Q: I just received the generator I purchased from you (Generac GP5500 - 5500 Watt Portable Generator) and it comes with a bottle of oil. It does not say on the bottle what type it is. 30 weight or 10w30? Do you know so that it is the proper oil to use for the current temperature. Thanks, Larry by Larry from Ohio on March 26, 2011
A: Generac uses 10W30 in their kits that get sent with the portable generators. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Jim: I want to buy a protective cover for my Generac 5623 6500W portable generator (33.5" x 26.5" x 27.5"). Any recommendations for a cover that will fit this model of generator? by John G. Smith from Maryland on February 27, 2011
A: The Classic Accessories Large Cover will fit up to 8000 watts. We have tested these covers on all of the Generac GP model generators and other manufacturers.
Note: It is important to not include the wheels when measuring the width as the generator covers are not meant to cover them.
EGD Responds: Rough idle usually is the result of Bad/Stale Gasoline. Gasoline with 10% ethanol can become stale within 2 weeks of purchasing it. Also make sure you're using a fuel additive to keep the gasoline fresh.
I have had two problems! When the generator is first started it lopes badly. After a few minutes of warmup time the lopining is reduced but not eliminated! I am concerned that the erratic speed might cause voltage fluctuations and cause damage to my appliances. The handle does not have have the locking button. Both difficulties have been reported to Generac yesterday. I am waiting for an answer.

Good & Bad
easy to buy, fast delivery, easy to assemble but it didn't work. The part that holds the spark plug was broken. Called for service, was referred to 2 places. I took the unit to a service center and there it sits. With calls back and forth it was confirmed the work has been completed BUT the service center will not release the unit until it gets confirmation that the service is a covered item. If we loose power, we will go down to the service center, pay the tab and take the unit home but all is well in NH as far as snow storms go. Oh, thats right, it is still the middle of February....................who knows what will happen in the next 2 weeks. We had snow on Halloween and were out for 4 days. Hmmmmm

GP6500E
After the October Northeast snow storm and 7 days without power I spent several weeks researching generators. Went to many different web sites and stores and decided EGD was a good choice to buy from. The process of ordering the generator was no problem and the site was easy to use.
When it was delivered everything went fine, I unwrapped the generator and had it assembled and running in about 45 minutes. I ran it about 45 minutes with a load on it and it ran nice and smooth. I actually thought it was very quiet, much quieter than my snow blower. One last note, I did get the lift gate service and unless you have a loading dock or 3 guys to get it off the truck you would not be able to unload this thing.

Nice Quiet Generator
I bought this machine to replace a troy built, this one is bigger with electric start and a lot quieter than the old one. It was delivered and I set it up in a few minutes added some gas and pushed the start switch it started right up and was nice and smooth, quiet and a nice quality sounding engine. I can hardly wait for an outage to give it a run!

My Review
First of all Jim at Electric Generators Direct was very helpful in getting me the right generator and authorization to pick the unit up at R&L Carriers terminal in Hatfield, Pa. I live on a no outlet street and it would have been impossible to get a tractor trailer anywhere near the house. The delivery time was right on time and no problems with R&L Carriers. Dan at R&L in Hatfield was also very helpful for me to get the unit at his facility. By the time I got checked in at the office and came back out the dockman was waiting for me to load the unit.
The Generac model 5941 was a very easy assembly, took about 15 minutes. It looks like it is a quality unit. I haven't been able to use it as of yet, but having lost power for five days in the October northeast snowstorm this is the best insurance policy any one can have in an emergency. My electrical contractor will be installing the transfer switch next week and I’m looking forward to trying the unit out for the first time.
Overall it was an excellent experience dealing with electric generators direct.com and R&L Carriers. I would highly recommend electric generators direct, and also Generac generators to friends and family.

Selection assistance by this company was very helpful. The unit was shipped before the projected date, and was delivered without any problems. The generator was installed by an electrician. Starting info supplied was very good, pressed the button and it started on the first press and supplied power to all designated areas. I have already recommended this unit and company.

LIVES UP TO ALL THE POSITIVE REVIEWS
After suffering through 2 recent major storms without power for days, I bought the Generac GP6500E from EGD after doing extensive research. The generator arrived AHEAD of schedule...I was kept fully informed by EGD of its arrival date. The delivery gentleman carried the Generac into my garage and waited while I inspected it for damage (none). After reading over and following the assembly and start-up instructions, I had the generator running within 20 minutes (started up on the first press of the electric start). So far it has run extremely well. Although some reviews show concern that the GP engine is not made in the U.S. time will tell if that makes a difference. My daughter has a Generac 4000XL....15 years old. Since August it has run flawlessly through 5 and 7 day power outages. Speaks well for Generac products.

Wife Started it the first time No Problem
Started by ordering a 5940 without an electric start. Call, and the staff was fantastic, I was able to upgrade without a problem.
Received shipment ahead of schedule by half a month (Item was out of stock when I ordered it). Assembly was super easy, instructions are clearly written. Just to prove a point I asked the wife to start it for the first time. She followed the instructions, on the gas tank and it started and ran on the first shot. Measured the power output and it was spot on. I was able to run everything I needed to in the house and my HAM radios.
I would recommend this generator and "Electric Generators Direct" over and over again.
Thank You

The generator seems to fit my needs perfectly. I purchased an EMERGENCY unit since it will only receive limited duty but will have excellent care and maintenance. I do expect longevity of this unit using it as stated, time will tell. The customer service at EGD is nothing short of the best I've dealt with. Kris is extremely knowledgeable, polite, and most helpful with any and all questions asked of him.
The Century cable is capable of doing what it was designed to do.
The Transfer switch is a neat package with many options to suit most anyone's needs.
The Reliance PC3040 also purchased appears ok, but there are issues that are being addressed ongoing. They (Reliance) also have an excellent service orientated dept. represented by Nick who is working on these issues with me. Hopefully all will work out in the final analysis.

Pass On The Generac Brand
EGD Responds: Due to Hurricane Irene and the Halloween weekend snowstorm, Generac has seen the highest demand for it's products in the history of the company. They have been experiencing extended lead times on all of their products and parts.
If you want a Generator that you have to wait months for parts..then Generac is your brand. Bought a 6500E at the start of September had it for about 2 days and had to bring into the shop for repairs due to leaking gas tank and hour meter not working. It has been in the shop for 6 weeks due to BACK ORDERED PARTS!
How does one of the biggest generator manufactures in the world not stock parts for their generators? Have called Generac 3 times to find out when they expect the parts but no one seems to know anything, my repair guy cant even get an answer from them they just keep giving us the run around. So in short buyer beware...I just hope you get a good one so you don't have to wait around for months to get parts. I guess I should have bought 2 so I could get the parts that I need off the other.

For the electric start which is a bit of a joke. The electric start battery does not re-charge while the generator runs. More the point, it doesn't always spin the engine up to sufficient RPM to start it. Having said that, the generator is great. Got it just weeks ago and then the freak snow storm hit the Northeast. We started it up and it ran - - mostly non-stop - - for five days straight. One fill of the tank lasts as long or longer than stated in the specs. Like all gasoline fueled generators it is loud, but outside a sealed house the noise is barely an issue in exchange for heat and light.

Easy, Easy!
I received the box containing the Generator three weeks ago and it took me more time to read the instructions than put the unit together, everything fit perfectly and all the pieces were in the kit.
I decided not to put the oil in until I needed the unit so I waited. We were hit by the late October snowstorm in the Northeast this weekend, rolled out the unit, put in the oil and gas, hit start and bingo electricity.
Like I said, easy, easy.

My generator came broken. It must be from the manufacturer because the box was fine. A replacement part is being sent but I have to fix it. Not happy

My Generator Review
My GP6500E was delivered quickly with good communication from the shipper. I assembled the unit in about 20 minutes, (I was missing one cotter pin and had to get one out of my cotter pin drawer it took me 5 minutes to find that. otherwise it would have been only 15 minutes to assemble, NOT a big deal.) I added the oil and gas, hit the start switch, low and behold it was running and I had electricity.
Now to wire up the transfer switch.. It will be and easy task. Very happy with the product and service so far. I will be able to power more than I had planned initially.

My First Generator & Manual Transfer Switch
This was my first generator and first manual transfer switch, I waited a bit long time for the panel because it was on back order. I finally got the panel and it was simple to install. I removed the breakers that came with the panel and installed my own.
The only problem that I had with this panel was with the 3/4 inch flexible plastic conduit that came with the panel, first off I couldn't attach the conduit to the panel. It was really really hard to attach that to the panel. So hard that I couldn't attach it, and don't let me start on pulling the wires through the conduit. I don't think the company even tried to see if it even fit.
I gave up and ran out and got a 1 inch plastic conduit and elbows, everything fit in beautifully. And even have room to run more wires if I have to. I used that flex conduit for my generator wire coming from my outside outlet box. I had to really fight with that conduit to attach it to the panel. For the amount of money I paid for the panel. You would think they would have gave you the 1 inch conduit. But other then that, the transfer switch works great.

My New Generac GP6500E
I received my new generator about a month ago, and today was the first chance I had to unpack and start it up. It runs quieter than I expected, and started right up. FANTASTIC! Not one glitch. The only thing that I am having to work on is finding a "rattle" which bugs me. I would suggest this generator to anyone looking for one.

Noise Rating - Almost As Quiet As A Honda
Generac does not post the noise rating for any of their models, however, this unit is almost as quiet as the similar Honda model. We rented the Honda EM6500 during Irene and really liked how quiet it was, but the price point is a bit steep. This GP6500E is just as quiet and easy to start, both manually (my wife started it) and with the electric start.

Satisfied Customer
So far everything is good. Installed the transfer switch with no problems. I have done a good deal of electrical work so it was fairly simple to install. The generator is a little noisier than I expected but we will adjust.
I cannot say enough good things about R&L Carriers. I was unable to be home on the delivery date so I went to pick it up at their location. Unfortunately, there was some confusion on the arrival date. I received a call from a manager apologizing for "their" mistake and offered to make it a priority to have it delivered as soon as it arrived.
I told him that I would not be home and would pickup at the terminal. When I arrived at the terminal these people jumped through hoops to get my generator and loaded it on my truck. Along with apologizes for the delay. Great people. The dock worked would not even accept a tip.
Overall the whole purchase has been really good. Kudos!

I orderd 2 of these generators for me and a friend. As soon as we received them we put them together and as soon as we pushed the button, they started right up. A friend of mine, an electrician, told me these were the best one's to buy. He was 100% right and as soon as he saw them, he ordered one for himself. I would recommend this gen. and this company to anyone who asks me where i got them. Right now, I'm going to order the cover for it. Thank You for your fast & prompt service.

New Generator
The purchace was easy and very fast shipping. Easy assembly. Unit started right up after assembly. I hooked it up to a reliance 6 circuit manual transfer switch. The test run went without a hitch. Haven't had to really put it through a true test during a real power failure but I don't expect any problems. So far So good.

Received Generator Just In Time
I ordered my Generac GP6500E last week and could not have been more pleased with the ordering or delivery process. R&L Carriers wheeled the generator into my garage, unpacked it and helped me check to make sure there was no damage - which there wasn't.
The real story is that two days after the generator came, we had a huge storm and were without power for a couple of days. I hadn't even started it before I needed it! But the little bit of assembly was very easy and the Generac started right up (love the electric start). It ran great the whole time and allowed us to keep the refrigerators, sump pump and several other items running. The generator wasn't overly loud and functioned flawlessly.

It's the truth! Couldn't be easier
Recently, after an electric storm left us without power for three days, we swore, (ok, I swore) that we would never be without power for an extended period of time again. My husband and I both did some research and although this was a large on-line purchase for us, we decided o give it a shot. The sales staff was helpful and delivery was when we were told it would be. We took it out of the box (ok, he did) popped the wheels on, filled it up and it roared to life. We are very satisfied with our purchase and are ready for the next storm! Couldn't have been easier, thanks!

Great Job!
I ordered my generator this spring, and received it within a few days. A June tornado took out our power lines in the remote area where we live. My generator was connected to a transfer switch provided by the local power company. We switched off the 220 breakers, but with all the 110 breakers on, we managed for 2 days without any problems. Our eight ceiling fans kept us very comfortable. Our generator was never in a bind and the the gas consumption was very low. We are very pleased!!!!

Hurricane Ready
It has been a long, long wait, but I finally received my generator on 5-17-11. I ordered it on 3-22-11 and a few days later I was informed that it was out of stock and that the shipping date had been delayed. A few weeks later, I received another notice of an additional delay in availability. I was not in a great hurry, as hurricane season starts on the 1st of June, but I needed it sometime before storms become active. I had previously installed a generator power transfer connection, so I was ready to go when the generator arrived. We were out of power for 15 days back in 2004 when hurricane Charlie made a direct hit on our house on Friday the 13th. So, we wanted to be ready this year, finally.
The Generac GP6500E is now up and running and has been tested under house load. Everything we need to run, with the exception of central air, are powered without a problem. They even supplied an AC/DC adapter transformer and connection on the generator front panel for charging the battery. Being a retired electrical engineer, I would recommend charging the battery once a month for about 8 hours. This should keep the battery ready to jump into action whenever you need it. However, the manual pull starter works well also, so, no worries there either.
I live on a street that is about 1800 feet long that terminates with a cul-de-sac in front of my house. The R & L rig, that delivered my unit, was a full sized tractor trailer. He drove right up to the end to unload the unit and then backed all the way to the beginning of our street to get out of our neighborhood. The driver was very nice and had no complaints. My generator was delivered in perfect condition without as much as a mashed corner on the box. You could tell that R & L treats their cargo with care. They are an excellent trucking company.
I am very happy with my purchase. This generator is a well built, quality unit and I am sure anyone else who orders this generator will be well pleased.

Installation Success
All purchases showed up quickly and in good condition. The pre-wired transfer switch w/ instructions were easy to follow and thorough to make the hook up with the main panel selected circuits complete.
After completion of the installation I did a test of the whole unit and we now feel more confident of not having a complete power failure in an emergency.
