So I bought the 5947 kit, the batter warmer & electrical was no problem to install. I cannot figure out exactly where to stick the block heater pad, the generator has the 999cc engine. The pad seems to fit on the top center of the block but I am just not sure if that is exactly the right place to stick the thing. The kit did not come with a picture of where to put it and want to make sure it is in the right place the first time since I think the adhesive back is a one shot deal.
Can you please help?

A: Henry,
Below is a link to the installation guide from Generac which has a picture at the bottom of the page and shows exactly where the block heater goes. Please make sure to follow the instructions exactly or you will have difficulty with it sticking.
Q: I have a Generac Guardian Series 5502 and need a cold weather kit. Since this is a discontinued model. What cold weather kit is compatible with my model? by Connie from Minnesota on January 22, 2011
A: The following model is designed for all air cooled Generac standby generators (2008 to 04/01/2010).
Q: Hi Jim, I live in Alaska and own a 5875 20KW Home standby Generac. I need to get a cold weather kit. I am looking at the Generac Cold Weather Kit for 14-20kW Home Standby Generators (992/999cc). First, is this the correct product for my generator and second, is it a "plug and play' install?
I understand I will need to change the oil to synthetic 5W30 so my guess is I'll need a maintenance kit as well. The generator has less than 3 hours on it.
Many thanks,

A: That is the correct cold weather kit for the Generac Guardian 20kW model 5875 (or 5887) and it is a plug and play type unit, however, it is recommended by Generac to have a certified electrician install it due to the high voltage connection.

Jim's Recommendation
Cold weather kits are specific to your generator. This one ranks top on our list because it is designed for the Generac generators 14-20kW, which are most of our best sellers. This kit will help you get ready for that winter blast!

Cold Weather Kit Complete Waste of Money
I love my Generac. But the cold weather kit has everything to be desired. I installed it, following Generac's instructions with sanding and alcohol, at the beginning of a most mild winter 09/2011. I checked my unit a few days ago and neither electrode was where they were placed. The adhesive is defective. The engine-block warmer fell off, and the battery warmer also was no longer stuck to the battery. The cold start kit was purchased with my generator purchase, and Generac informed me that the warranty for this $279 accessory was only 90 days from the date of purchase.
Here's The Response From Electric Generators Direct:
Per our earlier phone conversation, unfortunately there is nothing we can do at this point regarding the adhesive failure on the crankcase heater from your Generac cold weather kit. We can suggest however to try using a very high temp spray adhesive with a minimum temperature rating of 400 degrees (F). 3M makes a very good product that may do the job for you. We apologize for the problem and hope that our suggestion will fix it.

EGD Responds: "Since the seals are new on the roof, the generator top can be sometimes difficult to latch but with pressure applied to the roof top the latch should be able to be locked. The locked can also be adjusted by loosening the locknut inside the unit.
The cold weather kit assists with keeping the oil warm for ease of starting and keeps the battery warm for the frigid temperatures. The cost is reflective of the technology for automatic temperature sensing in the material where a mechanical/digital activation thermostat is not required.
The generator top does not lock properly. When you use the key to lock the top, it does not catch. Secondly the cold weather kit does not appear to provide the essentials for the cost. If you have a strong battery (2year guarantee), what is the purpose?

Delivery was prompt and the generator works great. The only problem is my battery warmer fried and can't get ANYONE to even respond (5 weeks and counting). I'm very afraid of service issues with Generac. Winter is almost here and now I had to purchase a different battery warmer to use until I can get this solved if ever. Also had issue with failed to start on an exercise once. But hasn't happened again.

Generator Purchase
I have had a portable gas generator for years since our vacation home is in a rural area. After a 4 day outage this summer and dealing with all the hassles and limitations of the portable, I decided it was time to install a permanent propane, smart-switch unit.
The Generators Direct site is easy to use and VERY informative to efficiently help determine type and size desired. The ordering process was hassle-free and subsequent 2 day delivery went without a hitch. The unit was installed within a week of ordering by my electrician.
As fate would have it, we experienced a 6 hour outage the first night after install. The lights went out and then came back on about 10 seconds later. I assumed it was just another electric utility "flicker" but I quickly realized that the generator was up running rather than the electric utility on. With the outage occurring so soon after install, it fully confirmed our purchase decision. Thanks for making the process so logical and smooth.

A squirrel gave his life today and we were able to really test our new generator! It was wonderful - we were able to continue what we were doing without interruption. We had a TV, a computer and a washing machine going plus overhead fans (didn't need the AC, but am confidant it would have come on).
It works great, BUT our electrician says it should have a back panel for easier access. (He dropped a screw that took 'forever' to retrieve!).
It is a little loud - Everyone nearby now knows we have a generator, but it isn't so loud as to keep you awake.
We can't speak to the cold weather kit, as it is now spring!
