  1 Question
Q: I recently split up with my business partner and ended up with a 2007 Colman Powermate 5000 watt generator. NO fuel or oil was ever added. It was just stored. Are there any special instruction for starting it for the first time, besides adding fuel & oil.

by Dave from Colorado on May 07, 2011

A: Dave,
Sorry for the late response, but the simple answer to your question is to simply add the gas and oil and pull the start cord. It should start right up if it was stored in a dry location and never had fuel in it.

Let us know if you have more questions on your new inheritance......

Thank you,

One Shot Of Starting Fluid And Your Good To Go...
Like David said pop off the air cleaner cover give it a quick shot of starting fluid and I guarantee you it will start half way through that first pull. I also recommend you shut of the fuel supply and run it dry before storing it. I've had this unit for 6 years and it has got me through MANY power outages. I have NEVER had an issue when following these procedures. I LOVE THIS UNIT!

Re: Difficulty Starting
You did remember to open the shutoff on the fuel valve, right? The fuel valve is located on the underside of the gas tank and the shutoff must be turned counterclockwise several turns to open. The only time that I have ever had difficulty starting my unit is when I forgot to open the shutoff!

It Works Fine For Me.
I purchased this unit used. The previous owner used the unit a construction site for three months straight.

I have had to use it twice- once during a power outage and once while camping. I have read many posts regarding problems with this unit, but I have not experienced any of them.

I keep the fuel tank full with gas and Sea Foam to keep the fuel system clean. I start the unit at least twice a year BEFORE I actually need it.

As an inexpensive unit it serves its purpose.

Coleman Non-starter
I had the exact same experience with the coleman 5000w - the engine would not start when new.

I checked fuel flow from the hose to the carb. I pulled apart the carb, cleaned it out, put in new, clean gas, checked the spark plug (it seemed like a weak spark but it had one).

I poured a little gas into plug hole, replaced the plug and it started instantly for 3 seconds until the gas was gone. This indicates that the gas is not getting past the carb.

Coleman Powermate 5000 Watt Portable Generator W/ Cord Review
I agree with Mike Davidson. I always have to take the air cleaner cover and filter off and shoot it with a shot of ether (starting fluid) before it will start. In the middle of the night, in a storm, this is a problem.

Other than that, it is a great machine.

Coleman Powermate 5000 Watt Portable Generator W/ Cord Review
When my son sent us a PowerMate PM0435000
generator a few days ago we were very happy to get it prior to the June Hurricane season coming to Florida! After reading all the "Glowing Reports" about this particular model, we were even more so! However, after reading the manuals throughly and preping the generator per instructions I was ready to syart the "4-hour run in", but the bloody thing refused to obey its "easy-pull start" hype. Im no spring chicken, but not... more

Coleman Powermate 5000 Watt Portable Generator W/ Cord Review
FACTORY CLOSE-OUT! Coleman Powermate is liquidating these generators to make room for their 2008 model.

EGD also offers another Coleman close-out at $599.99. If you're shopping soley on price, get that one.

If you want value, you should seriously consider this model. Why?

First, it comes with a 20-Amp Gen-Cord. The cord alone is worth the extra $100.00.

Secondly, it has pneumatic -- instead of plastic tires.

Third, it features a Briggs & Stratton -- instead of Tecumseh... more
