Awesome Equipment
I bought on of these 11 days ago and ran it almost non-stop until yesterday 2-05-09.
I stopped it every 48 hours to change the oil and it ALWAYS started on the first pull. It's a great piece of equipment and it saved two families and their food through the recent ice storm in Western Kentucky.
I recommend it to everyone and would buy it again without hesitation.

New Hampshire Ice
During this last ice event we were without power (and water from the well) for 6 days before I installed this unit.
It saved our pipes (and our butts) from freezing. It started right up on the first pull, and ran for 14 hours on 6 gallons of gas.
My only minor complaints: it has 13mm nuts and bolts to attach the handle and foot, I needed to borrow a neighbors metric socket wrench. And, the oil plug is positioned so that it is impossible to drain the oil without it first hitting the frame.

Hurricane Ike
I powered a small window unit 5500 btu's, 2 fans, a 20 inch crt TV, the fridge, and other small lights...
I had filled up 4x5 gallons of gas before hurricane and was just using the last jug when power came back.
Using the window unit, I guess ups the gas consumption but other than that no complaints...
When you are sweating after a hurricane and no cold drinks, you would pay 5k for one of these.

WOW! This unit is amazing!
I have owned portable generators in the past, but this Briggs and Stratton Extended Run 5500 run-8500surge is by far the best unit I have ever owned or used. I have this unit on my race car trailer to power all my flood lights, air compressor, winch, power tools, battery charger, etc.
The real test came last weekend when a fellow racer next to me had his generator break down, and he asked to plug into mine. I was a little hesitant at first, but I wanted to see what this unit could do.
We plugged power strips into all four 125v sockets in order to connect all the plugs we had, and this unit never moaned, groaned or hesitated powering up BOTH race trailers and all the equipment! We even burned up one surge protector power strip and it never even blew this unit's circuit breakers! Wow... now that is power! Needless to say, I told my buddy where I got this unit, and what a great deal this was. He will probaby be your next customer...
Now I am back for the 120-240v plug, and protection cover I forgot to order when I bought this unit a couple months ago. I live in a small mining community in southeast New Mexico, and I would have NEVER been able to find anything comparable within several hundred miles from here, let alone delivered to my door at a fantastic price and free delivery.
This site makes it so easy to research, shop and buy. I will be back again and again. Thanks guys, keep up the great work and fantastic deals. Jim B. Briggs & Stratton 30241 - 5550 Watt Extended Run Portable Generator Review
I got this generator right on time. It started great, and kept my basement from flooding during the recent power outage and heavy rains. I am very happy with this machine.

Briggs & Stratton 30241 - 5550 Watt Extended Run Portable Generator Review
We bought this one while enduring Hurricane Ivan's aftermath, and pensacola, Florida's power outage for 10 days in swealtering humidity. This generator powered the refrigerator, a window air conditioner, 3 fans, two lamps, and a T.V. and an alarm clock all at once for 11 hours on one tank of fuel.

Briggs & Stratton 30241 - 5550 Watt Extended Run Portable Generator Review
Used this Generator in January 2007 for 4 straight days/nights after electricity was lost due to ice storm, never turned it off except to fill with gas. Powered gas furnace, refrigerator, two TV's all the lights I wanted and even used one of the 220v burners on the cook top, all at the same time! This was a Troy-Built model. After purchase and a very quick set up (wheels and handle) added gas and started right up (and every time after that). Read owners manual, says to change oil after 5 hrs first use, I did and again after 48 hrs. Has a very easy drain and takes little over a quart to fill (about a 5 minute process). Ran for more than 10 hrs on 5 gallons gas. Briggs & Stratton 30241 - 5550 Watt Extended Run Portable Generator Review
The 5550 work great!!! It had enough power to run all the lights and my well. A friend bought a 5000 watt generator with a low start up watts and it would not run his well. I brought my 5550 over and it turned it right over with out any problems. The high starting watts is the only way to go. I could not believe how good it was on fuel too!

Briggs & Stratton 30241 - 5550 Watt Extended Run Portable Generator Review
This handy little generator saved the day early in Dec. '06 when a nice little ice storm hit the Greater St. Louis Metropolitan area!
With a little incentive to get heat going in 10 degree weather, this small but powerfull generator kept my family warm for just over a week by powering our home and keeping essentials running!
Don't let the ratings of 13 hours @ 50% fool you... Mine ran for 17 hours between fillups. I can't say that it wasn't being taxed beyond 50% much, but you could hear it pull down a bit when the refrigerators would fire up! (Yes, two!)
It's a keeper!

Briggs & Stratton 30241 - 5550 Watt Extended Run Portable Generator Review
July of 2006 we were hit with major hurricane strength storm in St. Louis. Knocked our power out for 9 days. Our friends bought this generator and the same day their power was restored, so they did not need it and offered it to us to use. I put it together with great ease, filled it with oil & gas, gave it 1 pull and she fired up beautifully. I ran it solidly for 7 of those 9 days. Now once again we were hit with a major Ice storm. I have run it for 4 days so far and still perfect. The 7 gallon tank lasts a long time. I am running my gas furnace, refrigereator, TV & computer with a few lights. alternate furnace with washer & dryer. NO speed bumps here. I love this thing. Briggs & Stratton 30241 - 5550 Watt Extended Run Portable Generator Review
This is a great product for the price. I got it with a 6 circuit transfer box and wired my critical home circuits to it. After unpacking and filling it with oil and gas, it started on the first pull.
Be aware that it is a heavy unit at over 160 lbs. This isn't a problem for me as mine sits on a pad.

Briggs & Stratton 30241 - 5550 Watt Extended Run Portable Generator Review
have had this 5500 watt generator for a year and ran in at two family functions more than 15 hours in 85 degree temps, also 4 camping trips with no failure.
the key is to use full synthetic motor oil and you are fine, could not have found a better product.

Briggs & Stratton 30241 - 5550 Watt Extended Run Portable Generator Review
We just received this unit and have not actually run it yet, but I wanted to actually do a review of the purchase and customer service process. It was excellent. The site gave me all the info I needed, the ordering process was smooth, I received confirmation of the order, I was updated of the progress, sent the Pro number to trace the factory direct shipment, etc. I even sent an email on a Sunday asking for an update. I expected an answer Monday, but actually received the answer on that same day. The unit arrived as scheduled and in excellent condition. There was some minor final assembly of the wheels and handle which was pretty easy. Now that I have the generator, I'm all set since I wouldn't lose my electricity unless I didn't have one. :-) We just received this unit and have not actually run it yet, but I wanted to actually do a review of the purchase and customer service process. Briggs & Stratton 30241 - 5550 Watt Extended Run Portable Generator Review
I ordered on April 29 and received on May 9. It was delivered right into my garage which was better than buying locally and doing it myself. I have run it for about 5 hours, changed oil and tested some appliances with no problems. So far I’m very happy with my purchase.
