I bought the prior model of the Generac 15KW generator after hurricane Ike hit Houston. EGD said the price included home delivery, but because of the condition of Houston they couldn't guarantee when. They could guarantee it would be at the truck terminal in Houston in two days. I drove the 60 miles to the terminal with my utility trailer and waited for the truck to be unloaded. They put it on the trailer with a fork lift and I went home.
When I got it home it took about an hour to get it out of the crate and up and running. The power company had told us we would be out for two weeks. The power came back on as I was going to get the generator. I went ahead and bought a transfer switch and all of the major components needed to connect it to my house properly. All of that stuff sat in a closet until two weeks ago (9-5-11). I start the generator once a month and let it run with a light load for about 15 minutes.
Two weeks ago our power went out twice for several hours. We used extension cords and a portable AC unit to stay cool in this record Texas heat. That's when I decided to get serious about connecting the generator to my house. The house is 3,500 sqft with three AC units. I installed a sub-panel from Home Depot and a transfer switch and power inlet box from EGD. I did the work myself. I haven't added it all up, but it must be pushing $1,000 in parts and supplies. Everything is now hooked up and working as it should. It takes me about 10 minutes to get the generator out of the garage and hooked to the house.
Regarding the AC units, we recently had one of the original Carrier units replaced with a Trane. The Trane came with a "Quick Start" unit on it. My AC guy came out and put one on both of the remaining Carrier units for $325. I understand that these units will also extend the life of the AC compressors under normal use. The generator will now run all three units at the same time, provided they don't all start at the same time. I don't intend to run all three units with the generator, but it will do it.
I also added the Yamaha hour/tach meter. I mounted the unit to the front of the control panel. The sensor wire that came with it is a little short for this generator, but any wire AWG 22 or larger and up to 8 ft will work. I ran the wire through RC airplane fuel line to give it some protection. The fuel line is also heat resistant.
I am very happy with the generator and the service from EDG. They didn't have the 17.5KW when I bought this one, or I would have gotten it.
