Q: I just want to make sure this item works the way I think it does before I order it. I want to control an electric hot water heater that is on the other side of the house from the transfer switch location. The water heater's branch circuit comes from a subpanel also located on the far side of the house. So can I locate the contactor near the water heater; run low voltage cable (only) between the contactor and the transfer switch (50-60') and assume that the normally open contacts are closed whenever utility power is present?
by Rob Saccardo from Massachusetts on November 21, 2013

A: The installation that you have described is exactly how these devices are intended to operate. Generac advises that these devices are installed as close to the electrical load that it will support as possible. The contacts are NC during utility operation and will become NO for five minutes upon the initial restoration of generator power.

You can find more information on this within the Owner's Manual which is provided in the following link;

Q: I can see the 6186 is a 2-pole contactor, which is required to disconnect both phases of a 240V load like an AC compressor. Are the contacts of the module "form C" or just simple "form A" contacts?
by Tom Reynal from Texas on October 14, 2013

A: Thank you for your inquiry....

Form designations are fairly old and rarely used now. The Generac PMM modules consist of a 2-Pole NO (Normally Open) relay and rated to control:

*Current - 50A resistive or 40A inductive
*Voltage - 600 VAC
*Motor Rating - 7-1/2 HP @ 240 VAC
*LRA - 240A @ 240 VAC
*Coil Voltage - 24 VAC (6.5 VA Holding)
*Enclosure UL type 3R

Q: If you use more than one PMM #6199 do you need additional 24 vokt transformers for them?

by James Hunt from Arkansas on August 19, 2013

A: Only one 24V start kit is required. So if you need more then one PMM you would initially purchase the PMM with start kit and then purchase the individual PMM's - Model 6186 alone. (Up to 3 Additional PMM's for a total of 4).

Initial PMM Model - 6199 (Includes 24V Start Kit)

Additional PMM Model - 6186 (Up to 3)

Pmm For My Ac
Installed a pm on an AC unit. AC was a 18 seer and I had no access to the air handler to break the circuit to the compressor. (Not a simple two wire contactor).

The unit worked great. The only thing I don't understand is why the pmm is normally open. The contacts should be normally closed since 99% of the time there is no outage. The way it works now the coil is always energized and I feel this will cause the unit to wear out quicker. I realize this will require modifications to the... more
