Q: I have a 3500w generator that is not rated for 220v and only has a 3 prong 25 amp. outlet. I have a transfer switch that has a 4 prong plug- in. How can I hook this up?
by Tom from Virginia on September 01, 2011

A: If your generator has a 3-prong plug, it basically doesn't produce 220v electricity.

Regardless of the plugs, it won't be able to energize the 220v sections of your transfer switch.

It will, however, energize all of the 120v circuits in the transfer switch.

Most smaller generators simple don't have the strength to power high-voltage appliances and circuits.

Q: WHAT TYPE OF EXTENSION CORD FOR A SUMP PUMP ON A 20 AMP CIRCUIT CAN BE RUN TO A 6000
WATT GENERATOR THAT HAS STD 120V DUPLEX, L14-30R, AND L5-30R OUTLETS?

by MIKE from West Virginia on May 22, 2011

A: The following cord would be appropriate to connect to the L14-30 outlet on the generator.
