Q: I would prefer installing a concrete pad for the 5870 and would like to know how much wider should the concrete pad be then the unit on all sides? by Cecilia Blue from Maryland on April 11, 2012
A: There should be a 6" overhang from the generator for a good stable base. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Warranty how long? by Jose from California on March 26, 2012
A: These units have a 3 year manufacturers warranty. You can find the warranty information in the owner's manual which is available on our site under the specs link.
Q: Where do I get the installation instructions for the Generac Home Standby Generators? by T Wanamaker from New York on March 12, 2012
A: The unit comes with the installation instructions or you can find them on the Generac website. The instructions you get without the serial number will be basic.
Q: If I need more wire than the 30 feet supplied, can I splice what ever i need onto it? Also, are the circuit breakers standard ones if i ever need to replace one, or do i have to buy them from Generac? by Stanley Zydel from New York on February 10, 2012
A: The maximum length you can add is 15 feet as long as local code permits adding length (some do not). If you need to go beyond this length then the entire run of wiring needs to be changed because of the wire sizes/gauge.
Generac typically uses Siemens breakers in their switches which allows for replacement to be easy.
Please keep in mind that you cannot put larger amperage breakers in to replace smaller amperage breakers.
Please always consult with a certified electrician for proper installation and wiring.
Q: Hi Jim,is there any codes to how far from a window the standby generator must be.
Thank You Frank by Frank Gelsomino from Connecticut on January 24, 2012
A: NFPA 37 - 4.1.4 Engines Located Outdoors. Engines, and their weatherproof housings if provided, that are installed outdoors shall be located at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from openings in walls and at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from structures having combustible walls. A minimum separation shall not be required where either of the following conditions exist:
(1) The adjacent wall of the structure has a fire resistance rating of at least 1 hour. (2)*The weatherproof enclosure is constructed of noncombustible materials and has been demonstrated that a fire within the enclosure will not ignite combustible materials outside the enclosure.
The above code is referenced in NFPA 70 - Article 445 Generator Locations.
You do need to reference with your local inspector what the requirements are for your local city codes along with the requirements in your area for noncombustible materials.
Always consult with a certified electrician on all installation procedures and processes.
Thanks, Jeff by Jeff from Pennsylvania on January 19, 2012
A: Pipe diameter is based on the distance the generator is from the fuel source and Generac recommends the following which should be confirmed by your installing plumber.
Q: What is the percentage of THD for the 5871 Standby Generator? Is this figure somewhere in the specs pages or owners manual? by Ray Lacourse from Massachusetts on January 04, 2012
A: The THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) for the Generac Guardian Series Home Standby Generators is less then 5% which can be found in the Generac spec sheet. The link for the spec sheet is under our specs tab on the product page.
Q: What is a composite pad ? by CHARLES BLYTHE from North Carolina on April 08, 2011
A: The composite pad is a strong, lightweight mounting pad provided to simplify the installation. By including the pad with the generator, installation time and cost is reduced since a concrete base is no longer a requirement. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: I was looking at the generac 10k LP generator. Can you hook that up to the 20lb gas grill tanks . Do they sell a manifold to hook up multiple bottles? by R L from New Jersey on March 19, 2011
A: You cannot use a Grill Propane tank on a home standby generator. These units are designed for use with tanks of 100 gallon or larger to supply adequate fuel for long periods of time. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Hello Jim, do you have, or can you recommend stand-by generator installers for the Houston, Texas area? We are in the N.W. Houston area. by David Reece from Texas on February 13, 2011
A: Since we do not get involved in the installation process and since we ship all over the continental US we do not have a list of installers to provide. You can contact a local Generac dealer who may do installations at a reasonable price and will provide you with the best installation knowledge. You do not necessarily have to purchase a Generac generator from them to utilize their installation and they would be your resource for maintenance and warranty repairs.
Q: How far does a generator has to be from my house? by Jim from Massachusetts on February 04, 2011
A: The manufacturer recommends the back side of the unit to be set no less then 18 inches from any non-combustible surface and the sides of the unit need at least 36 inches for proper intake and exhaust.
Note: It is recommended to check with your city, county and state codes as they may differ from the manufacturers recommendations.
Q: Is this generator (Model 5884) a good choice for off grid solar system backup. 14kw not essential circuit? by Avery Edwards from Colorado on January 25, 2011
A: The Generac 5884 generator is specifically designed for emergency backup only and will not be warranted in an off-the-grid application.
Generac did come out with a new model specifically designed for off-the-grid and solar applications.
Q: What size battery do I need? by James Fritch from Pennsylvania on January 25, 2011
A: The battery is a Group 26R with 525 cold cranking amps - which is often difficult to find locally.
However, don't get too caught up in the specs. We already sized the battery for this model.
Click on the "Add 12V Start Battery" box when ordering.
The battery currently costs $89.99 and no shipping when you buy it with a standby generator.
We don't sell the batteries individually because they are hazardous materials that must ship via freight. If you bought one individually, it would cost more to ship than the battery is worth.
Since this generator is already shipping via semi-truck, we shrink wrap them together, and the battery tags along for the ride.
Q: What kind of oil comes in the generator, and when it is time to change it? Can I run Mobile 1 Synthetic 5W30 year round in central Oklahoma? by Ron Hopper from Oklahoma on January 24, 2011
A: The Generac standby generators are shipped with 5W30 oil in them and Generac does give the option to use 5W30 Synthetic in needed. The owner's manual covers all oil options and temperature ranges. Oil changes are determined by use and maintenance is also covered in the manual.
Q: Can this generator be anchored to the slab? If so, can you provide an anchor bolt layout by Gregg Deemer from Texas on January 21, 2011
A: Generac's model 5885, as with all of their standby generators, are anchored to the pallet at all 4 corners with special anchors which can be used to anchor the unit directly to your concrete base using concrete bolts. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Jim, We're interested in this Generac model 5870 and we were wondering under full load what size LP tank capacity should we consider and approximately how much run time could we expect. This will be used in a home application with backup to HVAC needs, a light circuit, sump pump refrigerator /freezer. 3,000 sq ft home. I know that there are many variables and I probably need to get you more information, however, I thought that this would be a good start. Thanks, Mike by Mike Mitrione from New Jersey on January 18, 2011
A: Proper sizing of the generator is to size it to 80% of the generators full capacity. A higher rated generator will operate comfortably at approximately 80% of its full capacity and will provide a margin of flexibility if the load increases in the future. So if your need is 8kW then you should look at a 10kW standby generator. Tank size is based on how much run time you want available when you lose power. The fuel usage is listed in the owner's manual which you can find our our website under the specs tab for each model. Normally a 100-Gal. tank or larger is best suited. Jim's Recommendation
The Guardian 8 kW Emergency Power System is the smallest home standby generator offered by Generac Power Systems with their OHVI industrial engine.
It starts automatically -- just the like the bigger versions -- and protects mission critical appliances from power failure.
Here's the major difference. The 8 kilowatt version can restore power to 10 mission-critical circuits, including a sump pump, refrigerator, furnace fans, lights and more.
The 17 kW version can restore power to 16 circuits, including a central air conditioner. The 8 kW version simply lacks the strength to turn over a central air conditioner.
If you can live without air conditioning during a power outage, it's a whole lot better than manually setting up and starting a portable generator.
Plus, it runs automatically even if you're home or not which allows those mission critical items to be powered, like your sump pump and avoiding that flooded basement.

Why I purchased a Generac Generator
During a recent strom we were without electric for 4-1/2 days. During this time a friend lent us a portable generator. We have a well and my husband is on an oxygenator which needs electric. We talked to our friend, who is an electrician, about putting in a generator to supply our home so that we did not have to worry anymore. He suggested the Gererac Guardian, so we purchased it. It is has been online for about two weeks and tests itself every Sunday at 6:00 pm. We can hardly hear it and feel very comfortable knowing that there is a good product and our backup. We have another friend that we talked to and he ordered one also is it is being setup know.

Initial Problem with a New 5870 Generator
I bought the Generac 5870 after going thru extended power outages from Hurricane Irene and then Storm Alfred.
The electrical hookup went smoothly as did the connection to my LP source.
When the unit was first started (Manual Start) without any electrical load, it ran for about 40 seconds and then shutdown due to an over speed fault even though I could see that the engine throttle was on the hard (non-adjustable) idle stop. A subsequent immediate start had an over speed trip within 5 seconds. After waiting about an hour, I tried to manually start it again, this time I was observing the rpm indication on the LCD panel. When the unit first started, it reached a engine speed of 3600 rpm and maintained it for about 30 seconds and then slowly increased to over 4200 rpm at which point it shut down due to an over speed. Again, the throttle was on the hard idle stop when this occurred.
I then put a 1500 watt load on the generator output and started it again. The unit ran fine with the load and maintained a constant engine speed of 3600 rpm. It was also obvious that the throttle was being regulated by the stepper motor and was off the idle stop. When I inspected the position of the throttle butterfly valve when the throttle was on the idle stop, it was apparent it was not closing all the way and there was no apparent way to adjust it.
After calling Generac customer support and explaining the problem, they referred me to an authorized Factory Service Dealer in my area. When the technician came out he followed his trouble-shooting procedures for over-speed trips as outlined in the Generac service manual. The service manual only pointed to the throttle stepper motor and linkage as the possible causes for an over speed. I explained to the technician that since the throttle was on the idle stop when no load was present, that the problem had to be related to the air box which contains the throttle butterfly valve and gas mixing chamber. After 5 hours of him checking voltages, calling the factory, and replacing the stepper motor, he finally talked to someone at the Generac factory that recommended that he replace the air box.
The new air box took about a week to come in. A visual inspection of the new air box showed that the throttle butterfly closed all the way when on the idle stop as opposed to the original air box which you could see the butterfly was partially open on the idle stop.
After the new air box was installed, the all functions on the unit worked perfectly fine. The new air box and labor were all totally covered by the Generac warranty. I was surprised that this kind of problem was not discovered by the supposed testing all units go thru before being shipped from the factory.

NEVER AGAIN
Lived for six days without water, toilets, lights and refrigeration after Hurricane Irene. Generac 5870 delivered and install finished one day before the October snow nor'easter. It kicked on ten seconds after we lost power and ran for 60 hours until power was restored. It is quiet and burned .8galshour of propane. I could not be happier with this purchase from electric generators direct. By the way , the delivery was also perfect...delivered to the install location with no hassle.

The 5870 Generac Guardian is all it was promised! The only exception to all the stories was how easy it was to install. One customer was quoted in saying he had his hooked up in 10 hours. BS, it took me and a licensed electrician about 20 some hours of a lot of hard work, to get it up and going!
Once it was hooked up properly, it started immediately, and all the test runs were 120% I would recommend this product to any one. All my rural neighbors are in envy.

Just In Time For Hurricane Irene!
I had an older customer who wanted a backup generator so she wouldn't have to worry about the power going out. She was particularly concerned about having heat and having her emergency dialer work in case she had health problems.
We got the wiring all finished up and were just waiting for the gas company to install the tank (LP) and run the piping.
With hurricane Irene closing in, she was wanting it finished up before the weekend, so she had the gas company scheduled for Friday morning.
I got a call early Friday morning that my customer had been admitted to the hospital the night before. She wanted to see if I could go over to her place and let the gas man in so he could do his part. Of course I did and we got the generator fully up and operational. My customer was able to come home Friday night - apparently the event that had caused her to go the night before wasn't too serious.
By Sunday morning she was without regular power, but was happily enjoying her new generator. By Sunday evening her house was the only one in her small village that had any lights on.
Very satisfied!

Rural area
I purchased a generator since living in a rural area the power goes out frequently for a couple hours at a time. My main concern was the water pump and freezer. Installation was straight forward. Jim was great, before purchasing I called with a few questions and he always answered them. The cost for the generator and automatic transfer switch was similar to the cost for the generator alone at the local home improvement stores.
I had been thinking about a generator for quite a while and then we had four multi-hour power failues within 10 days and I took the plunge.

Installation
I am very happy with my purchase. I spent much time looking at all the options and settled on the 5870 first because of price and also of reputation of company.
I did the installation myself as using a contractor would have added about $2,000.00 to the price. I am a good mechanic and electricity is my professional background so it was pretty easy. The total install, including the gas line took about 10 hours over several days. All went well. I ended up cutting the 30 foot cable as I only needed about six feet. The two molded connectors I spliced after cutting.Manual was pretty good also.

8kw Standby
Best thing I have ever bought for the house (8kw version). My basement will flood without power so this was a no brainer. It runs pretty much the whole house (no ac, no water heater or stove).
We are on a 220V well so we still have water, lights, heat, sump pump, internet and TV. I am not moving any time soon but if I was and my new house didn't have one it would be the first thing on the list.
I installed this unit myself ( I am not an electrician) but I do know electric and wiring. Install time was 2hrs including mounting transfer switch . Hooking up the LP was another hour the next day. Just like everything else the longer you wait the more it cost. I bought mine last year and it was $1929 with free shipping. Shipping from here was extremely fast.

INSURANCE POLICY
I purchased my 8kw Generac from EGD. I was out of state when it arrived. The carrier placed it right in front of my garage door and not even the plastic was torn. I was truly amazed. The local store couldn't do that from four blocks away and they charge a delivery fee.
Next I un-crate it to find that there's much more than the units I was comparing it to locally. An additional two circuits plus the electronics.
Where I live, in northern New York, if you loose your power you can accumulate damage in a hurry. In the winter it's freezing pipes and any other time it can be a sump pump without power. The cost of a generator this size can be the insurance policy you're looking for. you don't even need to be home and it will sense the power loss, start itself, transfer the circuits to emergency power to protect the home, sense when normal power returns, transfer the circuits back to normal power and shut itself off.
Having gone through the ice storm of 1998 with a portable generator, I know the problems of finding gas. The gas stations had no power either. Dumping gas from lawn mowers was a fire hazard. Siphoning gas from 4 wheelers was a health hazard with benzene as an additive. Power cords and back feeding power lines - it was all dangerous. I’m done with that.
The system takes care of itself. Maintenance is simple. The home never needs to suffer damage or experience repairs once your home is degraded. The need of medical equipment during a power outage is a plus.
I have a great generator professionally installed. I did the math.

Had It Installed
Shipped quickly, had lift gate delivery. No damage, accommodating driver.
Hired plumber I use to hook up the gas. Had a good local electrician to hook it up. Took a while to get the electrical work done, but the electrician figured it all out and used a Generac number to get tech support to plug in the codes. Took him a while to get to the right person, then all went well. He thought the Generac instructions were not complete enough. He didn't use the EGW number. He was already into the other number before I got it to him. MY fault. I think it would have been easier for him.
We left all my 220V circuits off the Generac panel. Can't run the AC, oven, range or dryer. I can use furnace, refrigerator, freezer, microwave, toaster oven, washer, TV, computer and everything else. My 2-1/2 ton AC draws 47 amps. This generator puts out 33 I believe.
I am satisfied with this "Essentials" generator. This will help my ill wife survive power outages. My heat-o-lator fireplaces have electric fans and all the heat goes up the chimney. During hot weather we will go to our finished basement and use fans. Power usually isn't often off long in the summer, not like the five days outage during an ice storm three years ago. Lots of people here were out longer.
This review may be too long, but it may illustrate some of the issues people consider when buying a standby generator.
The unit looks well laid out. I am impressed with the design. We'll see how it works when the power goes out.

Worth The Wait
Perhaps I should have waited until after the holidays to order, I.E. transportation delays, contractor delays etc., but today after activation and start up testing,I was flabbergasted as to the sophistication of your natural gas generator.
Everything and I mean everything works as advertised!!!
As an old retired Marine pilot of the Korean-Vietnam era I am well acquainted with the operational and maintenance handbooks of the various aircraft flown. Believe me when I say the Owner's Manual is the most succinct and well put together manual that I have come across since retiring from the Corps in 1972.
As you can see from my retirement date, I am no spring chicken but was easily able to follow your instructions.
I would recommend your generator to any family that needs a stable medical environment in the home!
Sincerely

Love It
We live up in the mountains and every time we get rain, wind or snow the power goes out. I have spent 2 years dealing with a small portable generator but after the last outage which lasted 3 days I have had enough.
I ordered the Generac 5870 and have just had it installed. We tested it this weekend and it ran perfectly, plus I was able to have a lot more things working in my house than I could with the portable. Should have done this when I first moved in.

My Story
Generator was delivered in a timely fashion. Took awhile and money to get electrical and gas permits for installation and then signed off to use.
The generator does all it said it would do. I am pleased with it and the fact that I can go away and not have to worry about no heat, or loss of food in the freezer or refrigerator.
Plus, when I am home I will still be comfortable if I have no electricity.

Why send a defective product?
On having my new Generac started up by an authorized technician, it was found to have a defective governor, so would overspeed and shut down repeatedly.
The technician called the company and was told that they knew about the problem and would supply a replacement governor under warranty.
So why would a company ship a piece of equipment knowing that it had a defect? In the meantime, what happens if we have a power failure?
EGD RESPONDS: Generators are mechanical/electrical products, so things like his happen occasionally. The work should be done quickly as this type of part is readily available - then it should be years of trouble free protection from that next outage.
We checked with Generac, and they say they currently do not have any issues with this particular problem on the new models.
The Manufacturer's Warranty is in place to cover instances like this, where a component doesn't function properly, even after it's been tested at the factory.
