Generator Review
Absolute JUNK!
This is my 3rd Generac 5000 Power Plus - proudly made in USA (as it says under the name)
1. Dismantles itself (due to vibration) - every time a new screw or nut falls out.
2. Gives me 170 V in 120 outlets.
3. Manual start broke in every one of them.
4. Very loud.
5. Unreliable.
6. Each one died within first 100 hours of sporadic use (always stored inside)
Why having three? - first was purchased (stator died), second was purchased from private owner (newer used though) to replace the first one (generating unit completely melted). 3rd one was inherited and was used for parts to build an operating unit out of the 2nd generac (when I had plenty of time during the Hurricane Irene outage) - dying right now (leaks fuel and gives 170V)

Don't Buy It
This model ran for less than 10 hours before throwing a connecting rod. Don't buy it.

When Ike was heading our way my brother and I both bought the GP5000, paying $240 more than the off brand because Generac is supposed to be one of the better brands. At 169 hours his generator quit producing electricity and at 189 hours mine quit. Both were ran properly and not overloaded. Needless to say we will be taking them back for a refund because I just don't trust them anymore and don't want it even if fixed. I will buy a Honda or Briggs & Stratton in the off season when I can find some sales.
EGD RESPONDS: Both of these units will be covered by Generac's Factory Warranty. Give the folks at Generac a call at (888) 436-3722 (toll free) to find the Authorized Service near you.
Once you get the warranty repair done at no charge, it's up to you whether you keep them or sell them...

Thank Full
Well as everyone knows, Hurricane Ike screwed up Southeast Texas. Down trees in streets, on houses, and even in trees.
We lost power on Saturday morning 9/15/08 at 2:35a and got it back Tuesday 9/23/08 at 10:00a.
We decided on Monday 9/17/08 to stay with my wife's parents, right around the corner across the main road that comes through out subdivision. This way, we could go to work and have mom watch our daughter.
Yeah, work...and no lights, ain't it great. Well, come Thursday, I was able to call MY mother and found out they had got lights back. They also had bought a generator the Thursday before the storm.
The generator was the Generac GP5000. I went over to their place, pick it up, filled the gas cans, and brought it where we were staying.
My mother used it for 42.8 hours until they got lights. Me and my father inlaw ran a heavy-duty, 10-gauge 3-wire cord from the double 120v20a outlet to his main distribution box only on the 110 breakers.
We had every room with power for lights, T.V., fans, and also the refrigerator. We never got over a half load even with all of that.
I just wish we would purchased a window ac unit. We noticed when the refrigerator compressor kicked on and off, but it never pulled too hard on the generator.
There was 132.6 hours on it when we got lights back. So, you can see how long we ran it. We did change the oil when it reached 100 hours. And the oil was also changed at 10 hours as recommended.
I guess what I trying to say is that this generator, between 2 different users, never gave up or faultered while in use. It is a little load from the engine, but that doesn't matter when you can watch the Dallas Cowboys whoop the Green Bay Packers in Green Bay....lol. Great game though.
Thank you Generac for making an outstanding piece of machinery. Me and my wife plan to save up the money to order the Generac GP8000E from Electric Generators Direct before May of next year.

Hurricane Ike
Hurricane Ike hit the Texas Gulf Coast on 09/12/2008.
I went 7 days without electricity and this Generator kept us up and going with a cold refridgerator and lights!
I ran it 24 hours a day without a single hicup!
I highly recommend this generator to anyone who wants a reliable and affordable generator.
