Q: I own a GP8000E. Which cover should I purchase? by Ron from Michigan on March 02, 2011

Q: Jim: I want to buy a protective cover for my Generac 5623 6500W portable generator (33.5" x 26.5" x 27.5"). Any recommendations for a cover that will fit this model of generator? by John G. Smith from Maryland on February 27, 2011
A: The Classic Accessories Large Cover will fit up to 8000 watts. We have tested these covers on all of the Generac GP model generators and other manufacturers.
Note: It is important to not include the wheels when measuring the width as the generator covers are not meant to cover them.
Q: What is the difference between the generac 5747 and the generac 5681 besides the price? Also what is max kw and running kw on both. thanks need answer before ordering. by John Maurer from Illinois on February 19, 2011
A: In regards to your question, the XG8000E (5747) is designed mainly for construction site use but can be used in residential applications. The GP8000E (5681) is designed for the homeowner. Both models have the exact same engine and alternator with the only difference being the frame construction and the looks. Both units offer 8,000 watts running and 10,000 watts surge capacity.
A higher rated generator will operate comfortably at approximately 80% of its full capacity and will provide a margin of flexibility if the load increases in the future. Note: A certified electrician should be consulted for proper sizing and installation of any generator.

Q: Where do I go to get a new battery? by Diane Yellen from New York on January 21, 2011

Q: How does this generator start in cold weather with the electric start? What is the difference between OHV engine & Generac's OHVI engine? by Daryl Hammond from Ohio on January 17, 2011
A: Portable generators are normally stored inside and the B&S 30471 comes with a float style battery charger which is plugged into the generator when not in use. This allows the generator battery to have a sufficient charge when the generator is needed to start.
An OHV (Overhead Valve) engine is compact designed and generally makes the unit operate quieter. The Generac OHVI (Overhead Valve Industrial) engine is built robustly with premium power and high performance and comes with a fully pressurized oil lubrication system and spin-on filter. by Jim, Product Expert

GP8000E
Similar to Kens post my GP8000E got us by with awesome results during the recent storms here in the Boston Area. for 5 days my Generator cranked away and my house was the only warm place to be for that time period. We did Dishes,Laundry, had the TV with DVD running and all the other essentials. We had to balance our Watts usage as my house if 4K SQF but we were never without. I bought my GP from this site 2 years ago and it was the best choice I could have made. In a few days it will go in for its first service (More for Maintenance at an authorized Generac repair shop) as there are many hours on it. We loose power all the time -:(. The only downside was the electric start (and I thinks its the battery) never seemed to work at all. Upside is one pull even in the coldest weather starts right up...Just wished there was a trade up program. Would really like 15k Watts...Bigger and Badder....

Awesome Generator
Bought this generator 2 yrs ago because of multiple extended power outages. Just experienced a power outage that lasted 4 days and this generator ran flawlessly. Generator is hooked up to breaker panel by an electrician with a breaker-interlock-switch so I have use of my whole panel.
Generator was able to handle my whole house (2400 sq ft). Ran my well pump, gas water heater, gas furnace, gas dryer, gas stove, and multilple lights, outlets etc. Did loads of laundry and dishwasher loads. Generator ran continuously for 4 days except when filling gas tank and it ran smoothly and never had a problem handling loads. Very happy with this generator. Generator is awesome. Was also very happy with Generators Direct. Generator arrived very promptly after ordering.

Great Quality really made in U.S.
I am very happy with everything about this generator. I bought it about 3 months ago from Generators Direct here. Shipping was great. Assembly was easy. It starts really easy on one or two pulls max. Also the electric start works great.
Battery was even charged when I got it, so no problems. Construction is very sturdy. I've got about 10 hours on it, just testing it out and it works as advertised. I feel good helping support American workers, and product is great.
Idles like a champ. I'll come back to this post if things turn sour for some reason, but that seems unlikely at this point.

Great Generator, Great Price & Great Company
I bought this generator in August 2010 to protect against power outages. In 2009 we were without electricity for over 100 hours. With a business being run from my home, I can't afford to be "out of business" for that long of a period. After receiving this generator, had an electrician wire a transfer switch for the house. Ran this generator about 10 minutes every month since I have had it. Always started right up and ran very well.
During the "Storm of the Century" (Feb 2, 2011) we received about 1" of ice and had downed trees and power lines. Our power was out at the house for 12 hours. When you live in the country and have a well that means not only no electricity, but no water as well!
I took the generator outside and hooked it to the transfer switch. Fired up the generator (20 degrees) and it started right up. Switched the system in the house over to the generator and it ran the water pump, furnace, refrigerators and freezers and all of the computers and phone systems in my office.
The generator ran for 12 hours and never surged or missed a beat! My business never missed a beat or a clients phone call or e-mail!
Great generator, Great price! And, a Great company to deal with!!
I have recommended this generator to several of my powerless neighbors!!

GP8000E generator
I purchased it from ElectricGeneratorsDirect around Oct 16 2010 and it was drop shipped within 3 days. It has an issue with the gas gauge. It does not register the existence of gas in the tank but there are no leak issues. The battery and electric start work well. The unit starts easily with the rope as well.
I placed a wall timer to feed a charge to the battery through the supplied charger for one hour per day. I have used it twice for two outages I've experienced for two hours per outage and experienced no issues with starting or operation.
Mine is wired to be switched in through a transfer switch and I have a power return alert (Which I reviewed here and also got from ElectricGeneratorsDirect) to inform me when utility power returns. I use gas that is protected by"Stabil".
The unit provides sufficient power to allow me to finish drying clothes with my 5600W electric dryer and also provides sufficient power to run the rest of the household. I simply need to be aware of my total power usage and try to keep it below 7200 Watts which is the maximum that it can deliver from it's 230 v receptacle. It provides nice piece of mind in case of a power outage.
Overall a very positive buying experience.

No story yet because the generator will be used when ever there is a power failure and happy to say that we have not yet had any failures of our electrical service.
The generator looks beautiful setting there in the front of my garage. I start it about once a week to make sure that it will perform OK if needed. It starts immediately and runs smoothly. No problems so far!

My Second Generac
This generator replaced a ten year old 5k Generac that still works great but it's old and has provided me with many hours of electricity.
When I picked up the new generator at the shippers dock there was no pallet under the generator and the bottom was pretty much in tatters but the generator was no worse for wear minus a bit of missing paint on the bottom.
The only assembly required was installing the handles, front bumper and the wheels and that only took about fifteen minutes.
It came with enough oil to fill it.
I turned on the gas valve, choked the engine then pressed the start toggle and it started within two seconds. I only let it run for about twenty minutes then let it cool off while looking for leaks and found none.
Next I let it run for about an hour starting with nothing but a single lamp connected and ending with two lamps, a fan and an electric heater.
It performed flawlessly.
I haven't had it long enough to really give it a good review but it has performed as advertised, so far. I hope it's as good as the old one in the long run.

My Generac GP8000E runs my furnace blower (for 3600 sq ft house), refrigerator, 240V 2 HP lifter pump (sump for pumping sewage up to sewer line), and many lights all at the same time, with no problem with the starting current of those devices, even on the lifter pump. I'm very happy with that.
It's compact, easy to maneuver around on the wheels, runs well, and looks very well built. Noise is about like a gas lawn mower, and it was about as easy to start with the pull cord as a lawn mower -- quite easy. I ran it for several hours yesterday during a power outage.
The electric start didn't work out of the box. I suspect that the battery just needs charging, but we'll see. It turns the starter, but there is no engagement and no cranking of the engine. No problem, though, since it's so easy to pull start.
One suggestion in the manual. It says to fill oil to the point indicated on the dipstick. There is no dipstick. The oil filler plug has small printing that says fill to the bottom of the threads -- it should say that in the manual, too. Puzzling over how much oil to add (until Dad noticed the writing on the plug) was the longest step in getting it ready to go. Heh!
My Dad is buying the same unit for himself from Electric Generators Direct based on how well everything went.

Pretty Good Generator
My only disappointment was that the battery was dead when I got the generator.
It started fairly easily with the rope once I got gas in the carburetor, but then I had to find a dealer to get a new battery from (which Generators Direct did reimburse me for).
I had to use this generator during a recent power outage and it worked perfectly and held a very steady 120 volts

Easy To Install Device
After hooking up a new transfer switch and running a power line to the generator's home, I figured it would top off my efforts to install a utility power return alert. I searched over Google and the THP108 is the only thing I could find that meets my needs.
Well, it is perfect in that it is just what I was thinking of. Interestingly, it has a pending patent. Anyway, installing it took all of 10 minutes and it works great. It may not be loud enough to wake me up since it is in the basement, but I will hear it if I'm not sleeping anywhere in the house.
For $40.00 why not top off your efforts of installing a transfer switch and power line. Alternatively, I'd have to keep checking the street lights (assuming it is night time) or go and see if the LCD display on my ($) power meter is active which is a kind of hassle. So I very much like this thing.

When the generator arrived, I ran it a few hours for break in, then with the "assistance" of an electrician friend, we shut down the power, started up the generator (always started right away with the electric start), hooked it into the power panel and started to throw switches.
It easily ran everything (excepting heat pump, dryer, and stove) and we turned on lots of lights, TV, etc. Even cycled the microwave just to see what it would handle.
One confusing factor was the interface between the furnace and the heat pump. At first the furnace would not operate (with the heat pump off). However, after about 5 minutes it went on. It takes that long for the controls to cycle through. When you restore normal power, it also takes about 5 minutes for the heat pump to go on.
One small complaint--the muffler seems small--somewhat noisy. However, if power is out, all the neighbors will have their generators running, so probably isn't a problem.
I'm very pleased with everything.

BACK-UP POWER FOR HURRICANES
Wanted enough power to run an aquarium, refrigerator, TV, computer, lights, a fan and a room AC. I think this will work.
I was a little concerned about ordering online and shipping, but no one in the area handled the unit I wanted.
This has been a great experience. Easy to order, delivered to my driveway in about a week and arrived in perfect condition.
Following instructions, very easy set-up and start-up. Unit looks top quality in every way (I like that it has a steel gas tank) and I am very glad that I ordered from Electric Generators Direct.

A gem!
Took a while to receive as the delivery company was an interline carrier and my phone number did not make it through the billing process.
But once received, I pulled it out of the box, set it up, put oil in it, and it fired on the first pull and started on the second.
I have used it a couple of times so far constructing our new home. No issues, works fine, a gem!

Highly recommend product and EGD
I was talked into buying a Generac generator by conversing with a sales representative at a big box store.
Your price was $50 better and you didn't charge me shipping. The item was delivered right to my shop with lift-gate service.
I did the test run on it last week and it works like it's supposed to. Highly recommend this product and this distributor to others. Delivery was 3 days after purchase.

Worth it
I feel that the generator I purchased from you was worth the final price, and worth waiting for until you had it back in stock.

Starting in the cold
I bought a electric-start 8000 watt Generac generator last Fall, and it started fine in warm weather but when it got
down to approximately 10 to 15 degrees, it would not start by using the electric start.
I'm an old retired citizen and bought the one with the electric start because I have arthritis in my shoulders. So, I called my installer about this and showed him what it was doing and he took it to a factory rep.
They put it in their building, and when they tried to start it was fine because it was warm in the building.
Now the Generac company won't do anything to rectify my problem, so I'm stuck with something I will not be able to use this winter if I need it.
It would have been only used if the power went out; luckily it didn't this winter.
EGD RESPONDS: Batteries discharge very quickly in cold weather; you may want to keep yours indoors on a trickle charger so it's ready when you need it.
Also, using a synthetic oil in your generator will help it start quickly and easily, even in the cold.
