus the electronics.
Where I live, in northern New York, if you loose your power you can accumulate damage in a hurry. In the winter it's freezing pipes and any other time it can be a sump pump without power. The cost of a generator this size can be the insurance policy you're looking for. you don't even need to be home and it will sense the power loss, start itself, transfer the circuits to emergency power to protect the home, sense when normal power returns, transfer the circuits back to normal power and shut itself off.
Having gone through the ice storm of 1998 with a portable generator, I know the problems of finding gas. The gas stations had no power either. Dumping gas from lawn mowers was a fire hazard. Siphoning gas from 4 wheelers was a health hazard with benzene as an additive. Power cords and back feeding power lines - it was all dangerous. I’m done with that.
The system takes care of itself. Maintenance is simple. The home never needs to suffer damage or experience repairs once your home is degraded. The need of medical equipment during a power outage is a plus.
I have a great generator professionally installed. I did the math.

The engine started the 1st time he tried it. All systems checked out at end of installation. The unit sits outside of my backdoor. Very compact and neat looking unit. Very quiet running unit. Overall, I would recommend Electric Generators Direct to any potential buyer and also highl... more

Had It Installed
Shipped quickly, had lift gate delivery. No damage, accommodating driver.
Hired plumber I use to hook up the gas. Had a good local electrician to hook it up. Took a while to get the electrical work done, but the electrician figured it all out and used a Generac number to get tech support to plug in the codes. Took him a while to get to the right person, then all went well. He thought the Generac instructions were not complete enough. He didn't use the EGW number. He was already into the other number before I got it to him. MY fault. I think it would have been easier for him.
We left all my 220V circuits off the Generac panel. Can't run the AC, oven, range or dryer. I can use furnace, refrigerator, freezer, microwave, toaster oven, washer, TV, computer and everything else. My 2-1/2 ton AC draws 47 amps. This generator puts out 33 I believe.
I am satisfied with this "Essentials" generator. This will help my ill wife survive power outages. My heat-o-lator fireplaces have electric fans and all the heat goes up the chimney. During hot weather we will go to our finished basement and use fans. Power usually isn't often off long in the summer, not like the five days outage during an ice storm three years ago. Lots of people here were out longer.
This review may be too long, but it may illustrate some of the issues people consider when buying a standby generator.
The unit looks well laid out. I am impressed with the design. We'll see how it works when the power goes out.

Perhaps I should have waited until after the holidays to order, I.E. transportation delays, contractor delays etc., but today after activation and start up testing,I was flabbergasted as to the sophistication of your natural gas generator.
Everything and I mean everything works as advertised!!!
As an old retired Marine pilot of the Korean-Vietnam era I am well acquainted with the operational and maintenance handbooks of the various aircraft flown. Believe me when I say the Owner's Manual is the most succinct and well put together manual that I have come across since retiring from the Corps in 1972.
As you can see from my retirement date, I am no spring chicken but was easily able to follow your instructions.
I would recommend your generator to any family that needs a stable medical environment in the home!
Sincerely
Mac Echols

Love It
We live up in the mountains and every time we get rain, wind or snow the power goes out. I have spent 2 years dealing with a small portable generator but after the last outage which lasted 3 days I have had enough.
I ordered the Generac 5870 and have just had it installed. We tested it this weekend and it ran perfectly, plus I was able to have a lot more things working in my house than I could with the portable. Should have done this when I first moved in.

My Generac
What peace of mind this has given me. I live at the end of the grid and power goes out at least once a week, and in the winter is not fun... not anymore.
I have power always now and no more cold days or nights.
Thanks ElectricGeneratorsDirect.com. Your're great and so is your tech support team.

Unit Would Not Run
Hooked-up the unit and could not get the unit to run. A service tech came to the house and found that the air cleaner box had an air leak and was unable to repair, had to order a new air box assembly. Currently waiting for the new part to come-in and be installed. Hope it runs and operates good after that.

My Story
Generator was delivered in a timely fashion. Took awhile and money to get electrical and gas permits for installation and then signed off to use.
The generator does all it said it would do. I am pleased with it and the fact that I can go away and not have to worry about no heat, or loss of food in the freezer or refrigerator.
Plus, when I am home I will still be comfortable if I have no electricity.

Generator
I was going to purchase this model at a local electrical supply. Their price was $2700. What a joy to find it on your site for so much less.
It was shipped quickly, arrived in excellent condition. Everything was as described, there were no surprises.
It is now protecting the sumps pumps and emergency units at our business. I would recommend your site to everyone.

Why Send A Defective Product?
On having my new Generac started up by an authorized technician, it was found to have a defective governor, so would overspeed and shut down repeatedly.
The technician called the company and was told that they knew about the problem and would supply a replacement governor under warranty.
So why would a company ship a piece of equipment knowing that it had a defect? In the meantime, what happens if we have a power failure?
EGD RESPONDS: Generators are mechanical/electrical products, so things like his happen occasionally. The work should be done quickly as this type of part is readily available - then it should be years of trouble free protection from that next outage.
We checked with Generac, and they say they currently do not have any issues with this particular problem on the new models.
The Manufacturer's Warranty is in place to cover instances like this, where a component doesn't function properly, even after it's been tested at the factory.
