No Power During The Recent Superstorm Sandy
After going thru the storm with no power for 3 days, we said "that's not going to happen again" . So, I looked for a generator and a manual switch, found both online and ordered them. Naturally they were both back ordered after the storm.
After receiving both my electrician wired it all together for me. All works great, the switch is very easy to use. However, I would have ordered the next size bigger with at least 10 circuits had I figured out the extra power of my generator and what I wanted to run.
Other than that, the generator and switch are both a excellent investment.
EGD RESPONDS: Our Buyer's Guides will help you match your needs with the proper generator and transfer switch. Just click on the Buyer's Guides link at the bottom of our web page.

Finally Hooked Up
After Hurricane Sandy, we decided not to be caught off guard again. I looked online and found the Briggs 30207, 10,000 watt generator to be a good deal for the money compared to the others. And yes- there are many.
I ordered it and a few weeks later it arrived. The wheel kit and foot rests had to be put on the frame. The wheel kit was a breeze as were the foot rests. The oil level was almost full , so after topping it off and adding a little gas it started right up, no problem.
I went to move it out of the garage and the rubber foot rest snagged on the door threshold causing them both to fall apart. They are only pressed on with a washer. Poor design . So I removed both foot rests, pulled the press fitting out and replaced both with a bolt and nut which the factory should have done in the first place. Other than a few extra minutes with the bolts and nuts the generator was perfect.
Now that I have it in an enclosure and hooked to a manual switch, it has performed perfectly. I bought a 10 circuit, 50-amp manual switch, the electrician hooked it all up and the test run was perfect. There was plenty of power from the generator and all worked fine.
2 of the circuits run a 220v hot water heater so I only have 8 circuits to use. I would have gotten a bigger switch with the extra power from the generator had I known. In all, the generator is awesome.

Purchased the Briggs & Stratton 30207 following superstorm Sandy and have two comments to make. The unit comes with 30 weight oil which in my experience is fine for warm weather operation but not the best for sub freezing winter temperatures.
I believe a multi-grade would be preferable. The second comment concerns maintenance for oil changes. As delivered, the unit does not allow for a neat oil removal process. The crankcase has a plug which when removed allows the oil to drain onto the bottom frame and the rubber support mounts for the engine.
You need to be well prepared for the resulting mess and position cardboard, newspaper, and paper towels for the resulting mess. It would have been nice if Briggs had built the unit with a semi flexible drain line to outboard of the frame as Generac managed to supply. You may want to visit your local hardware store and purchase corrective parts to remedy this situation.

First of all I would like to thank EGD for their customer service. I had the generator in 3 days .... had minor issues after assembly and was taken care of right away. Thanks Chris.
After wiring the house with 6/3 with a ground .... I started up the generator and ran the house for 6 hours just to make sure the generator ... and my wiring was fine. Wanted to find out now ... rather than later ... that I might have had an issue and everything was flawless.
Generator ran great and was quieter than I thought looking at the numbers. Handled a 5500 watt 60 gallon hot water heater and all my 120 AC breakers in a 200 amp breaker box. I heat the house with wood, so I do not need the furnace fan motor breaker on. The only thing I wish B&S would address is the unit sitting level. It has 2 point of contact to the floor ... tires and the front supports. Either the tires need to be taller ... or the front supports with rubber bumpers need to be shorter. I tried 10.5" flat-free tires (which were 1" taller) and it was not quite tall enough.
So I made shorter supports for the front. Had them powder coated and reused the rubber bumpers and all is good. Now the unit sits level. I would recommend this unit to anyone looking for the size and price vs a Honda

Waiting For Next Outage
Jim was very helpful to me in making this selection. Unit arrived quickly but I had to meet driver a mile away from my home (no way a semi was going to make it to my driveway). Hauled unit home with ATV and trailer. Wheel kit and legs easily installed. Unit already had most of the oil in it so only had to add small amount. Engine started right up.
Two initial problems with unit that prevent me from giving a 5-star rating:
1) There were no nuts installed on the alternator shock mounts so it actually pulled loose from frame when I set unit on its end (per instructions) to install wheels. Fortunately, I had the proper metric nuts on hand to fix this flaw. Dumb factory error and doesn't give me much of a warm "quality control" feeling.
2) With support legs installed, the unit was WAY out of level. After calling B&S about this, they opined that the wrong legs were shipped with unit they shipped out replacements. Unfortunately, new legs also too high. Support legs have very thick rubber pads installed on them. I fixed by drilling out mounting rivets, cutting down pads by 1/2 inch, and re-installing with small nuts & bolts.. Unit now sits level but this is a silly design error.
I have tested the unit by powering my garage for about an hour (both 30 and 50 amp outlets tested) and everything seems to work great. Waiting for first power outage to see how this baby performs under full load.

Check The Oil Level
I haven't had to rely on the unit yet, but it ran smoothly on the first pull. Important thing to remember though, as another reviewer said a few months ago: Manual says to add both supplied bottles of oil (26oz. and 18oz.) to the engine which is supposed to be shipped without any oil. Well I could not even add the whole 26oz. bottle and the dipstick read full.
The engine is supposed to have a 48oz capacity. So I figured I'd run it a few minutes and it would occupy the filter, nooks and crannies and such, nope, still full. So I guess they don't ship them dry like the manual says. Wish they wouldn't say in plain english add BOTH bottles in the quick start guide. Not a fun way to start playing with your new toy. But, it seems like a real solid unit, checked the voltage outputs for all receptacles with a good volt meter and all are spot on, so 5 stars otherwise.

So Happy I Bought This One From This Vender
I bought this in September 2012
We went through hurricane Sandy and performed great.
I didn't have my 50 amp circuit installed yet so I used the 20 amp and back fed a 20 amp circuit with the main off line. Ran fridge, freezer, oil burner, and several lights. We had heat, warm food, hot water, and some lights.
I'm installing the 50 amp circuit , a propane conversion kit and a 3/4" propane feed from my 500 gallon propane tank.
We will be better prepared for the next one. It should be able to run A/C also.
We won't have to deal with no gasoline.

Perfect Generator Upgrade
After two major outages in 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012, our old 5KW generator just wasn't shouldering the load. Sure, it handled some household loads like the well pump and refrigerator, as long as we're careful about not turning on certain other loads.
We live in a wooded area set way back from the nearest road, so our outages tend to be longer than most- after the 2011 hurricane we were without power for 8 days, then the October 2011 snowstorm, another 4 1/2 days, and Hurricane Sandy in 2012 we were 6 days without power.
This 10KW generator is the perfect solution. The unit was simple to assemble (install wheels and add oil), and started immediately, as soon as the wheels were installed. The only upgrade we made was to substitute flat-free tires for the ones that came with the unit.
We like the electric start, for ease of use. The 18 HP V-Twin engine provides all the power we need, and more. It is simple, rugged, reliable, and well-built.

Excellent
I just got the generator about two weeks ago and have not have the opportunity to try it out in a storm. It was an easy set up and it started on the first crank.
I would suggest having a friend over when it arrives or have a dolly at the ready. It weighs 283 pounds and comes in a box with no handles.
I had an electrician set up another panel and outdoor plug. This avoids having to run extension cords.
I will eventually house it outside under some sort of structure that can be removed for ventilation. I will put it on a concrete pad with an eyelet that will be used to chain it down.

Check The Oil Level!
I put this together following the directions which say to use both bottles of oil supplied. I added Stabil to my gas and fired her up. It took a few minutes to run without smoke pouring out. I ran it for 15 minutes, waited until it cooled down and checked oil level. It was way over the crosshatched marking so I emptied about 16 ounces via drain plug.
The moral is this had some oil in it and didn't need both bottles shipped with unit. I hardwired a PB50 inlet box to a 50 amp sub-panel in my detached garage and will backfeed my house after manually shutting the main power.
Sandy was a wake-up call to those of us in the Northeast and this generator will keep the heat, fridge and lights on. Just watch the oil level!

It starts right up on the first try, every time, runs strong, and has plenty of power for the whole house. After 2 years and a few power outages ranging from 2 hours to 5 days, I wish it had a bigger gas tank and a bigger muffler.
You've got to like that it's well made, in the USA (well, mostly).

Powerful, Smart Generator
I live in an exclusively electrically powered house (2 heat pumps- 2.5 tons and 5 tons, water heater, cook top, oven) in Northern Virgina. This summer we got stranded without power for a week after the June 2012 Derecho storm. I had an 8-year-old smaller B&S (5.25kW) generator in the garage (bought after hurricane Isabelle for a different size house) that made the situation somewhat bearable. We had a fridge, some lights, a fan and TV (yes, cable lines were up even though power lines were down for a week).
We had no AC in 90 degrees, no hot water and no cooking (lots of BBQ though). We had to run power cords all over the house to power the basics - tripping hazards for kids and adults. After that experience I decided to upgrade my two electric panels with two transfer switches (30A Reliance Q310 and 50A Reliance Q510) and get a generator strong enough to power some more "essentials" like AC and hot water. Measuring power consumption of some of my bigger appliances (heat pumps, air handlers, water heater) and doing some math I decided I could manage in an emergency with 10kW with my 5.25KW as possible back-up.
After lots of research I decided on the B&S 30207. It is strong enough to start and run my small 2.5 ton heat pump and its air handler, plus the hot water heater, fridge, microwave and most lights and outlets in the house through my two transfer switches. (no cook top and oven though, and my larger heat pump- 5 tons- also wont be under the generator).
I decided against some of the "monster" Generac units (15 or 17kW) because they are just too big to store in my garage and very, very heavy. They are also fuel hogs compared to the B&S 30207, and in an extended emergency fuel efficiency does count for something... unless you can store a few barrels of gasoline.
Another big plus of the 30207 is the manual recoil starter in addition to the battery starter. The 30207 comes with its own float charger to keep the battery charged. But batteries die within 2 or 3 years and what good is a generator in an emergency with a dead battery and no manual start? (The Generacs don't have a manual recoil starter !)
Lastly, the outlet panel on the 30207 provides lots of options and flexibility to directly plug into both my transfer panels (even simultaneously with some careful power management).
1st hands-on experience: Wheel kit assembly was easy, although the wheels and axle did not quite fit through the generator's frame, the dimensions were slightly off and I had to leave the washers off behind the E-clips to make it work. The engine came with some oil in it and needed some topping off. After that, I hooked up the negative battery cable and added gasoline, pressed the start button and the engine started up after 2 cranks.
I hooked it up to my 2 transfer switches (via a 50A and a 30A power cord) and powered the house. I am very happy with the unit, it meets my requirements perfectly and does everything it promised. The unit is (relatively) compact and easily handled. It easily moves around on its wheel kit and it fits under my garage work bench for storage. It's even a bit quieter than my old 5.25kW unit.
One small note of caution: I first only put about 1/2 gallon of fuel into the tank and even though the engine easily started it then cut out several times. After trouble shooting I found that by putting a few gallons in the tank the behavior stopped. I figure with the generator's vibrations some wave patterns formed in the almost empty fuel tank leading to some air bubbles being sucked down the fuel line.
Overall, I am very happy with the purchase... the proof will of course be during the next extended power outage :-) The unit seems well built and certainly very well designed and thought through. PED was very easy to deal with and the ordering and delivery experience were very good. (The truck driver did get stuck in rush hour traffic and arrived several hours late... but you can't really control that, can you?)
I would recommend both PED and this particular generator (B&S 30207) to anybody who needs a compact yet powerful unit to run bigger appliances (e.g., 2-3 ton AC, water heater, etc.) and who doesn't want to go all the way to the "Monster" Generacs.

Happy Customer
The delivery person was rude and unhelpful. That was the only bad part. Assembly was easy and fast and I didn't have to wait long for a power outage.
When it came, my generator surpassed my expectations and powered my stove, oven, 2 fridges and lights- all at once. I was the envy of the neighborhood.
I am a happy customer.

Waited 4 Years For Isaac
I purchased this generator about 4 years ago for emergency use. I finally had to use it this week for Hurricane Isaac and it did the job flawlessly.
While others were without power, I was able to power the entire house, even the 2 - two ton ac's.

Generator Review
So far, so good. I haven't had to use the generator for a loss of power yet. Just received the generator about a week ago. Arrived in good condition for the most part. One of the tires needed air and seems to be holding fine. Took about an hour to set up which isn't bad. Started right up both electric and pull coil. Please check your oil upon receiving before starting. There was a little bit of oil in the generator, but needed about a quart which was provided with the shipment.

Ordered On Friday, Received On Wed Next Week
My $3500 Honda water cooled generator crapped out. Hardly used it. It was an ES6500, 13 years old. Decided to get a new generator and researched all types. Settled on the gas 30207 at 10KW. Got it on Wed and installed the wheels and supports. Fired it up with no problem and put a load on it. It worked fine.
The instructions said to add the 2 bottles of oil that came with it, but the generator already had oil in it. I checked the dip stick first. There was no need to add oil. Didn't like that because you could over fill it. Now I have to wait for a power outage. I have a manual transfer switch for the whole house so I didn't have add one.
I plan to keep it in the garage and not leave it in the generator box because the weather caused my old Honda generator to get rather cruddy. I'll roll it out and put in the box if a large storm is coming. Service was excellent and deliver was on a lift gate box truck. He rolled it right into the garage.

Not A Good Story
Have owned this generator for 3 months and all but 5 days it has been in the shop. Unit was delivered by an angry driver because he couldn't find our place. The unit had minor cosmetic damage. Engine starts easy and runs well, but the voltage regulator only seems to last about 1.5 hours @ 9 amps load of 240 vac.
Briggs customer service is practically non-existant. Instead of replacing the whole machine or at least the generator end, they keep changing pieces, ie: stator, carrier bearing and housing, voltage regulators etc. After 5 voltage regulators, once again waiting on corporate tech support. Bottom line is after choosing this machine based on reviews and the Briggs and Straton reputation, should have bought the Generac.

An Excellent Upgrade!
We have had a 5Kw portable for many years. It has reliably powered corded tools, work lights and most recently a pump on a deep well. Startup on that 1Hp pump was about the limit of its capacity. So when we began talking seriously about purchasing a new generator with greater capacity, the research project began. After much study and discussion we settled on the 10Kw Briggs model 30207 to use as our home emergency power and when needed, to give the old 5Kw a break.
Here at EGD the selection process was made simple and ordering straightforward. From the beginning of my search through the delivery yesterday, EGD kept every promise as well as communicating regularly regarding the status of our order. When it is time to order another product they offer, I will be back.
Today was the shakedown cruise for the 30207 and it performed flawlessly. Every item and feature on the machine worked and all ancillary parts were present in the box. I first tried a few power tools in the 120v outlets and the engine didn't even seem to notice. Then I took it out to the pump house and connected the well pump. At first I thought the 220 outlet must not be working because I couldn't hear any change in the engine rpm when the pump should have kicked in. Then to my amazement the tank pressure gauge started to rise! Long story short, this thing exceeds my every expectation and seems to be very well built. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for home emergency power who can do without the extra Kw capacity needed for air conditioning.
Relatively minor but there are some negative comments:
1. This model may well be "made in the USA" as advertised but there are quite a few parts and sub assemblies stamped "Made in China".
2. When unboxed, the tires were nearly flat. Nothing a little "Slime" and a handpump couldn't fix but QC should catch such things.
3. The instructions mentioned lock washers that should have been present on the bolts used to mount the legs. Not there. Fortunately, I had nylon insert nuts to substitute for the missing washers. Again, a small QC item.
4. Try as I might, I could not find a tag with the engine's "code number" mentioned in the Operator's Manual.
To sum up, I'm most pleased with this purchase and the service provided by EGD. I highly recommend this company and especially this particular model generator.

10,000 Watt Generator Purchase
I had to take this into the repair shop the first week. It kept poping breakers under a load and runs with a constant "surge" which sends varying voltage to the equipment. Would not recommend. Stay with Honda.

Wonderful Combination
I got this generator to augment a 5,000 watt generator. The model 30207 generator is very well built, much better than I expected it to be.
The electric start is a great addition. I wired it to the Q510A transfer switch by way of the PB50 power inlet box. This combination is wonderful and with some wiring knowledge does not really require an expert electrician to preform.

Briggs & Stratton 30207
I received my generator on time, and with all it's advertised accessories. This was also in spite of a cold spell here in the Northwest which was greatly hampering all deliveries by road. I ordered it delivered with a lift gate truck, and R&L Carriers unloaded it right at my garage door.
The generator was in perfect condition upon arrival, and after some minor assembly work, ( installing the wheels and adding the supplied oil), it started immediately, and ran very well for 15 minutes, at which time I shut it down and proceeded to have my electrician friend, wire it in with 50 amp service to the main service panel. It was then tested, and it powered everything in the house without the electric base board heat.
This generator is an excellent choice for the money, and would easily and completely power, most energy efficient homes which have gas hot water, and gas heat. The high speed idle feature is great for reducing noise and fuel consumption at times when there is little to no draw of power.
This model is even quieter than I expected it to be, with its 18 h.p. engine. It's certainly a lot quieter than the older 11h.p. Generac I had been running. No complaints or disappointments whatsoever, I give 5 stars to Electric generators direct for a well packaged machine, competitively priced, and 5 stars to R&L Carriers, who delivered it on time, and in excellent condition, in spite of the weather delays to my garage.
The convenience of not having to arrange or pay for pickup- delivery also made the experience a lot easier.

I'm happy with the generator over all but some issues with quality control. One 120 outlet does not work. One motor mount rubber is split three quarter of the way down. The axle was short for the space of tabs that axle goes through. I had to bend them inward with a hammer to make axle work. I have to return generator for warranty work.
I have to say performance of generator is excellent. I still think I made right choice in generators for the money.

Looking Forward To Putting It Through Its Paces
My generator was received exactly as promised with no hitches. The truck driver was very friendly and accommodating. The assembly was easy, and once I added the oil and gasoline, the electric starter fired it up in seconds.
I have only tried it on a very small space heater to verify it was putting out electricity, but I am looking forward to putting it through its paces and I fully expect it to perform without any problems.
The second time I cranked it, it ran for a few seconds then shut down and I couldn't re-crank it -- it really helps to remember to cut the gas valve back on.
I won't hesitate to recommend your company to anyone looking for auxiliary electrical power.

Good Shape
Good price. Generator arrived quickly, in good shape. The delivery person was nice and helpful.
Haven't had the chance to use it fully. Our power has not gone out since we got it.
I'm sure it will work great.

I live at 9,000 feet in Colorado, and several times, mostly in the early spring, we have our heaviest snows and I have been without electricity for several days.
Not a pleasant experience when you do not have an alternative heat source other than a furnace. So I decided enough of that.
The generator was delivered to the trucking company within a few days of the order. The trucker was kind enough to make arrangements to deliver to a place other than my home, since the roads are not semi-truck friendly.
My generator started up the first time, no problems, and ran all the needed appliances: well pump, furnace, and computer without a noticeable drag at all.
I am very happy!!! The service people both at your company and the trucking company were very friendly and helpful.
Thanks again.

Awesome Deal
I purchased this generator after a very bad storm in the New York Metropolitan area and have not used it yet but I will tell you that the delivery and customer service from Generators Direct is a class by itself.
And, after a prompt and FREE delivery (with a power lift on the tractor trailer) I inspected everything in package which included oil and several electrical connectors along with inflatable wheels and hardware and it was all A-OK!
I assembled the wheels on the generator, added oil and fuel and this baby fired right up. It ran great and I tested the outlets with several different tools I have to ensure it was all OK, and it was.
I also purchased a 50 amp power transfer box, the supply cord and the interlock kit for my breaker panel and my electrician will install these items so in the event of an outage I can power my entire house with this unit.
Between the price for the gen.,the cost of extra items and approximately $250 dollars for the electrician's labor (approx $2,750 total ) I have a complete setup ready to go..no extension cords running thru windows,etc..
This is a small price to pay for a huge convenience in a home...especially when I have 2 sump pumps that need to keep water out of my basement.
I recommend this setup for anyone looking for a permanent solution for power outages.
GREAT JOB to ELECTRIC GENERATORS!!!! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

Customer Service Was Friendly
This is actually my second generator from Electric Generators Direct.com.
The first generator was delivered damaged with a couple of the circuit switches broken off and a dent around the electrical board. This probably happened in shipping.
They picked up the broken one and replaced it with a new one and it is doing the job I purchased it for.
The customer service was friendly.

Disappointed
EGD Responds: B & S, like most manufactures will not cover transportation costs for warranty service on portable generators. Many dealers do offer pick/drop-off service for a fee if you are unable to bring in the generator yourself. You would have to contact a dealers directly to see if that service is available and the cost.
Initially I was very pleased with the 30207 Briggs and Stratton generator. Assembled and test ran unit. Operated just fine. 2 days later I started generator and attempted to use it. Engine started and ran at idle speed but would not increase speed when load was applied. . I contacted my local Briggs and Stratton dealer and was told that they do not work on electric part of units. The next closest service center is 60 miles away and I do not feel that a person should have to load and haul a heavy unit that far to be checked out. Have not been able to contact Briggs and Stratton directly. I will keep trying to contact Briggs and Stratton. I had an electrician check the unit and he said the stepper motor or control for stepper motor was defective.

I Will Be Prepared
On December 18, 2009 a major snow storm hit this region. It was very wet, heavy snow after an unusually wet Fall.
Power and utility companies were not prepared for the devastation this snow caused. Power poles were broken by falling trees, roads blocked and made impassable by trees and snow.
We were without power, public service water, phone or any other utilities for 12 days. I had a 6000 watt generator that barely operated a few appliances if used separately. I had a deep well that I had kept operational and plumbed into my home.
By turning off the PSA water system and turning on the well we had water. The generator I had would operate the well pump. It would operate the water heater if all other loads were removed. I disconnected the main breaker from the power company line. I had a power cable that could feed power from my workshop to my house. By being selective with the load applied the 6000 watt generator kept us with necessities.
I have a propane heater for emergency heat but felt that I needed a larger generator. After searching the internet I selected the Briggs and Stratton 30207 from Electric Generators Direct.com.
I am very impressed with the service and delivery of my generator. The only complaint I have is that a large plug for the main power receptacle was not included with the generator. All other plugs were shipped with the unit.
I would also like to compliment the freight company for working with me to deliver the generator to my workplace. I contacted the freight company dispatcher on the day of delivery and explained that it would be more convenient to drop the generator where I work instead of my home. My workplace is on the route they were using.
Very helpful driver and dispatcher.
Hope I never need the generator for this type emergency again, but I will be prepared if needed.

Competitors Are Not Even Close
Let the BOSS know, my hat is off to your business! First Class Act!
I placed my order two days ago mid-day and received my generator set mid- day today.
I have been trying to order this set since our power was out for seven days, just before the holidays.
Your competitors are not even close to your level of service.
Thank You Very Much!

Working Great For 3 Years And Counting
I bought this generator after Hurricane Rita blew through and it came to my door in two days.
The wiring diagram was very easy to follow. It runs great.
I've only had one problem: the gasket on the oil sending unit on the motor was not properly installed at the factory. The first time I ran it for about 1 hour and it shut down, just like it was supposed to do! I traced the source and replaced the gasket, filled up the oil again, hit the starter and it started right up.
It has never failed to work great in the 3 years that I have had it.

Generator was received at a local freight distributor, for pickup, in only three days after online purchase.
Easy to follow setup instructions. Minimal assembly right out of box. Easy to roll after assembly. Battery had a good charge.
Added gas and oil, and the engine fired right up. Connected to home via 50 amp sub-panel after the wind from Ike knocked my power out a couple of weekends ago.
Seemed to work lights and refrigerator just fine. As soon as I got it up and running, service power was restored.
Did not get to use the generator for an extended period, thankfully.
Have not had much of a load on this generator, but I feel like it would do just fine.
Quiet running machine, as well. Will need to purchace your own cord to connect to a home.
Thanks goes out to EGD. I would recommend this product.
God bless those that received much more damage from Ike, than I did.

This is an excellent generator. It is solidly built and assembled. When I received the unit, it came with an extra oil filter, extra spark plug, and extra air filter. All I had to do was add oil (supplied) and gas (not supplied) and it was ready to go. One press of the starter switch and it fired right up. I ran my entire house and 5 out buildings for an hour and a half test run and it worked like a charm. The fold down arms make moving this hefty unit a snap. My 120 lb wife moved it around with ease.
If you have been looking for a generator, look no more. This is a great value and a great performer.
