Jim's Recommendation
By itself, the Briggs & Stratton 40303 standby generator isn’t all that unique.
When you package it with Briggs & Stratton’s smart circuit automatic transfer switch, now you've got something.
Most 15 kilowatt generators can power one 4-ton air conditioner. This Briggs & Stratton 40303 standby system can actually power TWO 4-ton air conditioners.
How?
With its patented central air technology, the system automatically senses when extra electricity is available. If the power exists, it will automatically start the second air conditioner. If it doesn’t, it won’t start, protecting the generator from overloading.
The Briggs & Stratton 40303PACK is ideal for hurricane-prone areas, where the southern summer sun can literally turn cool homes into sweltering saunas in a matter of hours.
Note: If one of your central air conditioner is a 5-ton model, you’ll need to get a more powerful system.

Very Poor Warranty Support
After the transfer switch was installed (correctly) it began to smolder and throw out smoke. The installer phoned Briggs and Stratton who stated that it was a faulty coil and gave him the name of two local dealers.
One never bothered to return any calls, the other returned one call and disappeared off the face of the earth. B&S put me in touch with yet another dealer. He didn't have any of the switches in stock, but said more were coming and he'd get back to me. 1 1/2 weeks later and nothing.
So we're close to 3 weeks from discovery of the faulty ATS and no closer to it being resolved. Not acceptable for a brand new product, and nobody seems to particularly care. Perhaps a better resolution would have been to send out a replacement switch immediately and issue an RMA for the faulty one?
Overall given the apparent lack of quality control, and couldn't care less attitude to resolving faulty product issues (beyond making the customer run around calling various dealers), I couldn't recommend this or any other B&S product.
EGD RESPONDS: We checked our files and didn't see where you had purchased the unit from us, so we are limited in how much help we can provide.
You may want to give the folks at Briggs & Stratton a call at (800) 743-4115 to see if they can intercede on your behalf with the local Service Center. Sometimes a nudge from higher up helps get the job done.

Generators made easy
I recently made the decision to spend the dough and buy a whole house standby generator for those pesky summer outages. Not being completely familiar with the products available I checked into some at the big-box stores.
Information was scant and prices were quite high.
I then searched the Internet, looked at Generators Direct and all their selection. Prices were very good. But the best outcome outcome was the phone call to them to inquire about my choice of units and my power needs.
Your representative was informative, polite, and even asked questions of me which verified whether or not I had made the right assumptions on the system package.
Additionally, the freight carrier, R & L, was equally communicative, and the driver was polite and helpful as well.
In all, a very good experience.
